Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly Monday reportedly impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, over multiple fraudulent allegations.
Obasa was subsequently replaced by his deputy Lasbat Meranda.
The removal of Obasa, who has been a prominent figure in Lagos politics since 1999, marks a significant shift in the state’s legislative leadership. First elected to the Assembly in 2007, Obasa had maintained his grip on power through five consecutive terms representing Agege Constituency I.
The former Speaker, who holds a law degree from Lagos State University, began his political career as a councilor in Agege Local Government Area under the Alliance for Democracy (AD )party. His tenure as Speaker has been marked by controversy, notably during the 2020 #EndSARS protests when he made controversial statements regarding police actions.
This impeachment comes as a shock to many political observers, given Obasa’s long-standing influence in Lagos politics. The transition of power to Meranda represents the first time in recent history that the Assembly has removed its Speaker through impeachment.
State Assembly sources indicate that investigations into the fraud allegations will continue under the new leadership.
