Man burnt to death for allegedly stealing Okada (Sun)

An unidentified middle-aged man has allegedly been burnt to death by angry mob who accused him of stealing a motorcycle popularly known as Okada.

The incident happened in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, at the weekend.

Locals said cases of robbery had persisted in the area despite frequent arrest of suspects. It was gathered that residents decided to take matters into their own hands by enforcing jungle justice on the victim. Read more

FEMA on high alert over anticipated downpour today – D.G  (Nation)

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has placed its emergency response team on high alert over an anticipated heavy to moderate rainfall today.

The Director-General of the Agency, Dr Abbas Idriss, said in a statement in Abuja that a weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) had indicated that FCT and its neighbouring states would experience heavy to moderate rainfall today.

He added that the forecast also predicted moderate to heavy rains in parts of Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau and Taraba states. Read more 

NDLEA arrests drug lord while ingesting trafficker with 93 cocaine wraps in Lagos hotel (DailyTrust)

A notorious drug kingpin, Charles Uwagbale, who specializes in sponsoring young Nigerians to traffick Class A drugs to Europe, especially to Italy, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) who stormed his hotel room in Okota area of Lagos State, late on Friday 21st July when he was preparing a recruited courier to swallow 93 pellets of cocaine meant for distribution in Italy.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Sunday that the 48-year-old drug kingpin, Uwagbale had recruited Uju Dominic, 35, from his base in Italy with a deal to come to Nigeria, ingest 100 pellets of cocaine on Friday 21st July and return to Italy on Saturday 22nd July.

“True to plan, upon the arrival in Nigeria, the mule was lodged in Golden Heaven Hotel located at Enoma Street off Ago-Palace way, Okota, Isolo, Lagos where Uwagbale brought 93 wraps of the Class A drug for him to swallow at 11:45 pm Friday night. Read more

Lagos Gov Poll: Appeal Court sets aside order on electronic transmission of results (Channels)

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal has set aside the judgement of a Federal High Court which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to directly and electronically upload the election results of the Governorship and State of Assembly elections from the polling units to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV).

Channels Television obtained a copy of the 28-page Court of Appeal judgement which was delivered by Justice Abubakar Umar on Wednesday, July 19.

The other two justices on the panel who agreed with the lead judgement were Justice Olukayode Bada and Justice Onyekachi Otisi. Read more

Shettima to represent Tinubu at food summit in Rome, Russia (Guardian)

Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima will on Sunday depart Abuja to represent President Bola Tinubu at two major international Summits in Rome, Italy and St Petersburg, Russia.

Mr Olusola Abiola, Director, Information, Office of the Vice President, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

Abiola stated that at the Rome event, Shettima would join other global leaders for the first Stocktaking Moment (STM) Summit themed “Transforming Food Systems for People, Planet and Prosperity,” holding from Monday, July 24 to Wednesday, July 26. Read more 

Sunday Igboho loses mum (Nation)

Embattled Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has lost his mother.

Mrs Adeyemo died Saturday evening.

Igboho confirmed her demise in an Instagram post.

The agitator, who has been unable to leave Benin Republic since his arrest and arraignment in 2021, said his mother’s death was too much to bear. Read more

Sudan civilians reportedly killed in Darfur fighting (AlJazeera)

At least 16 civilians have reportedly been killed in an exchange of rocket fire between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the war-torn Darfur region, which has seen some of the worst violence since fighting began in mid-April.

On Saturday, a local lawyers’ union said it happened in the city of Nyala, the capital of the state of South Darfur.

The Darfur Bar Association said that the fighting led to the killing of 16 civilians, including an entire family, which lost all of its members with the exception of one, who sustained injuries. Read more

The live-action small-screen “Masters of the Universe” movie has been dropped from Netflix with millions already invested.

Based on He-Man, the popular 1980s Mattel toy, the “Masters of the Universe” film has reportedly already spent $30 million on development costs and retainers to keep talent on hold.

Christopher Nolan has said he first conceived the idea of making a film about J. Robert Oppenheimer when he was a teenager.

The director’s hotly-anticipated biopic about the father of the atomic bomb came to cinemas on Friday (July 21). Nolan has said that coming of age at a time where the fear of nuclear war was particularly pronounced formed part of his motivation for exploring Oppenheimer’s story.

“It’s something that’s been on my radar for a number of years. I was a teenager in the ‘80s, the early ‘80s in England,” he told Bulletin [via FilmNews].  It was the peak of CND, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Greenham Common [protest]; the threat of nuclear war was when I was 12, 13, 14—it was the biggest fear we all had. Tom Cruise is ready to go where no actor has gone before. The 61-year-old star offered a recent update on an exciting project that is planned to be filmed in outer space. 

In 2020, it was revealed that Cruise was working with NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX on a movie that would be shot at the International Space Station. The feature would be the first narrative film to be shot out of this world.

The ambitious project received renewed interest in 2022 when Universal chairman Donna Langley spoke about it with BBC News, sharing that the story — which was pitched to her by Cruise and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman during the pandemic — “actually takes place on earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.” Read more

Rescuers recover 27 bodies in India landslide, many still missing (AlJazeera)

Hundreds of rescuers have recovered 27 dead bodies as they pushed on with a fourth day of searching for many people still missing after heavy monsoon rains triggered a massive landslide in a village in western India, according to an official.

Seventy-eight people are still unaccounted for since the landslide hit Irshalwadi village on Wednesday night in Raigadh district, nearly 80km (50 miles) from Mumbai, the Maharashtra state capital.

At least 17 of 48 houses in the village were fully or partially buried under the debris, officials said. Read more

Newcastle signed England winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester in a deal worth a reported £38 million ($48 million) on Sunday.

Max Verstappen appeared completely untroubled as he romped to Red Bull’s historic 12th win in a row with an easy victory in the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, after dispensing with pole sitter Lewis Hamilton at the first corner.

The Mercedes also lost out to the Mclarens of Oscar Piastri and Lance Stroll. However the Australian rookie was subsequently undercut by Norris who went on to claim second, while Piastri ended up passed later in the race by Sergio Perez and then Hamilton.

It was a bad day for Alpine which saw both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly taken out at the start by an accident triggered by the slow-starting Alfa Romeo Zhou Guanyu with Daniel Ricciardo’s AlphaTauri also incurring damage. Read more 

World Aquatics Championships: Ariarne Titmus and Leon Marchand break world records (BBC)

Australia’s Ariarne Titmus and Frenchman Leon Marchand both set new swimming world records on the opening day in the pool at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Titmus, 22, won a high-class women’s 400m freestyle final in a time of three minutes 55.38 seconds.

Marchand knocked 1.34secs off Michael Phelps’ last remaining world record in the men’s 400m individual medley. Read more
