Man jailed 12 years for girlfriend’s death (Punch)

Justice Adedayo Akintoye of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere, on Wednesday, sentenced 46-year-old Tunde Omisakin to 12 years imprisonment for causing the death of his girlfriend, Tina Toroso.

Omisakin was arraigned on one count of manslaughter on February 16, 2016, which he pleaded not guilty to and the prosecution called four witnesses to testify against him.

Omisakin, on December 8, 2008, around 2am in his place of residence at Lamgbasa in the Ajah area of the state, had used a cutlass to cut the right hand of Toroso, which severed her veins and resulted in her death. Read more

Driver in court for allegedly stealing employer’s 104 cartons of beer (Vanguard)

A 30-year-old man, Olayinka Ajao, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing employer’s 104 carton of beer valued at N500, 240. The defendant, a company driver, whose address was not given, is being tried for conspiracy, stealing and presentation of fake driver’s licence. The prosecutor, Sgt. Chekube Okeh told the court that the offences were committed on May 23, at 23 Alani Doherty St., Ikeja, inside Guinness Warehouse. Read more

Monkeypox hits Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom (Guardian)

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) yesterday confirmed five news cases of Monkeypox in Lagos, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

The resurgence comes two years after the index case was reported in the country. While Lagos, in the current reappearance, recorded three cases, Rivers and Akwa Ibom have one each.

According to the latest situation report on monkeypox and Lassa fever published by the NCDC yesterday, “In the reporting month (September 2019), 15 new suspected monkeypox cases were reported from five states – Lagos (five), Rivers (two), Akwa Ibom (three), Zamfara (one), Delta (one), Imo (two) and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT (one). Road closure at Yaba level crossing postponed —LASTMA (Punch)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has said that the planned road closure at Yaba level crossing had been postponed.

The LASTMA’s spokesman, Mr Olumide Filade made this known in a Public Notice made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Wednesday night.

The authority in a travel advisory had earlier on Wednesday announced the road closure at the railway level crossing in Yaba following the ongoing construction of Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line.

According to the travel advisory earlier made available, the level crossing will be closed from 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday to 1: 00 a.m on Thursday. Red more

As the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) commence the defence of their 2020 budget, the various committees of the Senate Thursday barred the media from covering the proceedings.

Police are looking for help to identify a man who fell out of a plane from Kenya into a garden in London.

Officers were called to an address in Offerton Road, Clapham, in June, where the body of the man, believed to be in his 30s, was found.

He is thought to have fallen from the landing gear compartment of the aircraft headed for Heathrow Airport.

In what has already been dubbed India’s first official case of the so-called ‘Lazarus effect,’ a 45-year-old woman was declared dead twice by two different city hospitals hours apart in a truly bizarre, if tragic case.

The woman suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an inflammatory lung condition that severely impacts airflow. She was admitted to hospital for treatment, but was reportedly declared dead at the Government Multispeciality Hospital 16 in Chandigarh, and certified as medically deceased. Read more

Japan imports Ebola in preparation for Olympic games (RT)

The Japanese government has imported strains of Ebola and four other lethal pathogens to research possible countermeasures should an outbreak occur with the vast influx of athletes and tourists at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Four Bulgaria fans arrested for subjecting England players to racist abuse have been fined 1,000 Bulgarian lev (£443) and banned from sports events for two years.

England’s 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win in Sofia on Monday was stopped twice in the first half following racist chanting by home supporters.

AC Milan suffer record 146 million euro losses – reports (Guardian)

Troubled former Italian footballing giants AC Milan have suffered record losses, according to reports in Italy on Wednesday.

Gazzetta Dello Sport claimed that in the year to June 30, 2019, losses rose by 16 per cent to 146 million ($162 million) euros compared to 126 million euros for the same period the previous year.

Gazzetta said the figures were far worse than the predicted loss of 90 million euros. Read more

NFF moving into online match reporting system, Kalli says (Vanguard)

Babagana Kalli, an Executive Committee member of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), says the federation is gradually working towards moving into the online match reporting system in accordance with global best practices.

Kalli said both the NFF and League Management Company (LMC) were working along with the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in this regard. “Our online reporting system is our new innovation, and we are working accordingly with FIFA and CAF on this,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
