Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen could face legal retaliation for revelations (CBC)

Facebook has recently taken a harsher tone toward whistleblower Frances Haugen, suggesting that the social network giant could be considering legal retaliation after Haugen went public with internal research that she copied before leaving her job earlier this year.

US law protects whistleblowers who disclose information about potential misconduct to the government. But that protection doesn’t necessarily cover taking corporate secrets to the media.

Facebook still has to walk a fine line. The company has to weigh whether suing Haugen, which could dissuade other employees who might otherwise speak out, is worth casting itself as a legal Godzilla willing to stomp on a woman who says she’s just doing the right thing.

Facebook did not respond to emailed questions. Read more

Vengeful Super Eagles tame Wild Beasts to revive Qatar 2022 World Cup hopes (Guardian)

Nigeria’s forward Victor Osimhen is challenged during the 2022 Qatar World Cup African qualifiers group 3 football match between Nigeria and Central Africa Republic. He was on target on Sunday against the CAR in Douala.

A maiden international goal for Leon Balogun and a strike from Victor Osimhen were some of the highlights at Douala’s Japoma Stadium on Sunday as a revenge-seeking Super Eagles side defeated the Central Africa Republic 2-0 to avenge last Thursday’s loss to the Wild Beasts and revive their quest for a ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup taking place in Qatar.

Gernot Rohr made three changes from the starting-XI that suffered that shock 1-0 loss to the CAR in Lagos, removing the trio of Francis Uzoho, Chidera Ejuke, and Ola Aina, and bringing in regular number one goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Chidozie Awaziem, and Ahmed Musa, who officially made his 100th appearance for Nigeria after having two of his earlier caps yanked off by FIFA.

And it was Awaziem, playing as apart of a back-three alongside William Troost-Ekong and Balogun, who turned provider for Balogun’s and Nigeria’s opening goal on 29 minutes.

After the CAR, playing in Cameroon as a result of the ongoing war in their country, had partially cleared a long throw-in from danger, Awaziem floated a cross into the penalty area for Balogun, who had remained upfront after the throw-in, to volley into the back of the net. Read more

Andorra 0-5 England: Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham seize their chance (BBC)

England’s victory was the sort that should be achieved against an Andorra side nestling between New Caledonia and the Dominican Republic in the world rankings.

It was as routine and comfortable as it gets in international football, but there was still plenty riding on this for some England players.

In Andorra’s picturesque Estadi Nacional, the Three Lions’ smooth passage towards the World Cup in Qatar continued uninterrupted – and there are still places up for grabs in manager Gareth Southgate’s team and squad.

That is why, even though Andorra are down at 156th place in those international listings, it was an important night for the likes of Tammy Abraham and Jadon Sancho.

It was also a night when Manchester City’s Phil Foden played at such an elite level that it is impossible to see how Southgate can leave him out of any England starting XI. Read more
