Suspect arraigned for raping 14-year-old girl in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has announced that the suspect accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in Alakuko, Lagos, has been formally arraigned in court.

In a statement released on X.com on Wednesday, the agency confirmed that the suspect has been charged with defilement, contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The agency also stated that the suspect has been remanded in custody for 30 days, pending the issuance of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Read more

Police arrest 3 kidnappers in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three suspected kidnappers terrorising residents of the Ikorodu area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos.

Hundeyin said that the suspects allegedly attempted to kidnap a car dealer at Ebute-Igbogbo Road, Ikorodu on Tuesday before they were caught. Read more

Widower paralysed after police brutality in Lagos (Punch)

A commercial bus driver, Adewale Oseni, is seeking justice after he was allegedly brutalised by a police officer identified simply as Supol Akeem attached to Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, Lagos.

Oseni told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that he was returning from the food vendor where he had gone to purchase food for his three children on July 14 at about 10 pm when the officer accosted him.

He said efforts to show him the food he bought and also appeal to him were ignored by the police officer also said to be identified as Spider. Read more

Police arrest 2 for attempted robbery in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives attached to the Ilupeju Division of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended two suspects, Wasiu Olarenwaju, 39, and Adeolu Adeyemo, 30, for attempted robbery.

The command disclosed this in a statement posted on X.com on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the suspects attempted to rob a motorist whose vehicle broke down on the Anthony Bridge in the Ilupeju area of the state. 

The statement read, “Officers of Ilupeju Division, while on patrol within the area, arrested the duo of Wasiu Olarenwaju ‘m’ aged 39 and Adeolu Adeyemo ‘m’ aged 30, while they were attempting to rob a driver whose vehicle had broken down at Anthony Bridge, Ilupeju.” Read more

Police arrest woman for diversion of company’s N3m (Punch)

Operatives of  Lagos State Police Command have arrested and detained a 25-year-old woman for allegedly diverting N3 million belonging to a company into her account.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.

Hundeyin alleged that the suspect (name withheld) and her other co-workers, in a catering company, conspired and diverted money realised from the sale of the company’s products into their personal accounts. Read more

LASTMA apprehends fleeing driver after auto crash (Punch)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority successfully nabbed a trailer driver involved in a hit-and-run accident, on Monday, at Anthony Oke inward Oshodi area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt from a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, that the officials swiftly chased and apprehended the trailer driver who had struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the expressway near the Total Filling Station at Anthony Oke, inward Oshodi. The driver, who tried to flee the scene, was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution. Read more

Police arrest 2 for stealing vehicle parts in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Jefferson Joshua and Donatus Okoro, accused of invading a community, where they allegedly vandalised vehicles and stole parts, including the brain box.

PUNCH Online gathered from a police source on Sunday that the suspects committed the crime around 3 am on July 30 and were arrested on August 8, 2024.

Following the report of the alleged invasion and theft, it was learnt that the suspects were tracked to Ileiwe Junction in Ikotun and Idowu Street in Ajegunle. Read more

Man, 60, arraigned for failing to produce fraud suspect (Punch)

A 60-year-old man, Ajayi Hassan, has been arraigned before the Tinubu Magistrate Court in Lagos Island for failing to produce a suspect, Gabriel Adeoye Olawale, whom he stood as a surety for.

Hassan was arraigned before the court on Monday for standing as a surety for the suspect being investigated for alleged fraud.

The Police Prosecutor, Supol Jimoh Joseph, informed the court that Hassan committed the offence on December 14, 2023, at around 4 p.m. at the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos. Read more

EFCC arraigns man for alleged N600m, $50k investment fraud (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Monday, arraigned one Ayodele Toyosi for alleged investment fraud before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

The defendant was arraigned alongside his companies, Reaprite Global Limited and Agrorite Limited, on 11 charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence and stealing to the tune of N600,150,000,00 and $50,000.00.

A statement by the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said investigation revealed that the defendant allegedly defrauded some persons on the pretence that he had an interest-yielding investment in agricultural export. Read more

LAGESC, police, Army round up 68 miscreants in Lagos (Punch)

A joint operation involving the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Army has resulted in the arrest of 68 miscreants in various parts of Lagos Island.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post and videos shared on X.com on Friday.

He wrote, “During a joint operation between the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Army, 68 miscreants were arrested while conducting surveillance operations of the coastal road, Ikoyi, Oniru Beach, and other parts of Lagos Island.

“The arrested individuals will be charged to court in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.” Read more

Okada riders responsible for attack on BRT bus — Lagos police (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has stated that suspected motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders, whose motorcycles were seized, are believed to be responsible for the alleged attack on a BRT bus on Wednesday in the Orile area of the state.

The Command’s Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Friday.

Hundeyin clarified that the incident was not a case of armed robbery but rather a reaction by the suspected motorcyclists to the seizure of their motorcycles.

Hoodlums attack BRT bus, rob passengers in Lagos (Punch)

A bus belonging to the Lagos State-regulated Bus Rapid Transit with the identification number 240216, traveling from Mile 2 Terminal to Lagos Island, was attacked by suspected hoodlums in broad daylight.

The incident occurred around Alaba Suru, where occupants were robbed of their belongings.

A video of the attack, which began trending on Thursday, showed that the window glasses of the bus were shattered by the hoodlums. Read more
