LASU Stampede: No student on admission at Igando General Hospital – Doctor (Nation)

Two students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, admitted on Monday at the Emergency Ward of the Igando General Hospital, Lagos, had been discharged from the hospital.

LASU management had on Monday explained that some anxious students, who wanted to be among the first set to write the General Nigerian Studies (GNS) 102 caused a stampede.

The incident, which happened at a 500-seat Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre in the campus, led to some of them sustaining various injuries.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the hospital on Tuesday was told that the students were discharged from the hospital that same day of the incident. Read more

Govt asked us to stop Favour’s burial — Family of LASU student killed by boyfriend (Punch)

The family of the late Favour Daley-Oladele has said that an order from the Lagos State Ministry of Health stopped them from burying her remains at the Atan Cemetery, in the Yaba Local Government Area of the State.

The PUNCH had reported that Favour, the daughter of a Pastor, David Daley-Oladele, was gruesomely murdered in a conspiracy involving her lover, Owolabi Adeeko; his mother, identified simply as Mrs Adeeko; and the pastor of a white garment church, Segun Philip, in the Ikoyi-Ile area of Osun State.

Owolabi and his accomplices after being arrested for perpetrating the crime had confessed to killing Favour. They also confessed to have dismembered her corpse and used some vital parts of her body for money ritual.

Speaking at the Atan Cemetery, Favour’s uncle, Solomon Toyeme, said the family had mobilised to the ministry of health to retrieve her corpse for the burial when they were instructed to suspend the arrangement for the benefit of the investigation. Read more

Court tries two sisters over death threat (Guardian)

A Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has put two sisters on trial over alleged forceful demand of their late brother’s property from his surviving children and also threatening the children’s legal guardian with death.

The defendants: Chiugo Nnagbogu, 50, and Ngozi Nnagbogu, 45, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and demanding property by written threats. They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Dec. 10, at Pure Unik Global Link Services Ltd, located at No. 13, Glover Street, Ebute-Meta, Lagos. Read more

Nine die after boy picks discarded grenade in bin (BBC)

A grenade that a child picked up from a bin on the Nigeria-Cameroon border has exploded, killing him and eight others.

Twenty-six people were also wounded in the blast on the Nigerian side of the border, a Cameroonian official said.

The child, believed to be under 10, mistook the grenade for scrap metal which he intended to sell, witnesses said.

It is unclear who left the grenade in the bin, but the area has been hit by an Islamist insurgency. Read more

NIS gives clearance procedures for international travellers (Nation)

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has stated the clearance procedures for international travelers as contained in the Immigration act 2015 and immigration regulation 2017.

The Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Sunday James, disclosed this in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

James said that in line with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) guidelines on international travel, all persons crossing Nigeria’s international border are to comply with the procedures on passenger clearance. Read more

Ikea to pay family $46m after child killed by falling drawers (BBC)

The Swedish furniture giant Ikea has agreed to pay $46m (£35m) to the parents of a child who was killed when a chest of drawers fell on him.

Jozef Dudek, 2, suffocated in May 2017 when the company’s Malm drawers toppled over at the family’s California home.

The item, which weighs 70lbs (32kg), had been recalled a year earlier over safety concerns after three other children were killed.

It is the largest child wrongful death settlement in US history, lawyers say. Read more

Woman, 31, ‘sexually assaulted by Dubai cab driver after falling asleep in his taxi’ (DailyMail)

A British woman has been sexually assaulted after falling asleep in a taxi in Dubai.

The 31-year-old said she was attacked by the 25-year-old Pakistani driver as he drove her home following a night out in November last year.

The woman told a court in Dubai that she climbed into the taxi at 11.35pm and asked the man to take her home to the Silicon Oasis area of the city.

She then fell asleep, and woke up to find that the driver had parked in a secluded area near her home full of under-construction buildings.

‘He touched my body and kissed me. I was shocked and pushed him away asking him to stop,’ she said. Read more

Stampede during funeral for Iranian commander kills 35 – report (DailyTrust)

A stampede among mourners during the funeral ceremony for a slain Iranian commander in the southeastern city of Kerman killed 35 people and injured 48 on Tuesday, media reports. According to the Young Journalists Club website, which is affiliated to state television, tens of thousands of mourners poured on to the streets of Kerman for the funeral of Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq on Friday.

His body had been taken to Iraqi and Iranian cities before arriving in Kerman for burial. Read more

US denies Iran’s foreign affairs minister visa (Guardian)

Iran’s foreign minister said Tuesday he has been informed by UN chief Antonio Guterres that Washington has denied him a visa for a trip to UN headquarters in New York.

“What we know is that the US State Secretary (Mike Pompeo), in a call to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said: ‘We did not have time to issue a visa for Mohammad Javad Zarif and we will not issue a visa’,” Zarif said.

“The Secretary-General responded by saying that it is Iran’s right to take part in this session,” Tehran’s top diplomat said, quoted by semi-official news agency ISNA.

So far there has been no official confirmation from Washington that it has rejected Zarif’s visa application. Read more

Osaka opens year with tough win over Sakkari (Punch)

Japanese star Naomi Osaka came from a break down in the third set to overcome Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the first round of the WTA Brisbane International on Tuesday.

Sakkari sniffed an upset when she won the second set in a tiebreak then broke Osaka’s opening service game of the third set, but the former world number one dug deep and won 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3 in a two-hour opening-round clash.

Osaka, the tournament’s third seed, said she was pleased with her first match of the year after she was forced out of the WTA Finals in October with a shoulder injury.

Liverpool have signed a multi-year kit contract with Nike (DailyMail)

Liverpool have confirmed they have agreed a multi-year sponsorship deal with Nike from the start of next season with the contract worth a record £80million per year.

Their partnership with the American sports and footwear brand is due to start on June 1, 2020 with Nike to kit out the senior men’s team, women’s side, academy squads, coaching staff and Liverpool FC Foundation.

Liverpool’s deal with Nike will see the club earn more than Manchester United’s current contract with adidas, which seems them bring in £75m a year. Read more

Chelsea run a loss despite Abramovich input (Guardian)

Chelsea made a loss of almost £100 million ($130 million) last year despite owner Roman Abramovich pouring nearly a quarter of a billion pounds into the Premier League club, their figures for 2018/19 released on Tuesday show.

Amongst their expenditure was yet another payout to a sacked manager — this time £26.6 million to Italian Antonio Conte.

Max Verstappen extends Red Bull deal until 2023 (BBC)

Max Verstappen has extended his deal with Red Bull until the end of the 2023 season.

The 22-year-old Dutchman has been with the team since being promoted from Toro Rosso part-way through the 2016 season.

“Red Bull believed in me and gave me the opportunity to start in Formula 1 which I have always been very grateful for,” said Verstappen.

Stefanos Tsitsipas completely lost his head during his ATP Cup encounter with Nick Kyrgios, and managed to injure his father during an angry racquet smash. Tstisipas, the Greek world No. 6, caught his father Apostolos – who is also Team Greece’s captain in Brisbane – when he assaulted the courtside chairs after losing the first set to the Australian. Kyrgios had just pinched it in a tiebreak, drawing a furious response from Tsitsipas – who won the ATP Finals at the O2 in London to end 2019 – and he lost his cool, leaving his father petrified as he smashed a racquet in close quarters.

Abd’Allah: I wish Enyimba the best (Nation)

Coach Usman Abd’Allah said he left Enyimba International FC of Aba on his own volition, adding he was least perturbed over the purported claim that he was sacked by the management of the club.

In a terse media release on Monday, Enyimba’s long-serving chairman Felix Anyansi-Agwu was quoted as saying that the club relieved Abd’Allah  of his duties in order to stop recent poor results.
