A man, Chika Uba, has died after taking his 32-year-old girlfriend, Amaka Joseph, to watch a football match on Adeniyi Jones Avenue in the Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Uba went to pick Amaka from her residence on Ogunsolu Street, Cement area of Ikeja, and they both went to watch an English Premier League match between Chelsea and Leicester City at the Runway Bar on Adeniyi Jones Avenue.

After the match, it was learnt that Uba took Amaka back to her residence, but the story took another dimension when he got to her residence and allegedly started behaving strangely.

It was learnt that Amaka sought the assistance of her neighbour, Macaulay Justice, who helped in rushing Uba to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for urgent medical attention. Read more

Sanwo-Olu urges Lagosians to be security conscious (Nation)

Wife of Lagos State governor Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has urged Lagosians to tackle insecurity by developing a sense of community, where security is the duty of all.

She said parents, market women and community leaders must share intelligence and interrogate strange movements in the environment.

The governor’s wife admonished parents and guardians to protect their children and encourage them to speak up in the face of threats to their welfare.

To Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, insecurity is not limited to banditry or terrorism, but extends to other acts capable of upseting people at domestic level and the markets. Read more

Baron caught with N8bn cocaine in Lagos offers $24,500 bribe (Punch)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a suspect, Ejiofor Enwereaku, with 36 blocks of cocaine weighing 27.95km with a street value of over N8b.

Enwereaku was said to have been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Friday.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday titled: ‘NDLEA intercepts N8bn cocaine, arrests drug kingpin at Lagos airport’.

Babafemi described the suspect as the leader of a syndicate, which allegedly specialised in using unsuspecting travellers for trafficking cocaine to various countries. Read more

Insurance Brokers admit Sanwo-Olu as Fellow (Leadership)

Insurance brokers, under the auspices of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers(NCRIB) have admitted the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as fellow.

The admission of Sanwo-Olu as well as his Enugu State counterpart, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi into the prestigious cadre of the council as honorary fellows was in recognition of their pivotal role in the society as well as their support for professional bodies.

In the same vein, the council admitted the chairman, House Representatives committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters, Hon Nwokocha Darlington and the commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Sunday Thomas as honorary fellows.

Also admitted into the fellowship cadre of the council were thirty nine other professional members who have scaled the hurdles of clinching the highest professional cadre of the council.

Lagos motorists driving against traffic risk imprisonment, vehicle forfeiture (Punch)

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (task force) has announced that motorists caught driving against the traffic will now face up to a year in prison if convicted and their vehicles will be forfeited to the government.

The task force said this in a statement by the Head of Public Affairs, Femi Moliki, on Sunday while announcing that 10 vehicles were impounded for driving against the traffic when the Chairman of the agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, led his team on a routine enforcement of the traffic law at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road on Friday.

Jejeloye said despite the impound-and-auction policy of the state government, motorists were still driving against the traffic, adding that any driver found guilty would now face one year imprisonment and have the vehicle forfeited.

The statement read in part, “Forthwith, the task force will start prosecuting drivers of vehicles impounded for one-way (driving against traffic). Read more

Attahiru: Buhari approves Monday work-free day for armed forces (Guardian)

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the National Flag Fly at half-mast in honour of the late chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru and other officers that died in an air crash on Friday.

The President has similarly approved Monday as a work-free day for members of the Armed Forces.

A statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha noted

that President Buhari authorized that the National Flag should be flown at half-mast in all public buildings, facilities and official residences with effect from today, Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th May 2021.

Mustapha explained that the approval was to honour the memory and services of the former army boss, ten senior military and service members. Read more

A group of Igbo Youth Vanguard for Peace and Harmonious living has asked the Southern Governors of Nigeria to consider the effect their ban on open grazing will have on herders who hitherto conducted their cattle rearing peacefully in their host communities.

The group said that the ban is capable of taking tolls on innocent herdsmen who were never part of the criminality that has in the present time become associated with cattle rearing business.

Nigeria declares 90 passengers from Brazil, India, Turkey persons of interest (Guardian)

Nigeria’s Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 has declared 90 passengers who arrived in Nigeria from Brazil, India and Turkey between 8th May 2021 and 15th May 2021, through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja as persons of interest (POI), noting that they posd considerable danger to public health.

The committee said it will disable the travel passports of the affected passengers for a period not less than one year, cancel visas or permits of foreign nationals among them and may prosecute them.

The 108 passengers, which include Nigerians and foreigners, were accused of violating Nigeria’s COVID-19 travel protocol by evading the mandatory 7-day quarantine for persons arriving from restricted countries.

Official figures showed that out of 90 defaulters, 63 Nigerians, 26 Indians and one Dane. Read more

How unknown gunmen attacked INEC secretariat, police division in Anambra (Vanguard)

Unknown gunmen Sunday evening attacked B Division of the Nigeria Police Divisional Station and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa, Anambra.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the fully armed attackers came in three Hilux trucks at about 8pm on Sunday, May 23.

An eyewitness who almost ran into the troubled area located in between the popular Ekwueme Square, Awka said the bandits shot into the air close to one hour at B Police Division before proceeding to INEC office.

The source who spoke in anonymity, said before proceeding to INEC, the gunmen drove to Aroma junction and shot in the air for about 10 minutes which made residents scamper for safety before they headed down to INEC. Read more

Sasha Johnson: Black Lives Matter activist critical after shooting, her political party says (BBC)

Prominent Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson is in a critical condition after being shot, her political party says.

Taking the Initiative Party said she was being treated in intensive care after being shot in the head in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The BBC understands the incident happened in south London.

5 Israelis among 14 killed in Italian cable car accident (Guardian)

Fourteen people died including five Israelis on Sunday when a cable car slammed into the side of a mountain in northern Italy, emergency services said.

An Israeli couple living in Italy died along with one child, while their five-year-old was fighting for his life with brain trauma and broken legs, according to the Alpine rescue service.

A nine-year-old Italian child was also among the dead, it said, adding that the toll could rise further from the accident in Stresa, a resort town on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy’s Piedmont region, it said. Read more

170 children in DRC feared missing after volcanic eruption – UNICEF (Vanguard)

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Sunday that hundreds of children and families in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) district of Goma were at risk after the Mount Nyiragongo volcanic eruption.

The sky turned red and lava spewed from the volcano on Saturday, causing thousands to flee the city of two million people, located just to the south.

UNICEF, in a statement said that more than 150 children had been separated from their families and more than 170 were feared missing.

News reports indicate that up to five people may have died during the evacuation, and some houses have reportedly been lost in the north of Goma. Read more

Osakpolor Solomon earns call up to Ireland U19 team (Vanguard)

Nigerian-eligible Irish-born teenage soccer star, Osakpolor Solomon, has been named in Ireland Under-19 squad for a seven days training camp set to hold in England.

Osakpolor Solomon, who stars in defence for Nottingham Forest in the Championship, was included in the 35-man Irish team by Manager Tom Mohan, who also named Stephen Ireland’s son Joshua in the hit squad

Mohan decided to invite a large squad that includes a goalkeeping training camp under Rene Gilmartin to have up close and personal look of the players who are coming for the training camp..Mohan is also keen to get a look at younger players ahead of the restart of action in autumn.

Nigeria’s  2020 Tokyo Olympics Games build-up received a major boost after Delta State Governor Dr Ifeanyi Okowa adopted seven  athletes to support their preparations.

NFF mourns Supersand Eagles’ Coach, Audu Adamu ‘Ejo’ (Guardian)

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday announced the demise of Head Coach of the Beach Soccer National Team (Supersand Eagles), Audu Adamu, who died on Saturday.

‘Ejo’, who has led the Supersand Eagles to several FIFA World Cup and Beach Soccer AFCON campaigns, lost the battle against diabetes on Saturday evening, the federation said.

“It is very painful for us at the NFF. Coach Adamu was a very dedicated head of the technical crew of our Beach Soccer Team. He won several laurels with the team and was a highly disciplined and dedicated individual.

“The NFF never had any serious issues with him all through the years he spent with the Supersand Eagles. He did his job quietly and never courted undue limelight. He was very hard working, energetic and committed to beach soccer, and was simple, humble and humane. Nigerian Football will miss him. Read more
