A middle aged man, Binuye Femi, has been arrested over an attempt to rob students of the University of Lagos. The suspect was reportedly sighted by a police patrol team trying to scale the fence of the school along community road, Akoka.

It was learnt that the suspect had climbed the wall, but was ordered by the police to come down, or risk gun shot. Read more

Probe: Ambode’s lawyer denied entry to committee room (Nation)

Lawyer to immediate past governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday appeared for the sitting of the joint committee of the state House of Assembly probing expenditures of the past governor but was not allowed into the committee room.

The joint committee has however adjoined its probe indefinitely in deference to a state high court ruling Wednesday morning that status-quo should be maintained.

The lawyer, Mr. Olaniran Obele from the chambers of Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), Counsel to former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, protested that they were not allowed into the committee meeting. Read more

Atiku loses at Supreme Court (DailyTrust)

The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeals filed by the by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the February 23 poll. The seven-man panel of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Mohammed said there is no merit in the appeal.  The Appeal was hereby dismissed.

The CJN added that the panel has been reviewing the case for the past two weeks. Read more

Presidential Election Tribunal: Supreme Court’s verdict apt – APC (Nation)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the Supreme Court’s verdict on the petition brought before it by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as apt.

The APC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, commended the apex court for dismissing the PDP and Abubakar’s petition and for refusing to be blackmailed against its conscience.

According to the party, the victory won at the Supreme Court would enable the APC-led federal administration to go ahead and face its task of delivering the Next Level programme to the people of Nigeria, congratulating President Buhari, his deputy, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), other party leaders and members of the party. Supreme Court judgment: Accept loss in good faith, Gbajabiamila urges Atiku, PDP (Punch)

The Speaker of the House of the Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has described the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the Supreme Court as a victory for democracy.

Gbajabiamila, who said though the victory of the President at the February presidential poll was never in doubt, however, expressed his appreciation of the final victory, “whereby Nigerian democracy was tested by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.”

South Africa police evict protesting asylum-seekers, arrest 100 (Guardian)

South African police on Wednesday arrested around 100 foreign nationals occupying an office building in Cape Town as part of a sit-in protest against xenophobia.

Hundreds of asylum-seekers have been camping at UN refugee agency offices in South Africa’s capital Pretoria and the coastal city of Cape Town since October 8.

The sit-in overflowed into the building housing the UN’s Cape Town office, prompting the landlord to successfully apply for their eviction. Read more

Gas cylinder blast kills five children (Nation)

At least five children were killed after a gas cylinder being used to inflate toy balloons exploded in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Wednesday, police and firefighting officials said.

Speaking with newsmen, Mohammad Rasel, an official at the Fire Service and Civil Defence department, said that the cylinder went off as a vendor inflated the balloons to sell them among children gathered on the wayside in the Mirpur neighbourhood of Dhaka, leaving four of them dead at the scene,

According to the official, the children are between the ages of 7 years and 14 years. Read more

Ekpenyong wants more private sector participation in South South sport (Guardian)

Peter Ekpenyong, whose wards, David and Rebecca, played in the final matches of the U-16 boys and girls’ categories of the just-concluded Chevron Junior Tennis Masters Championship, has called on corporate bodies within the South South region and the entire country to invest in sports development in the zone. Ekpenyong said there were abundant talents in the region, adding that helping them to build their talents would take the youths away from crime and other vices.
