#EndSARS protest stalls Evans trial (Nation)
Officials of Kirikiri Maximum Security Correctional Centre on Wednesday failed to produce kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans and his co-defendants before an Ikeja Special Offences Court to answer charges of kidnapping brought against them by the state.
It was gathered the fear of possible attack by those who might want to take advantage of the #EndSARS protests made the officials of the Correctional Center to stay away from all courts in Lagos.
Evans and co-defendants were initially scheduled to appear before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo yesterday in continuation of their trial.
They are facing two separate charges of kidnapping and murder before Justice Taiwo’s court. Read more
Court rules on Mompha’s no-case submission Nov 18 (Punch)
The Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed November 18, 2020, to rule on the no-case submission filed by Internet personality, Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, who is facing money laundering charges.
Justice Mohammed Liman fixed the date on Wednesday, after Mompha’s lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), moved the no-case submission, urging the court to dismiss the charges against his client.
Oyewole argued that despite calling 10 witnesses and tendering a load of documents, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission failed to establish a prima facie case against Mompha and his co-defendant, Ismalob Global Investment Limited.
Oyewole urged Justice Liman to dismiss the 22 counts against the defendants and set them free.
But the prosecution counsel for the EFCC, S.I. Suleiman, opposed the prayer, insisting that the anti-graft agency had substantiated its allegations against them. Read more
Five suspected traffic robbers nabbed in Lagos (Punch)
Five suspects have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly dispossessing unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables at the Ketu end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects took advantage of the gridlock on the expressway to perpetrate the crime, adding that policemen attached to the Ketu Division arrested them.
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, charged policemen in the command to be prepared to provide adequate security for all and sundry despite the ongoing protests across the state.
Adejobi said, “The Lagos State Police Command has set machinery in motion to go after traffic robbers, who harass and rob innocent Lagosians in traffic within the state.
“The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, dropped the hint on Tuesday while addressing some officers at the command headquarters, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, in preparation for police operational activities during the ember months. Read more
Lagos community raises the alarm over incessant cult clashes (Guardian)
Last week, more than 5,000 members of Ekutu community in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State were thrown into chaos following attacks and counter attacks by members of various cult groups in the area, which left a young man, Gbenga Saka, dead.
Prior to the last incident, the community members said there had been series of cult wars, which had left the once peaceful and serene town of Ekutu a shadow of itself. The residents have, however, urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu; Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa; DPO Elemoro Police State and key security agencies to come to their aid to stop further damages.
They also said the rate at which gang and cult war was ravaging most settlements in the Ibeju-Lekki surrounding required that the state government and police took decisive steps.
Narrating their ordeal to The Guardian, the traditional ruler of Ekutu, Adeboyejo Adegunwa, said: “Last week, some groups of armed cultists invaded out village and started shooting sporadically and immediately they saw that people ran for cover and left their shops, the cultists started robbing and carted away valuables. In the course of operating they also chased one of the young men in our community to the other village where he was eventually killed.” Read more
Cop, driver killed as protests spread, ground Lagos, others (Punch)
Despite the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Nigerian youths on Monday resumed protests in different parts of the country.
The protesters said aside from the scrapping of the unit, they wanted all arrested protesters released and justice for all victims of police brutality, in addition to compensation for their families.
In Lagos, the youth took to the streets and blocked strategic locations to disrupt traffic flow in the Lekki, Akoka, Surulere, Ikeja, Ajah, Alausa, Ago Palace Way, FESTAC Town, Agege, Ebute Metta, Obalende, among other areas in the state.
Hundreds of motorists were trapped in the gridlock caused by the demonstration, while some commuters were stranded at various junctions, as many were forced to disembark from vehicles and trek to their destinations. Read more
Lagos inaugurates committee to review criminal laws (Nation)
Lagos on Tuesday inaugurated a committee to review amendments to its Criminal Laws of 2011.
Its Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, said this followed the Criminal Justice Sector Reform Committee resolve to bring the laws in conformity with modern crime patterns.
According to a statement by Director, Public Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, Mr Kayode Oyekanmi, Onigbanjo spoke via a virtual platform during the inauguration.
He said the 14-member committee will conduct a thorough review of the laws, take necessary memoranda from relevant stakeholders. Read more
