Guns recovered as landlord shoots okada union chair over rent (Punch)
A landlord, identified simply as Afuye, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly shooting his tenant, Olaoluwa-Daniel Yaya, over outstanding rent at their place of residence on Mosalisi Street, Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.
Yaya told PUNCH Metro that he pleaded with his landlord to give him more time to make the payment, but after he left for work on Saturday, he received a call from his wife that Afuye and his wife were making trouble with her.
When Yaya returned home and went to meet the landlord, he alleged that Afuye suddenly brought out a gun and shot at him six times, adding that his wife collapsed at the sound of the gunshot.
He said, “I owe my landlord, Mr Afuye, for one year and three months, and I already appealed to him to give me more time to make the payment. I am the chairman of motorcycle operators in Sango; on Saturday, I was at work when my wife called to inform me that my landlord and his wife were making trouble with her because of the indebtedness. Clearing agents arrested as NDLEA intercepts N32b cocaine at Lagos port (Punch)
Cocaine worth N32 billion has been recovered in a consignment at the Tincan Port in Lagos by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
It was gathered that the consignment, which arrived Nigeria from Brazil on board a vessel marked MV SPAR SCORPIO was placed on surveillance for some days before two clearing agents showed up on Monday to clear it.
The Commander, Tincan Port Command of the NDLEA, Sumaila Ethan, said the clearing agents were arrested, while the consignment was searched and the substance weighing 43.11kg was found in it.
He said, “After a thorough search, we discovered 40 compressed parcels, which after laboratory investigations, tested positive for cocaine. The two clearing agents have been taken into custody, while we continue with the investigation. The seizure is no doubt an attestation to the renewed vigour in the operations of the agency. Read more
58 miscreants apprehended as Lagos Island clashes claim one (Punch)
Residents of Itafaji and Agarawu on the Lagos Island in Lagos State have called for the intervention of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to quell the ongoing tension caused by clashes among youths in the area.
This development resulted from the death of one Tiroo, who was allegedly shot dead by the Agarawu boys during an attempt to rob residents of Itafaji on Sunday.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased joined other youths in Itafaji area to resist the attack allegedly launched by the Agarawu boys.
According to eyewitnesses, the Itafaji youths were resisting the attack with cutlasses when the Agarawu boys shot indiscriminately and killed Tiroo in the process.
Tiroo’s remains were said to have been buried. Read more
27 arrested during raids on Lagos criminal hideouts (Punch)
No fewer than 27 suspected criminals have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command during raids on criminal hideouts in different parts of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Sunday that the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, while acting on the order of the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, raided different black spots in the metropolis on Thursday and Friday.
He stated that the raids were to strengthen efforts to reduce traffic robbery, cultism and other social vices in the state.
Adejobi said, “In line with the commitment of the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to continually take the anti-crime fight to the dens of criminals and miscreants in the state, the police command has arrested 27 suspects in planned raids of different black spots in the Lagos metropolis in the late hours of Thursday, February 4, and the early hours of Friday, February 5, 2021. One killed as police, okada riders clash in Lagos (Punch)
One person yet-to-be-identified was reportedly shot dead while another was injured on Saturday during a clash between commercial motorcyclists popularly known as okada riders and policemen at the Itire area of Lagos.
It was learnt that some policemen from the Itire division seized motorcycles from two riders said to be Hausa around 8am and took the bikes to the station.
The owners of the motorcycles were said to have reported the incident to their members who followed them to the police station on motorcycles to protest the seizure.
In a one-minute-ten-second video of the incident obtained by our correspondent, policemen are seen firing straight bullets while trying to dodge objects thrown at them. Read more
Lagos butcher arrested for defiling two stepdaughters (Punch)
A butcher in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos State, Tunji Adeniran, has been arrested for alleged defilement of his two stepdaughters, Ope and Ola (pseudonyms), aged 10 and 14 respectively.
Adeniran, 40, had reportedly been molesting the girls, who are in Primary 5, for a long time until recently when Ola opened up to her class teacher.
City Round learnt that the teacher had during a class last week advised the pupils not to allow anyone touch their private parts when Ola suddenly burst into tears.
After the class, she was said to have taken the teacher into her confidence, narrating how Adeniran had allegedly serially abused her and her younger sister. Read more
Police storm robbers’ hideouts in Lagos, arrest five (Punch)
Some shanties suspected to be hideouts of traffic robbers and cultists in the Ikorodu area of Lagos have been raided by a special team comprising policemen from different units.
Five suspects – Tanimowo Babatunde, 41; Gbolahan Oladimeji, 25; Kabiru Atanda,30; Ibrahim Abubakri, 29 and 19-year-old Wasiu Rafiu – were arrested by the operatives.
The spokesperson for the police in the state, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Friday, said the operation was carried out on Thursday in furtherance of the promise made by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, recently at the Ikorodu Town Hall Meeting to rid the community of illegal and criminal acts.
He said, “The Commissioner of Police’s special squad hit the town on Thursday, around 6pm on sting operations. The special squad commanded by the Assisstant Commissioner of Police, Operations, comprised operatives of Rapid Response Squad, Task Force, State Intelligence Bureau, Special Anti-Crime Team, Police Mobile Force, Motor and Traffic Division, among others. 2 men sentenced to death for armed robbery in Lagos (Punch)
A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced two men, Moshood Ogunshola and Wasiu Lekan, to death by hanging.
The convicts were arraigned before Justice S.S. Ogunsanya on two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery, which contravened the Criminal Justice Act of Lagos State.
The men pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecution counsel, Adebayo Haroun, the convicts robbed one Wasiu Rasaki of his motorcycle at the Ile Eja area of Ikotun while armed with a machete. Read more
