Man bags death sentence for killing friend over N100 (Punch)
The Zamfara State High Court has sentenced one Anas Dahiru to death by hanging for killing his friend because of N100.
Dahiru was brought to the court in June 2017 for allegedly stabbing his friend, Shamu Ibrahim, to death .
Delivering the judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Mukhtar Yusha’u, said having listened to both sides, he convicted Dahiru for killing his friend. Read more

Dangote Refinery to commence fuel production as 1st crude shipment lands today (Guardian)
The Dangote Oil Refinery is finally set to commence fuel production as the first crude shipment arrives at the facility today, December 7, 2023.
This was confirmed in a report by S&P Global, which stated that the OTIS tanker, carrying a 950,000 barrels of Nigeria’s Agbami crude, set sail on December 6.
S&P Global added that the tanker is currently en route to Lekki, Lagos State, which is the nearest land port to Dangote’s offshore crude receiving terminal. Read more
Ogoni group moves to recall lawmakers over failed Fubara impeachment (Vanguard)
Ogoni Development Drive (ODD) says it has begun the process to recall four Ogoni lawmakers from Rivers House of Assembly over their alleged roles in the botched impeachment of Gov. Similanayi Fubara.
The lawmakers are Dumle Maol (PDP, Gokana constituency), Barile Nwakoh (PDP, Khana), Aforji Igwe (PDP, Eleme) and Bernard Ngba (PDP, Tai).
The advocacy group’s Convener, Comrade Solomon Lenu, made this known at a news conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday. Read more
Abia YPP distances herself from chairman over appointment (Sun)
The transition committee Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Victor Ikeji, recently appointed the YPP state chairman as a Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Council Chairman.
In a release signed by Bestman Eruba, YPP state Publicity Secretary, the party said its leader in the state would meet soon to take a decision on the matter.

‘Kaduna Massacre Intentional,’ Gumi hits military (DailyTrust)
Kaduna State renowned Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said that the Sunday bombing of villagers in Tudun Biri in Igabi Local Government Area of the state is intentional.
The scholar said it was wrong to target women and children, including the elderly, during war, yet the military decided to otherwise, thinking they were families of terrorists.
The scholar, who spoke while delivering his weekly lecture at the Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna, questioned that if the first bomb dropped on the people was a mistake as claimed, what of the second bomb that targeted those evacuating the bodies 30 minutes after as claimed by the villagers. Read more
NJC okays elevation of 11 Justices to Supreme Court bench (Vanguard)
The National Judicial Council, NJC, has recommended the elevation of 11 Justices to the Supreme Court bench.
The legal body took the decision at its 104 meeting that was held in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Council, in a statement it made available to newsmen through its Director, Information, Mr. Soji Oye, said it considered the list of candidates that was presented by its Interview Committee and at the end of deliberations, recommended the 11 Justices for the apex court bench. Read more

The Kogi State Police Command yesterday confirmed that gunmen attacked the secretary of the state governorship election tribunal, David Umar Mike, and made away with sensitive petition documents on the just concluded gubernatorial election in the state.
The state police command’s spokesman, SP William Aya, who disclosed this in Lokoja on Wednesday, said the attackers carted away all the petition documents filed by four political parties at gunpoint.
The documents carted away by the attackers included petitions filed by the Action Alliance (AA), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) as well as two record books and a bag containing his personal item. Read more

Governments are spying on Apple and Google users through phone notifications, US senator says (NBC)
Sen. Ron Wyden warned that foreign governments are spying on smartphone users by compelling Apple and Google to turn over push notification records, according to a letter he sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday.
Wyden, D-Ore., said his office investigated a tip from last year alleging that government agencies have been “demanding” these records from both companies. Since push notifications like news alerts, emails and social media alerts travel through Apple’s and Google’s servers, they can reveal unique insights about how individual people use particular apps, Wyden explained in the letter.
Governments can force Apple and Google to hand over these records, just like they can be compelled to share any other information they have regarding their users, according to the letter. In the U.S., however, Wyden said information about push notification records cannot be released to the public. Read more

UNLV shooting: Former college professor kills three on Las Vegas campus (BBC)
Three people were killed in a shooting at the Las Vegas campus of the University of Nevada (UNLV) on Wednesday morning.
The gunman, described as a white former college professor in his 60s, was killed in a shootout with police.

Madrid imam, Arabic teacher arrested for ‘radicalising minors’ (Guardian)
Spanish police said Thursday they had arrested a 44-year-old imam who worked as an Arabic teacher and used his position “to radicalise minors” and recruit possible Islamic State (IS) members.
The Guardia Civil police force said the suspect was arrested on November 29 following an investigation which began last year after police identified him as having links to jihadist ideology and trying to indoctrinate minors.
The suspect, who worked at a Madrid mosque, had been detained “for using his role as a teacher to radicalise the minors he taught and to recruit potential members for Daesh”, using the Arabic acronym for the IS group. Read more
