The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arraigned owners/drivers of 146 vehicles arrested across the State for various traffic offenses.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, disclosed this over the weekend, adding that the alleged offenders are being prosecuted before the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Mobile Court).

According to him, “77 offenders are being prosecuted for One-Way Driving, 5 for Willful Obstruction, 5 for Illegal Parking, 2 for Unpainted Commercial Vehicle, 5 for Wrongful Overtaking, 4 for Driving on Walkways/Kerbs, 6 for BRT Obstructions, 10 for Reckless & Dangerous Driving, 4 for Picking/Dropping Passengers at Undesignated Bus Stops and 5 for Disobeying Traffic Control Officers among others”.

“It is disheartening that despite the state government’s vigorous public enlightenment and advocacy campaign via various media outlets, including online sensitization, on the dangers inherent in disobeying traffic rules and regulations, some recalcitrant drivers are still endangering the safety of other road users on Lagos Roads”, Oreagba stated. Popular Nigerian skitmaker, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu also known as Oga Sabinus has survived a car accident on Sunday morning.

It was gathered he was driving in Lagos when a drunk driver ram into his car.

The car could be seen from pictures taken at the seen to be damaged at the bonnet at which it was hit.

Oga Sabinus took to his Instagram Live some minutes after the incident to assure his fans that he is safe and well.

Sabinus said, “For the people calling, I am receiving messages, I am okay. Don’t be afraid. The only thing I keep saying is people should avoid drinking before driving. It is the first time I will be seeing a car driving in one lane, and another car in another lane drive into the other lane and scatter the motor. Read more 

‘Lagos most expensive place to build real estate in Africa’ (Nation)

Lagos has emerged as the most expensive place to build real estate across Africa.

Making this submission was Bruce Haswell, Director Turner & Townsend, Austria.

According to him, Lagos is the most expensive place to build in Africa at $2,056 per m2, compared to Kampala for less than half of this per square meter.

He stated this in his keynote presentation titled ‘Key signals in 2022-Is it a time for some caution or more innovation” at the 2022 Real Estate Discussions and Awards organised by Thinkmint Nigeria. Read more

Lagos: Police arrest 35 robbery suspects in 3 months (Guardian)

The police command in Lagos State on Sunday said 35 suspected armed robbers were arrested between June and August in the state.

The command’s Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Hundeyin said 13 other suspected armed robbers were killed in different parts of the state during encounters with the police within the period.

He said while 37 robbery operations were foiled in different parts of the state, 32 different arms and 78 ammunition abandoned in vehicles by suspects were recovered during same period.

The image maker said that no kidnappings were recorded within the period, but 15 suspected cultists were arrested. Read more

According to the curator, Moni Aisida, the works in this exhibition explore the concept of what it means to take that road and the myriad outcomes that could be waiting on the other side.

Lawrence Meju’s works implore us to “explore our mindscape, face all our emotions and who we are head on.” His painstaking method of documenting, sketching, cutting, measuring and pasting the paper in his works pays homage to his background in architecture. 

Working with textured paper, upcycled paper and paints, art is a channel for his introspection. His collection titled “Extranormal Portraits” is executed with a playful approach, which culminates into a series to inspire authenticity. Read more 

2023: ADC unveils Giwa-Amu as Lagos deputy gov candidate (Vanguard)

A Lagos based lawyer, Mrs. Rosemary Giwa-Amu, has been unveiled as the running mate to the Lagos State Governorship Candidate of African Democratic Party, ADC, Mr Funso Doherty.

I’ll be voice of the voiceless as first lady, says Remi Tinubu at IDP camp (Leadership)

Wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Sen Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday said she would be the voice of the voiceless, providing support for the less privileged and vulnerable Nigerians, if she becomes the country’s first lady in 2023.

Mrs Tinubu spoke when she met with Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and people with special needs at Karon-Majigi Ward of Gwarimpa and Yar Goje community of Abuja Municipal Area Council in Abuja.

She was accompanied to the IDP camps by Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of APC vice presidential candidate, Sen. Kashim Shettima, and the party’s national women leader, Dr Beta Edu, among others.

“I am here today because of the work ahead of us. You don’t just jump into the waters without learning how to swim,” she said, noting however that her visit was not to campaign, but to familiarise and give support to the less privileged and to let them know how she feels their pains. Read more

Another Nigerian student missing in Cyprus (Punch)

Barely 24 hours after an advisory offered by the management of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission against seeking education in Northern Cyprus, another Nigerian student, Abdulsamad Abubakar, has been reported missing in the country.

Abdulsamad is a 300-Level International Relations student of Cyprus Science University. He was until his reported disappearance living off-campus.

 A statement by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Saturday indicated that his mother, Dije Ibraheem, cried to the commission for intervention in locating her only child.

Balogun said Ibraheem last spoke with her 28-year-old son on the phone on August 2, when he pleaded with her mother to come for him. Read more

Nigerian Army troops have killed the second-in-command of the terrorists, Musti, who attacked, killed and abducted officers from Nigerian Defence Academy in August 2021.

However, the mastermind, Boderi Isiya narrowly escaped being killed, but several other fighters were gunned down by the troops.

According to the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, “security agencies informed the Kaduna State government of this development in an operational feedback.

Harrison Ford became visibly emotional at Disney’s D23 Expo as he debuted a teaser trailer for the latest instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

The veteran actor was joined onstage by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who appears alongside him in the film, at the convention in Anaheim, California.

The short trailer, which is yet to be released to the public, showed multiple action sequences, which included Ford riding a horse through New York City and onto the subway tracks.

The horseback chase is believed to have been filmed in Glasgow, Scotland, after a body double for Ford was seen riding through the streets last year during filming. Read more

The Crown Queen actress Olivia Colman joins Marvel Cinematic Universe (BelfastLive)

Olivia Colman, the Oscar-winning actress who portrayed the Queen in the Netflix series The Crown, is to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has been confirmed.

Colman played the Queen in seasons 3 and 4 of the historical drama television series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. During her tenure in the role of queen, the show covered the period between 1964 and 1990, beginning season 3 with Harold Wilson’s election as prime minister and ending with her Silver Jubilee. Darius Campbell Danesh’s death has been ruled an accident.

The Scottish singer died at age 41 in his Rochester, Minnesota, apartment on Aug. 11, according to a statement from his family given to Deadline.

The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to The Guardian that the former Pop Idol star died from “inhalation of chloroethane.” His death was ruled an accident.

“The results of medical examinations have confirmed that Darius’s death was an accident caused by chloroethane, which is used to treat pain and that tragically lead to respiratory arrest,” a statement from his family obtained by the outlet read. “We would like to thank everyone for their love and kindness, and ask that the family’s privacy is maintained during this difficult time.” Read more

Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin on Sunday left the Scottish retreat where she died as the late monarch embarked on her final journey with thousands of her mourning subjects expected to line the route.

A hush fell over the gathered crowd as the cortege carrying the queen’s casket exited the gates of Balmoral Castle for Edinburgh at the start of an odyssey of mourning in the United Kingdom, culminating in her state funeral in London on September 19.

Six groundskeepers had loaded the oak coffin — draped with a Scottish Royal Standard and a floral wreath — into the black hearse that was to wind its way slowly on a six-hour journey to Scotland’s capital.

BOWFT: Nasarawa FC decimates Braveheart 10-1 to reach quarter final (ThisDay)

Nasarawa Amazon Football Club, on Saturday, defeated Braveheart Ladies of Edo State in an 11-goal thriller to seal a spot in the quarter-finals of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT).

Nasarawa Amazon secured the maximum six points from their two games played so far in the competition after defeating Braveheart Ladies 10-1, at the University of Benin Sports Complex.

The team won their first game on Thursday against FC Robo Queens 2-0.

In the other game yesterday, Royal Queens Football Club defeated RoyalToms International 2-0 to go through to the quarter final of the 2nd edition of the tournament. Edo Queens top  Group B with 6 points.

Chelsea have reportedly received a boost in their pursuit of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao.

Talks over a new contract have hit an impasse after the Italian club balked at his demand for over £6m-a-year to remain at the San Siro, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Leao also wants the Serie A club to contribute towards the £14m he was ordered to pay former club Sporting Lisbon by the Portuguese Super Court for breaching his contract four years ago.

Liverpool icon Dirk Kuyt lifts lid on chance Ibiza meeting with Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag (Mirror)

Liverpool legend Dirk Kuyt has revealed he received coaching advice from Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag during a chance meeting at Ibiza airport over the summer. The recently-appointed ADO Den Haag coach disclosed that Ten Hag advised him to “stick to your vision” following a shaky start to the season and his managerial career.

Kuyt became something of a cult hero at Liverpool during his seven seasons at Anfield which saw him score 71 goals in 285 Champions Appearances. The Dutchman famously netted a hat-trick against United and also helped the Reds to League Cup glory in 2012 and a  League final in 2007 – a match in which he scored in a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan.

After retiring in 2017 to embark on a career coaching, Kuyt was handed his first opportunity in the hot-seat this summer with Dutch second division outfit ADO Den Haag. However, much like his old side Liverpool, their start to this season has been far from ideal.

Kuyt’s team currently languish near the bottom of the Eerste Divisie having mustered just four points from their first six games this season. Read more

Wheelchair Basketball World Championships postponed to 2023 due to FIFA World Cup (BBC)

The Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Dubai have been postponed to 2023 due to a conflict of dates with the FIFA World Cup, which will take place in neighbouring Qatar.

The tournament was due to take place from 16-27 November but has now been moved to June 2023.

The Dubai government directive is based on security, health concerns and capacity in Dubai at the time.

Great Britain are the defending men’s world champions from 2018.

Antonio Silva was once one of the very best heavyweight MMA fighters on the planet but now he is way past his best and is racking up embarrassing defeats.

‘Bigfoot’, who turns 43 next week, suffered what was his 11th consecutive defeat when he was stopped in a violent fashion by an experienced kickboxer in Azerbaijan on Saturday.

The former heavyweight title challenger was little more than a punching bag for Zabit Samedov who hurt him on multiple occasions in the first round of their match-up before the referee mercifully stepped in to wave off the fight.

Post-fight, the Brazilian was gracious in defeat and explained that he will walk away from combat sports for good after one more bout, although he did not reveal when or who he’ll be fighting.Read more

World number one Iga Swiatek says winning her first title on the US Open hard courts provides confidence that the “sky’s the limit” for her career.

Poland’s Swiatek, 21, became the ninth woman to win a third major title before her 22nd birthday after beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in New York.

It is her second major win in 2022 and first not on the French Open clay.

Ally Ewing takes one-shot lead over Maria Fassi in Cincinnati (Globe&Mail)

Ally Ewing got off to a fast start and fired a 5-under-par 67 in Saturday’s third round to take a one-shot lead at the inaugural Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati.

Ewing sits at 16-under 200 for the tournament, one shot ahead of Italy’s Maria Fassi, who matched Ewing’s 67 at Kenwood Country Club.

China’s Xiyu Lin (70) is alone in third place at 14 under, two shots back. Four players are tied for fourth at 12 under, four shots behind Ewing.

Ewing birdied three of her first four holes and finished with six for the round. Her only blemish was a bogey on the par-4 18th hole. Read more
