Man crushes driver to death during argument in Ogun (Channels)
Operatives of the Ogun state police command have arrested a 26-year-old man, Adeyemi Babatunde for allegedly killing a 46-year-old driver, Obafunsho Ismail, over a minor argument.
The state police public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the story in Abeokuta, the state capital.
According to him,the incident occured December 8, 2022, at about 8 p.m, when the suspect, who drove a Lexus jeep with “Olu of Oya” customized number plate, hit the victim’s car from the rear and caused damage to the rear light of the said car.
“The deceased, Ismail Obafunsho, there and then came down from his car, and asked the suspect to come down for them to assess the extent of the damage in order to find solution to it” he stated. Read more
Brymo to display artwork worth N350m (Vanguard)
Nigerian singer, Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ, popularly known as Brymo, has announced his intention to exhibit a new art collection worth N35om in 2023.
Brymo, on his Instagram account on Thursday, announced the availability of the artwork will be in the first quarter of 2023.
The singer noted that one piece will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
He wrote, “Mansa will be available for collecting in the first quarter of 2023, one copy is available for sale, and it costs N350,000,000.” Read more
Shell to pay €15m to Nigerian farmers over pollution (Guardian)
Shell said Friday it will pay 15 million euros to Nigerian farmers to compensate them for damage from pipeline leaks.
A Dutch appeals court ruled last year, following 13 years of legal battles, that Shell’s Nigerian branch must pay out for a series of leaks and that the parent company must install new pipeline equipment to prevent further devastating spills.
Shell said Friday that it had reached a deal with the Dutch environmental group Milieudefensie that has helped the affected communities.
“Under the settlement The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) as operator of the SPDC joint venture, will pay an amount of EUR 15 million for the benefit of the communities and the individual claimants,” it said in a statement. Read more
Nollywood actor survives ghastly accident along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Tribune)
Nollywood actor, Ayo Silver Animashaun has taken to social media to share how he recently survived a ghastly car accident that saw his car completely damaged.
Sharing videos from the accident, Ayo revealed that he was involved in a ghastly car accident on his way back to Lagos from Ibadan, where he went to inspect a portion of land.
He explained that when he got to Magboro bus stop in Lagos, “a trailer ran me over”.
He said it left his car spinning for almost 12 seconds and his life flashed before his eyes as he felt his breath leave his lungs. Read more
Lagos generates over 2.2b cubic meter wastewater daily (Vanguard)
Lagos State Government has identified several factors affecting efficiency of wastewater management in the state, saying that it generates about 2.2 billion cubic meters of wastewater every day.
This came as the government sought for collaboration of stakeholders in the efficient wastewater management of the state.
Lagos State, with an estimated population of 20 million people, the government is faced with inadequate wastewater treatment infrastructure to treat wastewater generated in the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, stated this at a community awareness programme, with the theme: Wastewater Management and Community Involvement,” organised by Waste Management Office, held at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Read more
Man defiles 3-year-old in Lagos day care (Punch)
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has called on parents to ensure their children and wards are cared for at registered and approved schools and day care centres in the state, as a man, simply identified as Nonso, has been apprehended for defiling a three-year-old child.
According to a statement by the agency on Wednesday, the call was made by the Executive Secretary, Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, when the agency received the case of defilement of the three-year-old toddler by Nonso in a day care centre where the survivor attends.
“The case was reported by the mother of the survivor at the agency on the 14th of December, 2022.

Makinde approves N10k Christmas bonus for state’s pensioners (Tribune)
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has approved a Christmas bonus of N10,000 for every pensioner in the state.
The governor, who approved the bonus on Thursday, said the action was taken to assist retired workers, who served the state meritoriously, to have a good Yuletide.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the bonus, tagged Christmas Turkey Bonus, is coming days after the government paid December 2022 salary to the workers and pensions.
The government had also approved the payment of the 13th month salary, which Governor Makinde said would be paid on or before December 31. Read more
Kano PDP: I will appeal my sacking, Wali vows (DailyTrust)
The sacked Kano Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Sadiq Aminu Wali, has revealed his intention to go to the Appeal Court after a Federal high court judgement nullified his candidacy as the party’s standard bearer in the state.
Daily Trust reported that on Thursday, the Federal High Court sitting in Kano declared Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as the duly elected gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Kano.
The judgment, delivered by the Presiding Judge, Justice A.M Liman, was made virtually, where he ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expunge Wali’s name and substitute it with Abacha’s.
The court then recognized the primary election, held at Lugard House by Shehu Wada Sagagi’s faction, which produced Abacha imas against the one conducted by Wali’s side at Sani Abacha Youth Centre. Read more

Michael Stipe plans to release first solo album in 2023 (ClassicRock)
Former R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe said he was working on his first solo album and expected to release it in 2023. He put out his debut single, “Your Capricious Soul,” in 2019 and followed it with “Future if Future” earlier this year.
In a recent interview with Departures, he outlined his intent with the upcoming record, noting, “I’m collaborating with a bunch of different musicians, and each of those songs, if I get my way – which I think I will because I’m paying for it – will be very different.”
He added, “I have no management. I have no label. For the first time in my adult life, I don’t have a contract with anyone except myself. So I get to do whatever I want.” Predicting that the album “should come together next year,” he said “there will be a visual representation for each of the songs. … I’m hoping to build slowly.”
Asked if he ever considered quitting music, Stipe said, “When the band disbanded, I couldn’t imagine continuing with music, and it took five years before I could come back to the idea of it.” He returned in 2018 with a collaboration with electroclash duo Fischerspooner on their album, Sir. “I’m still blown away at how good the material was that we worked with on that record,” he said. “And it established a long-standing working relationship with myself and producer Andy LeMaster, which is really important.” Read more

NOFX may still release new music despite retirement from touring (NME)
NOFX could still record and release new music even after they retire from touring next year, according to guitarist Eric Melvin.
Melvin elaborated more on the band’s decision to quit touring in conversation with Avenged Sevenfold‘s Johnny Christ on his Drinks With Johnny podcast. He revealed that the decision was largely down to frontman and bassist Mike ‘Fat Mike’ Burkett and the stress and anxiety he faces when on the road.
“It’s sad, but it’s true. It’s Mike, really. I think I have a clue, but I’m not really sure why exactly. It’s maybe stressful, anxious for him. And he’s just like, maybe not sure that it’s working for him any more,” said Melvin.
“He’s just been talking about it for a few years. We’ve been trying to make adjustments and of course the pandemic has thrown a wrench in everything. We’ve tried to make adjustments to see if that works better for him, and it just seems like it’s not. Read more

The extreme cold weather hitting North America in the run-up to Christmas holidays is due to a phenomenon called a “bomb cyclone”.
The US National Weather Service said this “once in a generation type event” has the power to turn deadly and is already breaking cold-weather records — with temperatures falling to minus 53 degrees Celsius (minus 63 Fahrenheit) in western Canada, minus 38 in Minnesota and minus 13 in Dallas.

After an impressive tournament, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has been nominated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The 31-year-old was in solid form for the Atlas Lions as he helped them to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, the first ever achieved by an African nation in the history of the tournament.
During the tournament, Bounou won two Man of the Match awards as he became the first African goalkeeper to keep three clean sheets in the history of the World Cup.

Liverpool and Manchester City have released a joint statement condemning further crowd trouble between the two sets of fans during Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie.
Greater Manchester Police are investigating after one City fan, a 15-year-old girl, was injured when an object – allegedly a pint cup full of coins and beer – was hurled from the away end at the Etihad Stadium.
Further allegations include bottles being thrown by Liverpool fans and that a group of away supporters in the disabled section were targeted by abuse.
The trouble follows a concerted effort between the two clubs to address their fans’ issues with each other ahead of the game. Read more
