Man dies while jogging in Lagos (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified man collapsed and died while jogging on Sunday morning on the WEMCO Road, in the Ogba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the man collapsed due to suspected cardiac arrest and efforts by the people around, who rushed to his rescue, proved abortive as he died on the spot.

In the footage of the incident made available to our correspondent by an eyewitness, the lifeless body of the man, who wore a Chelsea jersey and a white pair of trainers, was seen lying on the pavement as rain fell on it. Read more

Man sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for stealing car (Vanguard)

Justice Adedayo Akintoye of a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere, has sentenced a man, Oluwaseun Adeniyi to four years’ imprisonment for stealing a car.

Adeniyi had entered into a plea bargain agreement and pleaded guilty to a count amended charge of stealing preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

Justice Akintoye, who handed down the verdict, found him guilty as charged and ordered that the sentence should take effect from the day the convict was remanded in prison. Read more

Rivers, Cross River willing to pay new minimum wage (Punch)

Rivers and Cross River States have expressed their willingness to pay the new minimum wage.

According to the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mrs Beatrice Itubu, the state government would not have any issue paying the consequential adjustments approved by the Federal Government.

Itubu recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike had promised that he would pay whatever amount that was agreed between the Federal Government and labour. Read more

Nigerian-Ghanaian couple fight Canada deportation order (Vanguard)

A Nigerian man, Temitope Issac Kayode is currently facing a deportation threat in Canada and might be deported tomorrow (October 22).

Kayode fled Nigeria in 2016 to Canada as a refugee and got married to a Canadian woman last year (July, 2018).

He was reported by CTV News Calgary to have applied for a permanent residency which has not yet been granted. The couple is hoping the Canadian government could give them additional time to ensure the finalisation of the application.

Unknown to the couple who thought they were going for an interview when invited by the Immigration Officials, Kayode was cuffed and taken into custody. Read more

Ex-Police boss swaps innocent person for drug suspect after taking bribe (Punch)

The former head of the Philippine Police, Gen. Oscar Albayalde, has been named in a criminal complaint by his own Force over drugs raid that he oversaw six years ago.

Albayalde was the chief enforcer of President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘bloody’ campaign against drugs.

He was accused of violating drugs laws, bribery and falsification of documents, perjury and dereliction of duty in the complaint by investigators at the Philippine National Police. Read more

EU data watchdog raises concerns over Microsoft contracts (NYPost)

Microsoft’s contracts with European Union institutions do not fully protect data in line with EU law, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) said in initial findings published on Monday.

The EDPS, the EU’s data watchdog, opened an investigation in April to assess whether contracts between Microsoft and EU institutions such as the European Commission fully complied with the bloc’s data protection rules.

“Though the investigation is still ongoing, preliminary results reveal serious concerns over compliance of the relevant contractual terms with data protection rules and the role of Microsoft as a processor for EU institutions using its products and services,” the EDPS says in a statement. The number of people killed in violent protests against rising living costs in Chile has risen to 11, Santiago Governor Karla Rubilar said on Monday.

At least five of those killed died after looters torched a garment factory near the capital.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appeared in a London court on Monday for a hearing on whether he should be extradited to the United States to face spying charges.

Assange, dressed in a navy suit and light blue jumper, raised his fist to supporters in the public gallery. He was cleanly shaven in contrast to the long beard he had grown while holed up in Ecuador’s embassy.

Assange, 48, faces 18 counts in the U.S. including conspiring to hack government computers and violating an espionage law. He could spend decades in prison if convicted. Read more

Prince William ‘worried’ about Harry after ITV interview (BBC)

Prince William is concerned for his brother Harry and his wife Meghan after the couple said they were struggling, a Palace source has told the BBC.

The Duke of Cambridge is said to be “worried” about Prince Harry and hopes he and Meghan “are alright” following the admission in an ITV documentary.

The Palace source added that there was a view the couple were “in a fragile place”.

Battle of Midway: World War Two Japanese carrier wrecks found (BBC)

Deep sea explorers have found two Japanese aircraft carriers that were sunk in battle in World War Two.

The carriers were among seven ships that went down in the Battle of Midway, a major air and sea battle fought between the US and Japan in 1942.

One ship, the Kaga, was discovered last week, while wreckage from another carrier, Akagi, was found on Sunday.

Until now only one other ship sunk in this battle had ever been found – the American vessel USS Yorktown, in 1998. Read more

London police arrest 2 men over racial abuse during football match (Vanguard)

Two men were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault at Saturday’s FA Cup qualifying match between Haringey Borough and Yeovil Town in North London, the capital’s Metropolitan Police said.

The men, aged 23 and 26, were arrested on Monday in Chard and Yeovil, in South-Western English county of Somerset, following an investigation into reports of racist comments made during the match, police said.

The contest was abandoned after 64 minutes of play amid reports of racial abuse against Haringey’s players including Cameroonian goalkeeper, Valery Douglas Pajetat. Read more
