Nigerian singer, Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has revealed how the late veteran singer, Sound Sultan accepted, fed and clothed him when he had nothing.

The ‘‘Who is your guy?’’ singer made this known while paying tribute to the late singer via his Instagram page on Friday.

Spyro, who recently bought a house for himself, expressed sadness that Sound Sultan was not alive to witness his success, adding that he will forever be grateful to him for his mentorship. Read more

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said the commission is zeroing on those hiding under real estate to perpetrate money laundering and other financial crimes.

Speaking during a training session for journalists on effective reporting of the economic and financial crimes in Benin, Edo State, EFCC lawyer, Chris Mishela, said many estates springing up in Abuja, Lagos and other parts of the country were believed to be proceed of fraud and money laundering.

He said, “In Abuja, you see so many estates coming all over and we believe the source of this fund are unlawful funds. The funds are illegally gotten either from government or from international crime that is used to launder through estate business. Read more 

Govern with fear of God – Hamzat to politicians (Nation)

The Lagos State Dep. Gov. Dr Obafemi Hamzat has urged leaders to relate with citizens with the fear of God, as  governance is  stewardship which would  be accounted for on judgement day.

Hamzat made the appeal after observing the Eid-el-Fitri prayer on Friday at the Dodan barracks praying ground, Obalende, Lagos.

Banana Island developer planned to rake in N22b revenue – Report (Punch)

The developer of the collapsed building in Banana Island, Joe Faraday Limited, projected to rake in over N21.5bn from customers who subscribed to the seven-storey structure, findings by The PUNCH have shown.

According to an analysis of the project’s marketing information seen by our correspondent, the seven-storey building, christened “The Woodlands” consisted of 72 units of flats.

The building plan comprised a cluster of one, two, three, and four-bedroom flats as well as five and six-bedroom detached and semi-detached houses, making a total of 72 units. Read more

Traders call for govt intervention after Kwara market fire (Channels)

Victims of a fire incident that affected six shops at Oja Tuntun Market in the Baboko area of Ilorin, Kwara State are calling on the state government to establish a fire station around the market to guard against a reoccurrence.

The fire which occurred around 7 pm last Thursday was preceded by similar occurrences.

The affected shop owners said they could not explain the cause of the fire because they made use of generators since they have had no electricity for two years. Read more

Osinbajo to deliver lecture on climate change in USA (Independent)

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN will today depart Nigeria for the United States of America where he is scheduled to deliver a Special Lecture at the University of Pennsylvania, UPenn in Philadelphia.

UPenn which is one of the eight private universities known as the Ivy League in the United States was initially established in 1740 as a charity school. It was later transformed into an academy in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin, a future founding father of the United States, who also served as the first president of the Board of Trustees of the University.

The Vice President’s lecture on Monday will be themed around Climate Change and a Just Transition, and is hosted by the University’s Center for Africana Studies. Read more

MURIC tasks governments on low income housing (Guardian)

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has tasked governments at all levels to make sure that low-income houses and markets are affordable for the people. The Executive Director, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Akintola said most Nigerian workers can hardly afford the price tag of the so-called low-cost housing estates while ordinary market women who were driven out of their stalls could not pay for the shops built by governments.

H.E.R. is subtly gunning for a Tony Award. After earning her first two Grammys in 2019, an Oscar in 2021, and an Emmy in late 2022, the 25-year-old—née Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson—has now joined the production team for the Broadway musical debut of Here Lies Love.

According to Billboard, the musical tells the story of Imelda Marcos’ rise to power and subsequent fall at the hands of the Philippine People Power Revolution. The concept and show lyrics were birthed by David Byrne, who partnered with Fatboy Slim on the music.

H.E.R., who is of Filipino-American and African-American descent, expressed pride for her heritage and new role in a statement. “Filipinos are a global people. We come in all colors and build bridges across cultures. I am beyond excited to produce my first Broadway musical and forge a unique and meaningful partnership with Here Lies Love,” she explained. Ukraine war: Russian warplane accidentally bombs own city (BBC)

A Russian Sukhoi-34 fighter-jet has accidentally bombed the Russian city of Belgorod, around 40 km (25 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

The bomb left a 20m (60ft) crater and caused an explosion so large it blew a car onto the roof of a nearby shop.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said authorities had ordered the evacuation of a damaged nine-storey block of flats as a precaution.

Three people were injured and several buildings were damaged, he said. Read more
