Man gets life jail for defiling daughter (Nation)

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court yesterday sentenced Kayode Abegunde to life imprisonment for defiling his daughter.

The prosecutor counsel, Olushola Sholeye, had filed a three-count charge – defilement, sexual assault by penetration and child labour –  contrary to sections 137, 261 and 2017 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

During the trial, the prosecution called three witnesses, including a social volunteer, Ambibola Ojoshoke, from a non-governmental organisation, Chamary Foundation, a police officer attached to Dopemu Police Station and the survivor who confirmed to the court that the defendant was her father. Court admits Mompha’s iPhone as exhibit in money laundering trial (Punch)

The Ikeja Special Offences Court, on Tuesday, admitted further evidence in the ongoing trial of Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha.

Mompha is facing trial over alleged N6bn money laundering before Justice Mojisola Dada.

He is being tried, alongside his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited, on eight counts bordering on conspiracy, retention of proceeds of crime, failure to disclose assets and properties, possession of documents containing false pretences, the use of properties derived from unlawful acts, and laundering of N6bn, preferred against him, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Customs hand over three suspects, 788kg cannabis to NDLEA (Punch)

The Western Marine Command in Lagos, on Tuesday, handed over three suspects and 1,658 loaves of canabis sativa, weighing 788kg, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The Customs Area Controller, Western Marine Command, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, who briefed newsmen on the command’s activities, handed the narcotics and suspects over to the new NDLEA Commander, Western Marine Command, Mr Udoh Morrison.

Bamisaiye said that he was pleased to hand over the arrested suspects and a total of 1,658 loaves of Cannabis Sativa intercepted during three separate operations.

Family demands probe of arson on four relatives (Punch)

The family of Kehinde Oduse has called on the police and other relevant authorities to probe the attack on their son, his wife and children by suspected arsonists at the Ita Marun community in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro reports that the family of four was set ablaze in their home in the early hours of Tuesday, as the wife, 22-year-old Eniola and two children four-year-old Eri and two-year-old Onoara were burnt to death in the process.

Kehinde, 25, who was also caught up in the fire, was reported to be currently battling for his life. Read more

Complainant rejects plea bargain for Lagos murder suspects (Punch)

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, in Ijede Local Council Development Area, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Oluwatosin Onamade, has rejected the plea bargain approved by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), for five murder suspects.

Onamade, who is the complainant in the case, on Monday, expressed his opposition during the hearing before Justice Hakeem Oshodi at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.

The defendants, in the case are Atunrase Sodiq Omolabi (28), Shittu Michael Olawale (28), Olaide Opeifa (40), Olanrewaju Adebiyi aka Maja (35), and Jamiu Omosanya aka Orobo. Read more

Brazil-based bizman arrested for alleged 700g cocaine smuggling (Punch)

A 59-year-old Nigerian businessman, Sylva Ezeokoli, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly smuggling 700 grams of cocaine concealed in his stomach.

The arrest was made on Friday at the E-Arrival hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

Ezeokoli, who had spent 35 years in Brazil, was returning home aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight from São Paulo via Addis Ababa. Read more

Mother, 2 children killed as arsonists set family ablaze in Lagos (Punch)

A 22-year-old fashion designer, Eniola Oduse and her two children, four-year-old Eri and two-year-old Onoara, have been burnt to death after suspected arsonists set their home ablaze at the Ita Marun community in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State.

The deceased’s husband, Kehinde, 25, who was also caught up in the fire, is currently battling for his life in an undisclosed hospital.

Lagos police rape: Victim’s mother decries silence, stalled justice (Punch)

Mrs Aramide Olupona, the mother of a 17-year-old girl (name withheld) whom an Assistant Superintendent of Police allegedly raped, has accused the police of deliberately stalling the case to enable the suspect to retire in December.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 29 at Ogudu Police Station, in Ojota, Lagos. An ASP, identified as Owolabi Akinlolu, allegedly summoned the 17-year-old secondary school student to the station, claiming they had apprehended the suspect who had stolen her phone two weeks prior.

But the teenager told City Round that when she showed up at the police station, the senior officer reportedly invited her into his office, locked the door, and raped her. Read more

One of the four suspected traffic robbers, Ismail Akinlade, arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit also known as the Lagos Task Force has disclosed that he spent the proceeds from their crime on drugs and gambling.

Akinlade, who was arrested alongside the trio of Rasak Abiodun, Adefabi Gbolahan, and Rilwan Olaloye, narrated this to the task force operatives during an interrogation session.

Man jailed 4 months for vandalism (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified man has been sentenced to four months for vandalising public infrastructure in Lagos.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained on Wednesday that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps popularly known as KAI, apprehended the man on Jibowu Bridge “for attempting to sabotage public infrastructure by removing screws and nuts holding the bridge.”

“He was promptly arraigned at the Oshodi Magistrate Court and sentenced to four months imprisonment,” Wahab explained in a post on X. Read more

Ex-convict steals Lagos residence’s iron gate, lands in police net (Tribune)

THE police in Lagos State arrested two suspects, including an ex-convict, Samuel Agbaje, on Tuesday for stealing the gate of a residential building located at the Adeniyi Jones area of the city.

Agbaje, who was reportedly released from prison about a month ago, and his accomplice had invaded the residence with his accomplice, one Moses, and removed a part of the building’s gate.

They were on their way to a location where they intended to sell the stolen gate when they were intercepted by operatives from the Rapid Response Squad who were on a routine patrol.Read more
