2,310 violators of COVID-19 lockdown order arrested in Lagos (Vanguard)
A total of 2,310 violators of the presidential directives on lockdown and social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), have so far been arrested in five weeks, in Lagos State. Out of the number, 125 were minors.
Some of the suspects were arrested in clubs, parties and during group exercises.
Two thousand, one hundred and eighty-five of the suspects were charged to court and awarded various degrees of punishments ranging from two hours to six months community services and fines between #5,000.00 and #100,000.00.
Others were asked to write undertakings to be of good conducts and apology letters, while the 125 minors were warned and released. Read more
Driver sentenced to death in Lagos’ first virtual court sitting (Guardian)
An Ikeja High Court in Lagos Monday sentenced a driver, Olalekan Hameed, to death by hanging for the December 1, 2018 murder of Mrs. Jolasun Okunsanya, 76, the mother of his employer, Adetayo. Justice Mojisola Dada delivered the judgment in the Lagos State Judiciary’s maiden virtual court session.
The proceedings were approved by the Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, in line with the Lagos State Judiciary Remote Hearing of Cases COVID-19 Pandemic Period Practice Direction. The court session for the charge marked ID/9006C/2019, held online via a mobile app, Zoom. It began at 11:00a.m. and ended before 2:00p.m.
The judge, defendant, his team of counsel, the prosecution team led by Lagos State Solicitor-General, Ms. Titilayo Shitta-Bey and all witnesses participated in the session remotely from different locations via the Zoom app. Read more
60 Lagos-bound men intercepted in truck conveying cows (Punch)
Some security personnel, on Monday, intercepted about 60 men hiding in a truck that was conveying cows to Lagos State at the Berger end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
It was gathered that the travellers, who reportedly came from Zamfara and neighbouring states, were heading for the Agege area of Lagos.
PUNCH Metro learnt that some of the men jumped down from the truck and fled on sighting the personnel of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit), the Rapid Respond Squad, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Officers and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps at the boundary between both states. Lagos police arraign 325 curfew violators (DailyTrust)
The Lagos State Police Command Wednesday said it has arraigned 325 persons in court for violating the 8pm to 6am curfew in the state. Government had on Sunday declared the curfew as a way of gradual easing the lockdown meant to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, told Daily Trust that the 121 persons were arrested on Monday, May 4, 2020 by officers attached to the enforcement team led by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu.Read more
Nigerians demand justice for innocent man remanded for six years (Punch)
Some Nigerians, on Wednesday, demanded justice for a former inmate of the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, Lagos, Idris Saula, saying all those who had hands in his unjust incarceration for six years must be brought to justice.
They also called for investigation into the cases of other inmates, who might be suffering for crimes they did not commit.
PUNCH Metro had reported that the 36-year-old Saula was arrested in 2014 during a raid, while he was working at a construction site at Sangotedo, Ajah, Lagos. Read more
