Lagos woos German investors, highlights opportunities in LFTZ (Punch)

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has called on German investors to tap into the state’s business opportunities, assuring them of sound fiscal policies and robust legal and regulatory framework that protect investments and guarantees returns. Ambode also assured would-be investors of access to a large market, including major African markets; a burgeoning middle class with disposable income, a stable political environment and a safe and secure business environment. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, disclosed this on Wednesday while delivering a keynote address at the 7th German-Nigerian Business Forum in Lagos, according to a statement on Thursday. Motorists warned against calls while driving (Punch)

The Lekki Concession Company Limited says it is set to partner the police and other law enforcement agencies to prosecute motorists using mobile phones while driving on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The Head of Route and Incidents Management, LCC, Mr Michael Aina, said on Thursday that the company took the decision in conjunction with law enforcement agencies to reduce the rate of accidents on the road. He stated that any motorist found making use of a mobile phone while driving on the Lekki-Epe Expressway would be arrested and prosecuted. Aina said, “We have warned motorists several times on the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. The use of the mobile phones distracts them and this has led to some avoidable accidents. Badagry presents N1.9bn budget (Nation)

The Badagry Local Government has presented a total sum of N1,929,889,099.38 as its total budget for the 2018 fiscal year. The Chairman of the council, Hon. Olusegun Onilude, presented the budget tagged “Budget of Hope” to the people of the local government area on Thursday at the council secretariat. He said out of the total sum, the capital expenditure would gulp 27 per cent as against 73 per cent of the recurrent expenditure. “This is an improvement on the last year’s budget in which 11 per cent was voted for the capital expenditure of the local government, “ he said. Onilude pointed out that the budget was to give hope to all the residents in the area since it was meant to give them a sense of belonging by the provision of projects that would impact positively on their well-being. Ambode promises to tackle drug abuse (Punch)

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday reiterated his administration’s commitment to fight drug abuse in the state. The governor stated this at the inauguration of the Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse (LASKADA) in Agidingbi, Ikeja, adding that the menace of drug abuse was on the high side. The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello, explained that the present administration was committed to a prosperous Lagos, adding that it was necessary for all Lagosians to be united in fighting the drug abuse monster which was capable of truncating the future of youths in the state. African Industries partners Lagos Island Rotary on blood bank project (Nation)

The African Industries Group Limited, Agbara, Ogun State has partnered Lagos Island Rotary Club on free blood bank donation project in Agbara. The project is aimed at saving the lives  of those with such needs for blood during surgeries. The club, recently acclaimed the Rotary Mega Club of Africa, and the group are partnering as part  of  their  social  corporate  responsibilities to alleviate the suffering of the teeming masses, while identifying with their yearnings and expectations,  promptly and adequately. CodeLagos: 337 Schools to participate in Coding Competition (Independent)

Obafela Bank-Olemoh, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education, said on Thursday said that over 337 schools across the six educational districts in the state are set to slug it out in a four-day Code Week Competition. Bank-Olemoh, in a statement, said that participating schools, including government and private schools, through the competition, being put together by the state’s Ministry of Education, through the CodeLagos initiative, would be exposed to the world of computer programming as well as foster the rapid growth and development of coding skills among students. Lagos, NARTO to jointly clean Apapa (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has said it will collaborate with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to clean the Apapa area. The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti made this known during a tripartite meeting with the officials of the Ministry of the Environment, Apapa Local Government Area and NARTO in Tin Can, Apapa on Thursday. Durosinmi-Etti said, “The state government will massively deploy its facilities to ensure that litter along the road median on the Tin Can-Coconut section of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway is cleared in record time. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Holy Ghost/Lagos Province 26 Zonal bi–annual congress will hold on June 27 and end on July 1 at 6 pm daily. With one voice, All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful in Alimosho Federal Constituency have pledged their support for the party, its elected and appointed leaders ahead of the 2019 elections. Apapa traffic hikes container transport fee by 1100% (Vanguard)

The chaotic traffic situation at the seaports in Lagos has resulted in about 1100 percent hike in the cost of transportation of imported goods from the ports in Apapa to surrounding towns in Lagos. Vanguard’s finding revealed that transportation of a 20 feet container from Apapa to Ikeja which used to be N25,000 has now risen to about N300,000. Confirming the above, President/CEO of NICSOL Worldwide Investment Limited, Mr. Nicodemus Odolo, said the bad roads have affected the movement of goods to and from the port as well as the cost of movement of consignments to and from the port. LASIEC pays last batch of ad-hoc personnel (Nation)

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has paid the last batch of ad-hoc personnel engaged for last July 22 local government election. According to LASIEC, those affected submitted incorrect bank accounts, which necessitated further scrutiny to guard against paying wrong persons. The payment of the allowances to the last batch of ad-hoc personnel took place at six designated centres across the state between Wednesday and yesterday. The payment centres were the premises of Alimosho, Oshodi/Isolo, Epe, Lagos Island and Oto-Awori local governments and LASIEC Headquarters, Yaba. Read more

WARIF seeks end to sexual violence, launches Boys Conversation Café (Guardian)

One in four boys are survivors of rape and sexual violence; nearly 100 per cent of boys are involved in alcohol and substance abuse; one in five boys will walk away rather than intervene when they see a girl being harassed; and 81 per cent of teenage boys believe that a rape survivor is responsible for the abuse because of her mode of dressing.These were some of the shocking outcome of a recent survey conducted by the Women At Risk International Foundation (WARIF) amongst secondary school boys between the ages of 13 and 18. Speaking at a press conference on the World Refugee Day to make the survey report public, founder of WARIF, Dr. Kemi Dasilva-Ibru, said a new initiative, Boys Conversation Café, has been launched to address to the disturbing discoveries. Popular actress Toyin Abraham has owned up to her mistake and finally apologized to colleague and friend Mercy Aigbe, for calling her a fake friend and home breaker on social media. Mike Adenuga’s son, lover clash over child’s custody (Punch)

Eniola, the son of telecommunications cum business mogul, Mike Adenuga, has been accused of allegedly abducting his daughter, Athena. Punch Metro learnt that the 28-year-old, accompanied by some policemen, allegedly went to pick up the three-year-old at her school in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Friday, May 18, 2018. He was alleged to have refused to release the child to her mother despite a court order which reportedly granted him access to the child only on weekends. Police debunk masked lady’s allegation of opulence against Inspector (SUN)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Thursday, debunked allegation raised by a masked lady in a video on the social media accusing a police Inspector, Marcel Nnabugwu, of living in opulence and above his means. The lady in the said video which had since gone viral on the internet, had alleged that Nnabugwu owns a property at No. 27, Remi Fani-Kayode Street, GRA, Ikeja worth N250 million, as well as exotic car with a customised license plate number titled “MCON”. The lady had further alleged in the video that the moment the officer in question enters into any night club, the club shuts down to all customers to attend to his needs. Read more

Lekki doctor flogs, orders nurse to kneel down (Punch)

A doctor in the Lekki area of Lagos State, Dr Emmanuel Okolo, has been accused of brutalising a nurse, Dorcas Adeyera.  The incident happened at the Awoyaya Hospital and Maternity Centre, Ibeju Lekki. Punch Metro gathered that Okolo and Adeyera’s misunderstanding stemmed from the treatment of a patient rushed into the medical facility in the early hours of Monday. Okolo was alleged to have frowned on the admission of the accident victim without his consent, blaming Adeyera for the action. The medical doctor allegedly summoned the 23-year-old into his office and ordered her to kneel down.  When the victim refused, 35-year-old Okolo was alleged to have dealt her several slaps and also flogged her with a belt. Clearing agents ‘dupe Indian of N19m’ (Nation)

Two clearing and forwarding agents, who allegedly duped an Indian importer, Bhagu Chugan, of N19 million, were yesterday arraigned at an Igbosere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The defendants, Okechukwu Okpe and Michael Nwafor, were arraigned by the Zone II Police Command at Onikan, Lagos, before Mrs. O. O. Oshin. Okpe, 51 and Nwafor, 49, were charged with conspiracy, fraud and stealing. Prosecuting Inspector Steven Molo said the defendants committed the offences at 10 a.m on February 15, 2016, at 55, Martins Street, Lagos Island. Read more

Woman, twin children hit by truck in Lagos (Vanguard)

Doctors at the Igando General Hospital in Lagos area battling to save the life of a mother and her twin children who were hit by a truck suspected to be that of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency , LAWMA Thursday, in Igando area of state. Eye witnesses said that driver of the truck with plate number FKJ 267 XW was driving against traffic, to dispose refuse at a dump site when tragedy occurred. The unidentified woman according to eye witnesses was about crossing the road, unaware that the truck was approaching. Angry residents who described incident of such along that route as one too many, shattered the windscreen of the truck. But the driver reportedly fled before the mob arrived. Read more

Lagos U-15 Deaf School Games ends Friday (Independent)

The 4th edition of Lagos State U-15 Deaf Games, which began since Tuesday, will climax on Friday (today) at the Agege Stadium, the ‘Soccer Temple’. Already, winners have emerged in some sporting events such as the table tennis singles and doubles. Athletics, which commenced on Thursday, will have some of its finals taking place on Friday in the presence of dignitaries who are coming to grace the final ceremony.
