The Senate of the Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday re-elected the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Olumuyiwa Noah, following the expiration of his tenure on Aug. 24. The university’s Spokesman, Adekoya Martins, told newsmen in Lagos that Noah polled 104 votes to beat Prof. Danoye Oguntola-Laguda who polled seven votes. We arrested 57 suspected homosexuals, Lagos Police allege (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Monday said it has arrested 57 persons suspected to be involved in homosexual activities in the Egbeda area of the state. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi, confirmed the arrest to newsmen during a news conference. He said that the suspects were picked up on Sunday at 2 a.m. while they were performing gay initiation rites for newly recruited members. Read more

The United States Embassy in Abuja has refused to respond officially to a report in the Financial Times (FT) of London, where US President Donald Trump was alleged to have described President Muhammadu Buhari as not only being ailing but also lifeless. The FT in its report of the planned meeting between Trump and his Kenya’s counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, billed for Monday, had it that Trump after meeting with Buhari last April, the first with any African leader, told his aides, “he never wanted to meet someone so lifeless again”. Rabiu Kwankwaso, will officially declare his presidential ambition for the 2019 election on Wednesday, a statement by the Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign Committee, has said. The statement, signed by a member of the committee Taiwo Adekanla, was released in Abuja on Monday. It said that Rabiu Kwankwaso, a senator representing Kano Central, would join the presidential race at a rally to be held at the Eagle Square in Abuja. The Nigerian Navy in Bonny, Rivers State, says it seized about 1.22 million litres of adulterated diesel from six crewmen believed to be smugglers. The suspects, who were arrested along the state waterways, were alleged to have smuggled the petroleum products, worth about N350 million from Lagos. Ibrahim Gwaska, the Acting Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base, Bonny, presented the eight suspected smugglers, vessel and diesel to journalists on Monday. Read more

A 40-year old house wife, Aisha Alhassan on Monday dragged her ex-husband Murtala Ishaq before Magajin Gari Sharia Court in Kaduna over alleged abandonment of his daughter for 20 years. The complainant told the court that since the birth of the daughter 20 years ago, she had been shouldering the girl’s responsibilities. “We divorced 20 years ago when Asiya was an infant, since then, he had never cared for her needs. “I fed her, clothed her and even paid her school fees without any support from him”, she narrated before the court. 2019: National Assembly committee approves INEC’s N143 billion budget (PremiumTimes)

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved N143 billion for INEC for the 2019 general election as requested by President Muhammadu Buhari in July. The committee reached this resolution after over a week of deliberation on the matter. Buhari, in his letter to the Senate, requested that N189.2 billion be released to INEC.
