Lagos urges compliance with procurement procedures (Nation)

The Lagos State government has urged all Directors/Heads of Finance and Accounts Departments in all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the state to sustain the impressive procurement and payment processes which ensured transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. The state Accountant General, Abimbola Umar, who spoke during the second quarterly technical meeting organised by the State Treasury Office (STO) for Directors/Head of Finance in Lagos, said the success story of Lagos, especially in the area of effective management of resources, has put the state in an enviable position. She urged them to always strive for excellence through prudent management of scarce resources. Read more

PDP vows to win Elections in Lagos (Independent)

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reminded members of the party in Ojo local government area (LGA) that the party is prepared to win all the seats in the area and will shun all forms of impunity by adhering strictly to party’s constitution. The chair of the party in Lagos State, Hon Moshood Adegoke Salvador, Ojo House of Representatives member, Hon Tajudeen Obasa, the Ojo LGA chairman, Alh. Adio Salami and the Lagos State woman leader, Yeye Shola Benson told the crowd that gathered to receive Hon Salvador who was on a tour of the area that the party was ready for serious business and as such all the members must be serious and ensure that they get involved in the party’s activities at their wards. Lagos urges residents to take advantage of free check-up (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to take advantage of its ‘Eko Free Health Mission’ to get free medical screening. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said the programme was in furtherance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration’s quest to ensure health coverage for all residents. He urged citizens to visit designated centres around the state for free medical screening. A statement on Thursday quoted Idris as saying this while giving a progress report of the programme. According to him, no fewer than 44,000 residents in 19 local government and local council development areas in the state had already benefited from the ‘Eko Free Health Mission’. Read more

Ex-lawmaker gets excellence award (Nation)

A former lawmaker of Lagos State House of Assembly and an aspirant for the House of Representatives in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mrs Risikat Ajoke Adegeye, has won the Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (Y.Y.S.A) Award of Excellence. The award ceremony was held at the local government secretariat in Festac Town, Lagos. Olalekan Hammed, who presented the award to Mrs Adegeye, said: “The House of Representatives aspirant is being awarded for her relentless contributions towards youth development, preservation and projection of Yoruba culture and nation-building.” The association’s Secretary of the Advisory Council, Tijani Saheed Oluwadare, noted that the awardee deserved the award for her immense contributions to youth empowerment in the local government area. Stakeholders laud new furniture factory in Lagos (Guardian)

The Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and Senator Oluremi Tinubu have commended the establishment of a new ultra-modern furniture factory “Home and You Limited” in Ikorodu, saying it would create employment and increase the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Ambode, who was represented by the Lagos state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye at the commissioning ceremony, said establishing a furniture factory in the state is a welcome development, as it would provide employment for those in the furniture and allied business.He adding that development of industries shows government’s positive indication of the appropriateness of its policy in providing an enabling environment for the establishment of new investments and for existing one to continue to strive. LASU VC, Lagos, Ondo AGs, 28 others elevated to rank of Senior Advocate (ThisDay)

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Olarenwaju Adigun Fagbohun; the Attorney General of Lagos State, Mosediq Adeniji Kazeem, his Ondo State counterpart, Adekola Adeyeye Olawoye and 28 others were yesterday named as Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC). Others are Prof. Mohammed Mustapha Akanbi of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Isah Hayatu Chiroma, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, Prof. Oforinze Dike Amucheazi and Prof. Oluyemisi Adefunke Bamgbose, the only female among them. Also on the list announced by Secretary of the committee and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hadizatu Mustapha are Oba Maduabuchi, Essien Essien Udom, Metong Robert Urombo, George Chiedu Igbokwe and Olubowale Taiwo. Accolades, cultural carnival as Ogunlana presents two new books (Punch)

Elder statesman and Chairman of SCIB Insurance Brokers, Olola Olabode Ogunlana, earned accolades in Lagos on Thursday as he presented two news literary books.  The businessman, author, fine artist and culture promoter is 86, but he proved that creativity and old age are not enemies as the two books – Out of the Black Pot and Selected Tales, both collections of short stories – were rated highly by the experts who gathered at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, venue of the event. With a former Chairman of Punch Nigeria Limited, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, as the chairman, the programme attracted several traditional rulers that included the Oba of Lagos, HRH Rilwan Akiolu; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Ajayi; the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin; and the Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi. BBC takes new campaign to UNILAG through art (Punch)

BBC World Service has commissioned an art installation at the University of Lagos to support the company’s Make More of Your World campaign.  In partnership with renowned artist INSA, BBC produced a bespoke artwork at UNILAG that connected directly with its environments. Speaking with The Punch, executive of BBC’s Marketing Department, Kate Jacobson, said the artwork was commissioned to promote their Nigerian language services. “BBC offers language services in Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. We use the university because it is a place of information and the youth are here. We collaborated with INSA because he goes to different cities of the world to create something out of nothing for the benefit of everyone,” she stated. Read more

ConnectNigeria holds Business Mixer in Lagos (Independent)

ConnectNigeria, one of the biggest business portals in the country, has organised what it termed Business Mixer in Lagos where business people, entrepreneurs and others gathered to exchange ideas on how to move their businesses to the next level. Lagos-Ibadan rail: December deadline not feasible, says NASS (DailyTrust)

The joint National Assembly Committee on Land transport is not convinced that the December deadline for the completion of the 156-kilometer Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge is feasible. Members of the Senate and House of Representatives who inspected the project Friday said the deadline set aside by the Federal Government is doubtful.  Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Gbenga Ashafa who addressed newsmen at the inspection disclosed that the contractor has asked for an extension of the project delivery timeline. Shippers’ Council, NPA’s intervention halts truck owners’ strike at Lagos ports (Guardian)

Sequel to the intervention of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the truck owners and driver have suspended their six day old strike at Lagos ports. The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, NSC, Hassan Bello, Thursday, pleaded with the Nigerian association of road transport owners (NARTO), to call off their strike, just as the NPA said it has launched an investigation into the grievances of the workers.The State Chairman, Dry Cargo Section of NARTO, Inuwa Abdullah, confirmed to The Guardian yesterday that strike has been suspended and members have started lifting containers. Shoprite to pick PET bottles from Lagos shoreline (Punch)

Shoprite has announced that it is set to pick plastic bottles from the Lagos shoreline. It noted in a statement on Thursday that Africa’s biggest clean-up, which it was organising, would   bring together over 6,000 people across the continent to clean their communities in more than 500 different events. Shoprite extended invitation to members of the public to join leading experts, thought leaders, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Wecyclers, Pick That Trash, Visionscape, Chanja Datti, Ecobaarter, Diamond Shine Nigeria, Sustainable Africa Waste Initiative, Kids Beach Garden and a host of volunteers to be part of the clean-up exercise. With a scowl on his face, Elendu Uche, a businessman, shook his head slowly, letting out a deep sigh. Sitting behind the wheel of his Honda Camry, he was soaked to the skin with sweat as the afternoon sun bared its fangs ferociously. His frustration was palpable and he was not making an attempt to hide it. He had been stuck in a gruelling traffic jam for over four hours at Mile 2, while returning home from Oshodi. Galadimawa massacre: security expert calls for police reforms (DailyTrust)

President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria (AISSON), Dr. Ona Ekhomu has called on the Federal Government to initiate urgent reforms of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to save police lives. Ekhomu said that the police reforms were overdue as evidenced by the rise in killings all over the country, intentional targeting of law enforcement officers and extremely high fear index in the country. He mourned the seven gallant officers killed in cold blood at Galadimawa, urging the Inspector-General of Police to deploy his best investigative assets – human and technical to detect the actual perpetrators. Sex-for-bail scandal rocks Bariga Police Station (Nation)

Do officers harass women for sex before granting them bail at the Ilaje Police Division in Bariga, Lagos State? This is the puzzle Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal has asked the Gender Unit of the Command to unravel following allegations of sexual harassment against an officer at the station. A widow, Mrs Adebukola Mowette, is alleging that an officer, simply identified as Egi asked her for sex to grant her bail. “He fondled my breasts and threatened to ensure I rot in prison if I refused to sleep with him. He said in jail, they will shave the hairs on my private parts and those on my head,” the woman told The Nation yesterday.” Mowette, who was detained on June 25, after a fight with a man, said she was yet to get over the humiliation and harassment she went through. 3-month-old baby abandoned in Lagos, dies (NewTelegraph)

A three-month-old baby girl was yesterday dumped at a refuse site opposite GT Bank on Apapa Road, by St Peters Pry School fence, Costain area of Lagos Mainland Local Government. The baby was confirmed dead by the evacuation team consisting of the environmental health officers and some other regulatory agencies. The baby was discovered by a pass er-by who raised the alarm which drew residents to the scene while some alerted relevant agencies. The baby appeared motionless, malnourished, sick and lifeless. But for several minutes no one could move near her to confirm if she was dead or alive. Read more

Lagos to storm NYG with 300 Athletes (Independent)

Lagos State will storm the National Youth Games  (NYG) in Ilorin with 300 athletes, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Babatunde Bank-Anthony has said. Bank-Anthony made the disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos while speaking on the state’s readiness for the Youth Games coming up in September. According to him, the state would provide a strong contingent but not with a must win mentality; adding that youth Games were developmental activities. Read more
