LASU student robbed, deflowered us –Victims (NewTelegraph)
An Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos, Monday heard how two Muslim students (name withheld) of the Lagos State University (LASU) were allegedly robbed and raped at gunpoint by a fellow student.
The students, who were both wearing “hijab” (an Islamic garment which covers the body leaving the eyes uncovered), told the court that they both lost their virginity during the attack.
The victims, who are students of the Art and Education Faculties of the institution, testified as witnesses in the trial of a fellow student of LASU, Afeez Ogunbowale, for alleged armed robbery and rape. Read more
Man docked for raping teenager in Lagos (Vanguard)
A 22-year-old man, Johnson Alazi, who allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl was on Monday remanded in a correctional centre by the Ikeja Chief Magistrates Court, pending legal advice.
The plea of the suspect was not taken and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, ordered that the suspect be remanded in Kirikiri prison, Lagos.
The magistrate, however, ordered the police to duplicate the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice and adjourned the case till December 5 for mention. Read more
Boko Haram: Sanwo-Olu assures residents of adequate security (NewTelegraph)
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated the government’s commitment to safety of residents and visitors to the State following the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects.
The governor, in a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, praised the gallantry officers of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army who foiled an attempted attack on one of the universities in the state.
Apparently referring to operation that led to the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects by the military operatives, the Commissioner maintained that the security apparatus of the State had strategies in place to forestall any threat to the existing peace in Lagos. Read more
LASTMA officer slaps musician for recording assault (Punch)
A Lagos-based musician, Lobaloba Ajanaku, has accused a yet-to-be-identified female officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority of assaulting him for recording how she deflated the tyres of an Uber driver.
Ajanaku, in a post on his Instagram page, said he ordered an Uber and while the driver parked for him to get into the car, the officier deflated two of the tyres of the vehicle with an iron rod.
The musician noted that while he was recording the incident, the officer allegedly slapped him and tore his shirt, adding that he was made to sleep in police cell for two days and part with money before he was freed. Read more
Cop shoots laundryman for snatching colleague’s lover (Punch)
A Lagos-based laundryman, Blessing Demian, has demanded justice after he was allegedly shot in the leg by a policeman in the Oke-Afa, Isolo area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Demian was coming back from work on September 14 around 9.45pm when he was allegedly shot in his right leg by a policeman, Kenneth Kadire, of the Ejigbo Police Station, for allegedly marrying a woman, whom his colleague once had an affair with. Read more
Banks’ borrowing from CBN rises by 72% to N6.2 trn in Q3’19 (Vanguard)
There are indications that many banks are still under increasing liquidity pressure as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s, CBN, said their borrowings from the apex bank’s Standing Lending Facility, SLF, rose by 72 percent to N6.2 trillion in the third quarter of 2019 (Q3’19) even as their deposits in the apex bank dropped by 12 percent to N14 trillion during the period.

The apex bank disclosed this in its Economic Report for Q3’19. The borrowing was N3.6 trillion in Q2’19.
The report stated: “The banks continued to access the CBN’s Standing Facilities to square up their positions either by borrowing from the standing lending facility (SLF) or depositing their excess liquidity at the standing deposit facility (SDF) of the CBN at the end of each business day. Read more
Sir Lindsay Hoyle elected Speaker of House of Commons (BBC)
Labour MP and deputy Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has been elected by MPs as the new Commons Speaker, after John Bercow stepped down.
After winning the final round of voting against Chris Bryant, Sir Lindsay was dragged to the chair by MPs, where he pledged to be a “neutral” Speaker.
He also paid tribute to his daughter, Natalie, who died in 2017, saying she would “always be missed”.
The Speaker keeps order in Commons debates and calls MPs to speak. Read more

A wife and her lover have been convicted of murdering her wealthy farmer husband after sharing pornographic fantasies of torturing and killing him for months. William Taylor, 69, disappeared just before his 70th birthday last June, with his skeletal remains eventually found waist-deep in mud by a fisherman on a secluded riverbank near one of his farms in Gosmore, Herfordshire. His body was so decomposed that experts told St Albans Crown Court that determining a cause of death was impossible. Read more
Paris climate accords: US notifies UN of intention to withdraw (BBC)
The United States has formally notified the United Nations of its intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
The notification begins a one-year process of exiting the global climate change accord, culminating the day after the 2020 US election.
The agreement brought together 188 nations to combat climate change.
Announcing the plan last month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the agreement had imposed an “unfair economic burden” on the United States. Read more
Facebook unveils new logo (Punch)
Facebook on Monday unveiled a new logo to represent the Silicon Valley company, distinct from its core social network.
The move aims to highlight the Facebook “brand” which operates a range of apps and services including messaging, photo-sharing, virtual reality and is developing wallets for digital currency.
The new branding, basically the company name in crisp lettering, will be stamped on its “family” of offerings including WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Oculus, Workplace, Portal and Calibra, according to chief marketing officer Antonio Lucio. Read more

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, is reportedly eager to sign £86m rated Nigeria winger, Samuel Chukwueze, as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, Sports Extra reports.
Salah’s future at Anfield has been shrouded in doubts with Real Madrid and Barcelona preparing a bid for the Egyptian star next summer.

Tottenham have appealed against Son Heung-min’s red card for his tackle on Andre Gomes, which led to the Everton midfielder’s horrific ankle injury.
Gomes had surgery on Monday on a fracture dislocation to his right ankle.

Liverpool FC lead top European rankings for the first time in history (Vanguard)
Liverpool have moved ahead of Barcelona and Man City to lead the list for the first time since its inception in 2007, having made remarkable progress under Jurgen Klopp.
Upon Klopp’s arrival in 2015, Liverpool were considered 27th in Europe and moved into the top five for the first time in April, but victory in the Champions League final and results since have improved this further.

Ex-international, Jonathan Akpoborie, has backed Italy striker, Mario Balotelli, for attempting to walk out of the pitch after being racially abused in Brescia’s 2-1 loss to Hellas Verona on Sunday in the Italian Serie A, also revealing he faced racial abuse during his playing time in Germany.

Madiea Ghafoor has been jailed for eight and half years (Metro)
An Olympic sprinter caught with £2 million of drugs claimed she thought she was carrying doping materials.
Madiea Ghafoor was jailed for eight and a half years today after she was caught during a routine border check.
Officials found 50kg of ecstasy tablets, 2kg of crystal meth and 11,950 euros in cash in the boot of her car.
The Dutch athlete, 27, was found guilty of drug smuggling and trafficking. Read more

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been give four matches to convince the board he remains the right man for the club. The Spaniard’s position has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks with Arsenal winning just three of their last nine league matches. Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Wolves means the Gunners are already six points off the top four and they face rivals Leicester City at the KingPower Stadium next weekend. The club have distanced themselves from claims that they have opened talks with Jose Mourinho over replacing Emery but the pressure remains on the Spaniard. Read more

Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, is highly rated at Leicester.
His scintillating performances for the KingPower outfit has endeared him to the Foxes’ faithful and at the same time courted the admiration of league leaders, Liverpool, who were reportedly considering a £50m bid for the Super Eagles star last season.
The Nigeria international has been a mainstay of the Foxes ever since completing a £17m switch from Genk in 2017.
And according to Spanish website, futbolera 10, via their Instagram handle, Ndidi is the best recruitment the Foxes have made since N’golo Kante.
