Lagos bizman granted N30m bail over alleged N10m fraud (Punch)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday granted N30m bail to a businessman, Lanre Smith, accused of N10m fraud.

Justice Ibrahim Kala granted the bail following a motion filed and argued by the defendant’s lawyer, Akin Apara.

Apara who pleaded with the court to admit the defendant to bail on liberal terms stated that Smith was still presumed innocent until otherwise proved. Read more

Labourer jailed 10 years for robbery in Lagos (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday sentenced a 30-year-old labourer, Samson Saliu, who specialised in robbing people in the early hours of the morning and at night at the Ijora Badia Bridge, to 10 years imprisonment for armed robbery.

Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay sentenced Saliu after a plea bargain agreement and changed his plea from not guilty to a guilty plea.

The defendant was first arraigned on July 21, 2021, on six counts of conspiracy, and armed robbery preferred against him by the state government. Read more

Guardian seeks help over 21-year-old lady’s abduction (Punch)

A guardian, Kikelomo Anthony, has cried out over the abduction of her 21-year-old ward, Sarah Alaba, who was abducted by unknown men in Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Anthony told PUNCH Metro that her ward was abducted last week Monday, when she went to hawk her wares in the afternoon, on the streets of FESTAC Town, which was the last time she was seen.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim hawked boiled eggs and fried ponmo, a side job that she did apart from the vocational skill training she was undergoing.

Police nab 2 for conveying 70 cartons of expired drugs (Punch)

Operatives from the Okokomaiko Divisional Police headquarters, on Saturday, arrested two men after intercepting a Volkswagen LT bus at the Afromedia area alleged to be conveying some cartons of expired drugs.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 70 cartons of Feed Fine Cyproheptadine Caplets 4g, all with 2016 as the expiry date, were found inside the bus.

This was confirmed in a statement made on X formerly Twitter by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his X page on Sunday. Read more

NDLEA nabs driver, seizes Ghanaian Loud linked to baron (Punch)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a driver and intercepted large consignments of Ghanaian Loud smuggled into Lagos in two trucks and a J5 bus with a total weight of 14, 524.8 kilogrammes.

The NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

He noted that the three vehicles conveying jumbo bags of the psychoactive substance were trailed and intercepted at the Ojuelegba area of Lagos in the early hours of Sunday, January 28. Read more

Lovers died during fight in Lagos –Police (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that a man, Adebayo Adeseko and his girlfriend, Sarah Adesanya, died after fighting in their apartment.

It was a surprise for residents of Ojodu, Ikeja, Lagos State, when the information spread that the lady and the man died after the “bloody” fight.

Man jailed 4 years for smuggling 1.8kg of cannabis (Punch)

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old man, Olorunfunmi Olakunle, to four years imprisonment, for smuggling cannabis sativa weighing 1.80 kilograms, into Nigeria from the United States of America.

Justice Ibrahim Kala handed down the jail term after the convict pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and unlawful importation of the banned weed.

Earlier before the sentence of the convict, the prosecutor, Mr. Augustine Nwagu, had told the court that Olakunle was arrested with the cannabis sativa, which was concealed in boxing kits. Read more

10 hospitalised as police, cult groups clash in Lagos schools (Punch)

There was pandemonium on Wednesday, January 31, after a fight broke out among some cult groups said to be students of Community Senior Grammar School and Ikotun High School at Ikotun in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened as a result of a long-time rivalry between two groups in the schools.

The fight which started during the closing hour was said to have caused some policemen nearby to intervene to restore calm. Read more

Police arrest man with fake currency in Lagos (Punch)

A 47-year-old man has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for being in possession of fake naira notes.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the arrest on Friday, said that the suspect, simply identified as Shola, was arrested on January 17, 2024, at about 6:30 pm, at Apapa Under Bridge, Lagos, after purchasing N7,000 worth of goods at Oba Abdulfatai Aromire Ojora market, Ijora, with fake naira notes.

Hundeyin said that the suspect was handed over to policemen from Ijora Badia Police Division where an additional fake N6,000 was recovered from him. Read more

14-year-old rape victim contracts HIV, culprit bags life jail (Punch)

A 14-year-old rape victim (name withheld) has contracted the Human Immunodeficiency Virus after she was defiled by a man, identified as Richard Saviour.

According to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, the culprit was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, for defiling the victim, who is a niece to his wife.

The judgment was delivered by Justice Oyindamola Ogala on Tuesday. Read more

Suspected vandals kill NSCDC official in Lagos (Punch)

Gunmen suspected to be vandals have killed an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps identified simply as Agama at Idimu in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Man bags life jail for defilement of 2 minors (Punch)

The Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, on Tuesday, convicted a man, Ndedigwe Paul, to double life imprisonment for sexual assault of minors, following a comprehensive trial that sought justice for the victims.

The convict was handed down the sentence by Justice Abiola Soladoye on January 30, 2024, who, after a careful consideration of the evidence presented, found the defendant guilty on two out of the three-count charges of defilement and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor contravening Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

According to a report, Ndedigwe lured the victims who were in kindergarten class and ages six and seven respectively at that time into his room and had unlawful sexual intercourse with them. PUNCH Metro gathered that he engaged in the indecent act by inserting his finger in the victims’ private parts, and having carnal knowledge of the victims individually while the other watched. Lagos task force nabs 51 area boys over alleged extortion (Guardian)

Lagos State Task Force, Tuesday, arrested 51 street urchins, popularly called ‘area boys’, for harassing and extorting truck drivers along the Apapa/Oshodi expressway.

The Guardian learnt that the operation was led by the task force’s chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye. Confirming the arrest, spokesperson for the agency, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, said the suspects have been arraigned before a mobile court within the premises of the agency for extortion and public nuisance.

According to him, these individuals have been identified for their brazen tactics; coercing truck drivers to part with money under the pretext of working for the defunct Lagos State Parks and Garages Agency. Read more
