LASTMA arrests 19 hoodlums, impounds 123 vehicles (Punch)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has disclosed that the agency arrested 19 suspected hoodlums for extorting unsuspecting members of the public in the state.

The Public Relations Officer, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed in a statement made available to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, stating that a preliminary investigation had shown that the hoodlums had been caught using fake identity cards to trick unsuspecting drivers and roadside traders into believing they were legitimate government agents.

He said, “Nineteen notorious hoodlums were arrested during an enforcement operation over the illegal collection of parking dues from innocent motorists.

Army, Customs uncover 27 sacks of suspected drugs in Lagos (Punch)

The Nigerian Army, along with the Nigerian Customs Service, have discovered 27 sacks suspected to be containing drugs in the Badagry area of Lagos state.

The Army made this known through a statement signed by Lt. Col. Olalekan Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, and shared on their official X handle on Tuesday.

According to the statement, troops operating in the 81 Division NA Area of Responsibility intercepted two boats suspected of carrying drugs in Ajido, Badagry, based on actionable intelligence. Although the suspects escaped by jumping into the river upon sighting the troops, 27 sacks of suspected drugs were found.

Carpenter bags life jail for sexually assaulting 12-year-old girl (Punch)

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja, on Monday, sentenced a 79-year-old carpenter, Olagbade Jeremiah, to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution was able to prove the offence of defilement against the convict without reasonable doubt.

Jeremiah was arraigned on a count sexual assault by penetration preferred against him by the state. Read more

Traditional worshippers accuse Lagos cops of N258k extortion (Punch)

Three Lagos-based traditional worshippers, Adejuwon Idowu, Akanbi Samuel, and Adetayo Oyelami, have accused officers of the state police command of extorting a sum of N258,000 from them for being in possession of a bowl containing cowries and palm kernel.

One of the victims, Idowu, told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the incident happened on Saturday, March 2, in the Ijegun area of the state.

The traditionalists were said to be driving along the Ikotun-Ijegun road when the officers attached to the state Commissioner of Police Tactical Unit allegedly flagged them down for a stop and search. Read more

Driver in custody for killing 10-year-old with vehicle (Punch)

A 69-year-old commercial bus driver, Waidi Saheed, is now in police custody for allegedly crushing a 10-year-old, simply identified as Chukwudi, to death at the Iganmu-Mile 2 Expressway in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.

It was also gathered that the driver of the Nissan Coastal commercial bus, with registration number JJE-134 XK, hit the deceased as a result of speeding. Read more

BRT bus kills five-year-old in Lagos (Punch)

A Bus Rapid Transit driver, Sunday Bukola, has reportedly crushed a five-year-old simply identified as Malik to death at Palmgroove in the Onipanu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred at about 1:30 pm on Saturday.

Police arrest couple, others for producing fake currencies (Punch)

The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested a couple, a former soldier and a printer, for allegedly producing fake currencies.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the police paraded the suspects, including the couple, aged 50 and 46, at the command’s headquarters on Friday in Lagos.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer, Tunni Ayuba, who spoke on behalf of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Mr Olatoye Durosinmi, said that the arrest of the printer led to the arrest of the couple and the former soldier. Read more

Oil marketer arraigned for allegedly defrauding customers of N100m (Punch)

An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Musbau Issa, on Thursday told the Ikeja Special Offences Court how an oil marketer, Glory Benson, allegedly defrauded her customers of N100,865,000.

Benson alongside two of her companies Glonnek Energy Resources Limited and Petroyal Energy Limited are facing seven counts bordering on stealing, conversion preferred against her by EFCC.

The defendants were alleged to have dishonestly converted petroleum products worth the sum of N100,865,000 to their personal use. Read more

Suspected land grabber terrorising Lagos estate arrested after PUNCH report (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected landgrabber identified simply as Yinusa and reported to have been terrorising the Teachers’ Renaissance Estate at Mosene Village, Isiu in the Ikorodu area of the state.

PUNCH Metro reported that the residents raised the alarm over the activities of the suspect and his accomplice in the community.

The residents who are mainly retired teachers from the state civil service told PUNCH Metro that the land grabbers were encroaching on their lands through forceful means. Read more

NDLEA seizes over N10b heroin, arrests 10 suspects (Nation)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Tuesday said its operatives intercepted a record breaking heroin consignment imported into the country by a syndicate operating across three continents.

It said the operatives also arrested 10 suspects in the operation that lasted nine days, saw the blocking of 109 bank accounts and N119 million; sealing of hotels and mansions in the Ago Palace Way area of Lagos.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) gave details of the operation at a news conference held in Lagos, yesterday.

According to Marwa, the illicit Class A drugs totalling 51.90kg were carefully packaged, well labeled and concealed inside cutting machines billed for delivery at the cartel’s warehouse in the Ipaja area of the state. Read more
