A man armed with a gun died after a 10-hour standoff with police on a housing estate.

Officers arrived at the scene of a ‘domestic incident’ in Stanningley, Leeds at midday yesterday.

Armed police, armoured vehicles and a bomb squad were all pictured outside a property.

After attempts to negotiate, West Yorkshire Police used distraction devices to storm the Half Mile Green home 10 hours later.

The man was found critically injured and pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The force said: ‘A police operation that was ongoing at an address in Half Mile Green, Stanningley, Leeds, has concluded.

‘The man involved was taken to hospital in a critical condition and later pronounced dead.

‘An alarm was raised just after 12.36pm, with dozens of officers from multiple units descending to the housing unit.

‘But they withdrew on seeing a male at the address in possession of what appeared to be a handgun.

‘At about 10.50pm, armed officers forced entry to the address, deploying distraction devices, and found the man critically injured.

‘He was taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.’

Footage from the housing estate shows the road has been closed off, while locals are being turned away from the scene.

The force has said it has referred itself to the IOPC [Independent Office for Police Conduct] and has declared an independent investigation.

A cordon was erected while emergency services attended the scene.

Witnesses said a man was seen hanging out of an upstairs window.

One resident told LeedsLive: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before. There’s quite a lot of police here. I was just in Tesco – this is my road to go home and I was like “what’s going on”.’

Another added: ‘What’s all this? It’s never like this it’s usually so quiet.’ (Metro)
