Lewis Hamilton apologises after branding his hometown Stevenage a ‘slum’ (Metro)

Lewis Hamilton has spoken out after he was slammed by fans for calling his home town of Stevenage a ‘slum’.

‘I am super proud of where I’ve come from and I hope you know that I represent it in the best way I can always,’ he said in an Instagram video.

‘Nobody’s perfect. I definitely make mistakes quite often, and particularly, when you are up in front of a crowd trying to find the right words to express the long journey you’ve had in life, I chose the wrong words.’

The Formula One champ made the slur on Sunday at the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year  awards when he said it ‘was a dream for us all to get out of the slums, that’s what we’d say, it’s not the slums, but to get out of somewhere and do something’. Read more
