LASG begins impounding of unpainted commercial vehicles (Guardian)

The Lagos State Government has directed the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to begin to arrest and impound unpainted commercial vehicles from Monday across the state.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, said this in a statement through the Director, of the Public Affairs Unit of the authority, Mr Toafik Adebayo, in Lagos on Sunday.

Oreagba warned that all intra-state commercial bus operators should ensure that their vehicles were painted Red or Yellow with Black Stripes or be impounded by the government.

He said that this was in view of the need to comply with the laws and regulations guiding the operation of all commercial vehicle operators.

Oreagba explain further that the warning was to ensure that commercial bus operators, especially those on intra-state services complied with the existing law of Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. Read more 

Economy, security dominate as Atiku, Tinubu skip debate (Punch)

Security and the economy took centre stage on Sunday as the presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Musa Kwankwaso and Kola Abiola of Peoples Redemption Party squared up at the Arise tv Presidential Town Hall Series on Security and Economy, in Abuja.

However, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party,  Atiku Abubakar and his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Bola Tinubu, failed to show up at the debate organised by Arise TV in collaboration with the  Centre for Development and Democracy at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Although Atiku was represented by his running mate, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Tinubu sent no representative.

But the supporters of the LP, the NNPP and the PRP who were unhappy with Atiku’s absence heckled Okowa, stating that the event was meant for presidential candidates only. Read more

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has told Nigerians not to vote for him based on ethnic or entitlement sentiments, but on the competence he comes with.

The former Anamabra State Governor stated this during the Presidential Town Hall series organized by Arise TV on Sunday.

According to Obi, he has the capacity to take Nigeria out of its current predicament and on that basis should Nigerians vote for him.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has highlighted the importance of collective effort in achieving the required development in the property sector.

Sanwo-Olu said this at a recent event held by the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Elumelu visits IDP camps, urges dredging of rivers Niger, Benue (Leadership)

The member representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, has called on the federal government to dredge rivers Niger and Benue and its tributaries as a long-term solution to perennial flooding in the country.

He stated this at the weekend when he visited flood victims in the six internally displaced persons (IDP) camps located within the federal constituency, urging the victims to see their present situation as a temporary setback.

Elumelu, who is also the minority leader of the House, prayed and glorified God with the victims and made a donation of N21 million for their upkeep, revealing that arrangements had been concluded for the provision of relief materials for the flood victims to enable them go back to their various communities when the flood would have receded. Osun APC to PDP: Stop dragging judiciary in the mud (Nation)

Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to drag it and Governor Gboyega Oyetola into whatever intra-party squabble it may be contending within its fold.

The Chairman of the APC, Prince Gboyega Famodun, in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Kola Olabisi, in Osogbo yesterday, said it was normal for someone or an association of people who were fugitive to justice to unjustifiably attribute their misfortune to anyone having nothing to do with them.

There is a lingering legal issue between the former state chairman of the opposition party, Olasoji Adagunodo and the PDP at Ikire High Court presided over by Justice Sikiru Oke.

Famodun said: “The PDP will not be the first and the last party to have won the first leg of a governorship election in Nigeria. Why is it that each time a court ruling does not favour them, the PDP has the habit of blaming either Governor Oyetola or the APC? Read more

Fire guts Tsangaya School hostel in Kano (DailyTrust)

A fire has razed down a 14-room hostel block at the Tsangaya Model Boarding Primary School in Kanwa, Madobi LGA of Kano State.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Saleh Jili, confirmed the incident while giving relief materials to the school.

He said, “We are here on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to sympathise with the school and donate relief materials with the hope that the gesture would bring relief to them.”

Jili explained that the materials included 20 bags of maize, 20 bags of rice, two bags of salt, seasoning cubes, vegetable oil, 212 blankets and 212 mosquito nets. Read more

Another act to be inducted were Judas Priest, who performed a three-song set on the night in which they reunited with former guitarist K.K. Downing and drummer and ex-member Les Binks. Frontman Halford then returned to the stage to perform ‘Jolene’ with Parton as part of her performance.

Gigi Hadid announced she’s quitting Twitter after Elon Musk’s takeover, calling the social media site a “cesspool of hate & bigotry.”

The 27-year-old supermodel announced on Instagram that she deactivated her Twitter account on Friday amid the mass layoffs, including the human rights team.

“For a long time, but especially with its new leadership,” Hadid wrote of Musk, “it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its [sic] not a place I want to be a part [sic] of.”

Nick Carter is “heartbroken” over the sudden death of his brother Aaron Carter.

Editors at TMZ reported on Saturday that the singer/rapper had been found dead at his home in Lancaster, California. He was 34.

On Sunday, Nick took to social media to post an emotional tribute in honour of his younger sibling.

“My heart is broken. Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed,” the Backstreet Boys star wrote. “Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. On the carpet of the 11th annual LACMA Art + Film Gala on Saturday, Sydney Sweeney revealed working with co-star Dakota Johnson on Sony’s upcoming Marvel film “Madame Web” was initially a nerve-wracking experience.

“I was a little nervous,” Sweeney told Variety’s Marc Malkin at the event, reflecting on her reaction to seeing her co-star in person. The actress shared how she’s been a fan of Johnson for several years. “I have to say — I snuck ’50 Shades of Grey’ in high school. My parents didn’t let me watch it and I watched it. So I’m a huge fan of hers. She’s so hot.”

“Have you told her that?” Malkin asked, to which the “Euphoria” star laughed and replied “No! But, Dakota, you’re hot and I loved working with you.”

Mr Biden and Mr Trump made their last-minute pleas to voters in New York and Florida respectively.

They are favourites to win control of the House of Representatives but the Senate is a toss-up, polling suggests.

New Iran protests erupt in universities, Kurdish region (VOA)

New protests erupted in Iran on Sunday at universities and in the largely Kurdish northwest, keeping a seven-week anti-regime movement going even in the face of a fierce crackdown.

The protests, triggered in mid-September by the death of Mahsa Amini after she was arrested for allegedly breaching strict dress rules for women, have evolved into the biggest challenge for the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution.

Unlike demonstrations in November 2019, they have been nationwide, spread across social classes, universities, the streets and even schools, showing no sign of letting up.

The Norway-based Hengaw rights group said security forces opened fire on Sunday at a protest in Marivan, a town in Kurdistan province, wounding 35 people. Read more

World women’s 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, will, tomorrow, in Abuja, receive the 2022 Shero of the Year Award.

Amusan, who won the gold medal and broke records in 100m hurdles at this year’s World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games, is among outstanding Nigerian sportsmen and women selected for various categories of the Sheroes Awards.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand wants social media companies to do more as he fears players will be targets of racial abuse during the World Cup.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were abused online after missing penalties in England’s Euro 2020 final to Italy, with just four men convicted a year later.

“I honestly think it probably will happen again,” Ferdinand said.

Holger Rune beats Novak Djokovic in Paris Masters final, as tennis’ top 10 continues to trend younger (ABC)

There are now two teenagers in the world’s top 10 tennis players after Danish 19-year-old Holger Rune beat hot-favourite Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to win his first Masters title in Paris.

Rune, who beat top-10 players Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime en route to the final, moves from 18th into 10th spot on the ATP rankings, dropping Hurkacz to 11th.

He joins 19-year-old world number one and US Open champion Alcaraz as the other teen in the top 10, with nine of the top 12 aged 25 years or under.

Russian 26-year-old Daniil Medvedev is still a relative young buck at world number five, while second-ranked Rafael Nadal and world number eight Djokovic, at 36 and 35 years old, respectively, boost the average age of the top 10 significantly. Read more 

Russell Henley coasts to PGA Tour win in Mayakoba (ESPN)

Russell Henley finally made a bogey, and that’s about all that went wrong for him Sunday as he closed with a 1-under 70 for a four-shot victory in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

Henley, staked to a six-shot lead going into the final round at El Camaleon, had the lead reduced to three when he missed a 5-foot par putt on the par-5 fifth hole.

He responded with three straight birdies, and no one got closer than four shots the rest of the way.

Henley won for the fourth time on the PGA Tour, and the first time since the Houston Open five years ago. Read more
