Man, 47, allegedly defiles 7-year-old girl (Punch)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that a 47-year-old man, Paul Adebayo, be remanded in a custodial centre for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the police charged Adebayo, who resides in Mende, Maryland, Lagos State, with defilement and sexual assault.

Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Adebayo’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Directorate of Public Prosecutions for advice.

She adjourned the case till February 15 for mention. Read more

Company workers arraigned over theft of N20m equipment (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned two employees of a construction company, Encon International Limited, Peter Musa, a security guard, and Friday Iniekem, an accountant, over the theft of 40 units of equipment valued at N20m.

The accountant and security guard were arraigned before Magistrate O. Y. Adufope of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on three counts of conspiracy and theft.

The police prosecutor, Magaji Haruna, told the court that each unit of the equipment weighed 15 kilogrammes and could not be stolen without anyone noticing.

The prosecutor said since the lock to the room where the equipment was kept was not broken neither was there any complaint of a break-in or robbery in the company, the theft was organised. Read more

Court remands Lagos auto dealer over wife’s death (Punch)

An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a Lagos auto dealer, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, over the death of his wife, Abimbola Martins-Ogbonna.

The court remanded Ikechukwu  following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions indicating that he should be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

While reading out the DPP advice, Magistrate Kafayat Tella stated that the defendant would be arraigned before the Lagos High Court, and should be remanded in custody pending his arraignment.

The defence lawyer, Mr Abubakar Yesufu, however, prayed the court to allow the defendant to be released based on earlier bail conditions granted him. Read more

Man arraigned for stealing 200 beer crates (Punch)

The police have arraigned a man, Simeon Godwin, 45, for allegedly stealing 200 empty crates of beer valued at N360,000.

Godwin was arraigned on Monday before Magistrate O.O. Adeosun of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ogba area of Lagos State.

The police prosecutor told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 29, 2022.

The charge read, “That you, Simeon Godwin, on January 29, 2022, around 7pm in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did steal 200 empty crates of 33 Lager Beer valued at N360,000, product of Nigeria Breweries, property of GPC Energy and Logistic Nigeria Limited, situated at 4B, Regina

Coker Street, Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287 (5B) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.” Read more

Soldiers arrest 116 suspects during operation in Lagos (Punch)

No fewer than 116 suspects were arrested on Monday when soldiers of the 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, invaded criminal hideouts in the under-bridge area of Oshodi, among other areas in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that during the raid, the soldiers searched bags and pockets of commuters.

A Twitter user, @OgoMushin, said it appeared as if a state of emergency was declared.

Another user, @Olu_Bebeji, said people plying the routes raised their hands.

Court jails bizman 18 months for N2.9b fraud (Punch)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday sentenced a businessman, Kenneth Amadi, the Chief Executive Officer of IDID Nigeria Limited, to 18 months imprisonment over N2.9bn fraud.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa handed down the sentence after finding him guilty of counts four and five of the criminal charges made against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The judge held that the sentence was without an option of a fine and equally ordered that IDID Nigeria Limited be liquidated with immediate effect.

Amadi and his company, IDID Nigeria Limited, were arraigned before the court by the government after he defrauded Eunisell of the said sum while he was the Chief Operating Officer of the company. Read more

Firm disowns worker for billing Lagos toilet users (Punch)

A worker with a private firm, Meditrack Limited, identified simply as Sulaimon, who was stationed at the restroom of the Relatives Waiting Hall of the Lagos Island General Hospital, has been caught charging users of the facility.

When our correspondent visited the hospital on Wednesday, he approached Sulaimon to direct him to the hospital’s toilet so he could relieve himself.

Sulaimon, who was putting on a green shirt, took our correspondent to the toilet at the Relatives Waiting Hall and told him he had to pay N50 after using the restroom.

After directing our correspondent to one of the vacant toilets, Sulaimon came back a few seconds later to demand the fee. Read more

Panic as Lagos hoodlums invade school, chase pupils (Punch)

No fewer than 40 hoodlums have invaded a private school, Shalom Group of Schools, Baruwa, Ipaja, Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the students and management of the school could not enter the premises as the main entrance was blocked by the land grabbers, popularly referred to as Omo-Onile.

The Proprietress of the school, Mrs Adedayo Odeka, on Monday, said the hoodlums were led by one Kaka.

Murder: Lagos policeman protests as court remands four inspectors (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday arraigned four policemen, Inspector Johnson Imeh, Inspector Effiong Edet, Inspector Harrison Ike, and Inspector Etederhi Obaseki, before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court over the alleged murder of a resident, Buraimoh Gafar.

The four inspectors were arraigned before Magistrate A.O. Salawu on two counts of murder.

The four policemen, attached to the Ajah Police Divisional Headquarters, were on a patrol and visited Amadon Estate.

Suspected hoodlums in the community were said to have fled on sighting the cops as one of them was arrested. Read more

Suspected Lagos pickpocket escapes lynching (Punch)

A suspected pickpocket on Friday escaped lynching after he was caught trying to steal a woman’s phone at Secretariat Bus Stop in the Alausa area of Lagos State.

Our correspondent, who was at the bus stop at the time of the incident, heard the woman raise the alarm after she saw the suspect pulling the phone with his hand out of her handbag.

A mob immediately descended on the suspect with sticks and fists as the pickpocket was covered in blood while he pleaded for his life.

Some officers of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and a policeman later arrived at the scene and tried to calm the situation to no avail. Read more

Fake SON’s officials bag 2,500-hour community service (Punch)

A  Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced five men who impersonated officials of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria to 2,500 hours of community service.

The court also ordered the convicts to pay N100,000 each as a special fine to the Federal Government.

The convicts, who were sentenced by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, are Joshua James, Dagunduro Taiwo, Fatade Samuel, Peter Otegbe and Azeez Wasiu.

Justice Awogboro ordered them to perform community service after they pleaded guilty to one count of forgery made against them by SON. Read more

Thugs attack Jandor’s convoy, 3 injured (Punch)

The convoy of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran aka Jandor, was attacked in the Coker area of Aguda in the Surulere Local Government Area of the state.

Some suspected hoodlums were said to have shotguns and destroyed some of the campaign vehicles in Adediran’s convoy during the attack on Friday, and three persons were injured.

Jandor, together with some party members and supporters, had a grassroots engagement with traders and other groups in the Surulere LGA shortly before the attack.

However, the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress have traded blame concerning the attack. Read more

EFCC arrests Gbajabiamila over fraud as court adjourns case (Guardian)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, arrested 63-year-old Suleiman Gbajabiamila.

Gbajabiamila was last year arraigned on a two-count charge for defrauding a United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Lateef Adeyemo, of the sum of N30 million.

According to the charge, Gbajabiamila, who presented himself as an estate agent in 2021, fraudulently collected and converted to his own use, the money meant to purchase a two-bedroom flat for Adeyemo between September and October 2021.

The suspect, said to have been at large for months, was first arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, on charges bordering on stealing and false presentation, an offence punishable under Section 287 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015. Read more

Court jailed 2 for vandalising, stealing electric cables (Guardian)

A Lagos Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two men for vandalising and stealing electric cables. The accused are: Omena Sunday, 24 years and Bashir Sheu, 28 years, were arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court 1 Mushin, sitting at Ogba Magistrate Court and Ifo Magistrate’s Court 2, Ifo Local Council in Ogun State for vandalism and stealing transformer cables at Five Star Junction Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos and Otun Olori Akute area of Ogun State.

Omena, having pleaded guilty on Count one, two and three of the four Charges, was sentenced to six months imprisonment for Count one, one year imprisonment for Count two and three of the charge accordingly, which will run concurrently for one year with hard labour without option of fine.

The Court said the sentence will serve as deterrence to others who may want to indulge in such criminal acts. While Omena is serving his jail terms on count one to three, if he is found guilty on count four, his jail term will be added to his running jail terms since count four was adjourned to January 30, 2023 for continuation of trial.
