The Lagos State Government last Friday disbursed a total sum of N178, 431, 797 to the families of the 57 deceased staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board. Presenting the cheques to the relatives of the deceased in a ceremony held at the SUBEB Multipurpose Hall in Maryland, the Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, said the money formed the insurance package for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the board. The Federal Government was struggling yesterday to stave off an all-workers strike over the controversial minimum wage. Labour shunned a meeting called by the government and stepped up its plan for a nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The meeting was scheduled to hold at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Shi’ites name 34 members allegedly killed by security agencies (Punch)

Aviation workers will down tools from midnight today in compliance with the call for an industrial action by Labour. The strike is to press the government for the N30,000 minimum wage request. The Federal Government has proposed N24,000 minimum wage, but the governors say they can pay only N22,500. Former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke is to be extradited from Britain, The Nation learnt yesterday. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is to approach Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami( SAN) this week with a request to file charges against Mrs Alison-Madueke based on its findings. South Africa’s embattled home affairs minister said Sunday he would not resign after the country’s public standards watchdog said he lied under oath and following the leaking of a private sex video. “I’m not going to resign,” minister Malusi Gigaba told the privately owned eNCA television channel, but added “I will obviously be guided” by the President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ruling African National Congress. The US will unleash its “toughest ever” sanctions against Iran on Monday following a wave of protests across the oil-rich country. Armed Forces: Foreigners living abroad invited to join (BBC)

Foreigners living abroad will be allowed to join Britain’s Armed Forces, the government is set to announce. Currently, citizens from Commonwealth countries can only join if they have lived in the UK for five years. But in a bid to recruit more servicemen and women to the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Ministry of Defence is lifting this rule. F-SARS arrests policeman, others for snatching magistrate’s car (Punch)

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Imo State Police Command, have arrested a serving policeman, Chibuike Omego, and two others for alleged involvement in armed robbery. The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, said the cop and two others – Ebuka Nwosu and Anayo Zeigbo – were arrested between October 31 and November 2 in Enugu and Bayelsa states, respectively. Operatives of the Niger State Police Command have arrested one Dauda Yakubu of Girinya village in the Konton-Karfe Local Government Area of Kogi State for allegedly beheading one Emmanuel Sunday. Yakubu was alleged to have subsequently made away with his victim’s motorcycle. The police have arrested a 25-year-old man, Morenikeji Oguntoyinbo, for allegedly stabbing his friend, Emmanuel Ibeh, in the neck with a broken bottle during a scuffle in their residence on Benson bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos. PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened when Ibeh requested for his N400, which he gave to Oguntoyinbo to keep for him and after about an hour, Oguntoyinbo allegedly said he had used the money to place a bet on a sports betting app but was not lucky to win. Police arrest friends for extorting N1.5m from job seekers (Punch)

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended Elijah Olawale, 40, from Kwara State, and Timothy Oyewole, 25, of Ede in Osun State, for allegedly duping one Mr George Elada of the National Examination Council’s headquarters, Minna, and other job seekers of the sum of N1.5m. It was learnt that the suspects deceived their desperate victims with claims that they could get them jobs at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Kaduna. Read more
