Man bags life jail for defiling 11-year-old thrice (Punch)

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a man, Ojo Oladeji, to life imprisonment for defiling an 11-year-old minor three times, in an uncompleted building.

The judge held that the prosecution was able to prove the charge of defilement beyond reasonable doubt against Ojo.

Oshodi said that the confessional statement of the convict, the medical report and the direct evidence from the survivor showed that he committed the offence.

Lagos police arraign truck driver for stealing N3m flour (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Mukailu Mohammed before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope of the Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly conspiring to commit a felony and stealing.

The defendant was arraigned on two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony and stealing bags of flour worth N3.6m from Golden Penny Flour Mill, Apapa, Lagos.

It was gathered that an investigation was initiated on a report filed by the complainant on August 9, 2023. Read more

Man jailed 21 years for attempted rape of minor (Punch)

A 33-year-old man, Chidi Isaiah, was, on Tuesday, sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for attempting to sexually assault his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter.

The judgment was handed down by Justice Abiola Sholadoye after the convict was re-arraigned on an amended charge.

The convict was first arraigned on February 15, 2021, on the charge of defilement, to which he pleaded not guilty. Read more

Lagos bizman accuses police of aiding land grabbers (Punch)

A Lagos-based businessman, Frank Okafor, has accused some police officers of aiding suspected landgrabbers to encroach on his property located in the Ikate area of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state.

This comes as Okafor alleged that the police harassed and unlawfully arrested personnel working on the property and stole building materials.

Okafor, who spoke with PUNCH Metro through his legal representative, Omotayo Adepeju, in a telephone conversation on Tuesday, noted that despite the intervention of the Lagos Commissioner of Police and a court injunction barring the suspected landgrabbers from the property, a police team took over the property and cordoned off the area, thereby restricting technicians working on the site from carrying out their duties. Middleman bags 11-year jail term for N48.5m theft (Punch)

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court sitting at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island, on Monday, convicted and sentenced an agent, Okwudili Ezeobi, to 11 years imprisonment for swindling a businessman of the sum of N48,580,000 under false pretense of helping him purchase phones from Dubai.

Magistrate Azeez Alogba ordered the convict to pay the complainant the full amount of N48,580,000 back on or before May 22, 2024, or serve the 11-year jail term.

Ezeobi was arraigned on June 20, 2022, on two counts of obtaining false pretence and stealing preferred against him by the police. Read more

Police arraign fake soldier in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Umaru Abdul before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly conspiring to commit impersonation and unlawfully wearing a military uniform.

The defendant was arraigned on three counts of conspiracy to impersonate, forgery of an official identification card, and impersonation by pretending to be military personnel.

It was gathered that on January 11, 2024, Abdul pretended to be a member of the Nigerian Army. He unlawfully wore a Nigerian Army camouflage uniform and was found with an identity card bearing the distinctive insignia of the Nigerian Army. The ID card had the name tag “Abdul Umar” with the corporal rank. 

He was arrested by the police in the Ijegun area of Lagos State and was arraigned at Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Read more

Lagos court sentences robber to 38 years jail term (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court on Monday convicted and sentenced an armed robber, Adamu Francis, to 38 years imprisonment for robbing a lady, Ajoke Illiasu.

The robber took possession of the victim’s necklace, wristwatch, bank ATM cards, cash sum of N50,000, and stripped her naked while armed with a gun and iron rod.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala, who handed down the verdict, found Francis guilty of three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery, and assault preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

The convict, who was arraigned on charge No ID/13695c/2020, was sentenced to Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre, where he would serve his term. Read more

Driver arraigned for allegedly killing 3 (Punch)

A driver identified as Akeem Adeniyi, who allegedly drove recklessly and reportedly caused the death of three people, was on Monday arraigned before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

Adeniyi is facing four counts bordering on manslaughter, reckless/dangerous driving, and causing of death preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

It was gathered that on March 8, 2024, Adebule Adejoke, the Chief Security Officer of Yaba College of Technology, reported Ogbonna and others now at large for assaulting one Emmanuel Elebeonu by hitting him with a stick on his head and also damaging his Tecno Pop 4 smartphone valued at N41,000. Lagos police arrest 2 traffic robbers disguising as beggars (Punch)

Two notorious traffic robbers, identified as Olumide Oladiji and Lekan Ibrahim, have been arrested in the Agungi Lekki area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learned that the incident occurred on March 15 at about 7.30pm.

A police source told our correspondent that the suspected robbers posed as beggars on the expressway to steal from motorists plying the road. 

The source added that the culprits forcibly retrieved the victim’s phone and gold necklace, adding that the victim alerted the patrol personnel of the Ilasan division stationed at the Jakande roundabout, leading to their arrest. Read more

PoS operator foils customer’s attempt to make N90k transaction with fake notes (Punch)

A Point-of-Sale operator on Friday thwarted an attempt by a customer, Linda Ihebinike, to make a transaction with fake naira notes to the tune of N90,000 in Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this on his X handle on Sunday.

According to Hundeyin, the PoS operator raised the alarm after Ihebinike attempted to use fake N1,000 notes to make a purchase totaling N90,000. Read more

Crane operator arrested after cable drum kills man in Lagos (Punch)

A crane operator is undergoing an investigation in police custody after a passerby was killed after an electric cable drum fell on him on Ojo-Igbede Road in the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State on Thursday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated in a post on his X handle on Sunday that the crane operator will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for “reckless and negligent act; and involuntary manslaughter.”

He wrote, “The operator of this crane will likely spend life in prison. He did not put any warning or danger sign around the crane as he worked. Neither did he station anyone to ward off passersby. Read more

Police arrest 2 for defiling minors in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two suspects, Augustine Udeh and Adepoju Moses, for allegedly raping two teenagers in different parts of the state.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

Adejobi noted that Udeh was arrested in the Surulere area of the state following a complaint by one Nene Badmus, who told the police that her daughter disclosed that Udeh allegedly raped her after that she had found her daughter by the roadside crying. Read more

Tincan Customs seize ammunition, hard drugs (Punch)

The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Chapter, on Friday, said it seized a total of 11 rifles and six pump action guns from January to date.

The Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Dera Nnadi, who disclosed this while addressing journalists, said that the seizures were a product of collaboration with sister agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

“These were all seized from some containers. On the whole, the total number of rifles were 11 and pistols six,” he said. Read more

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a man, Nurudeen Nasiru, to life imprisonment for introducing his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter to pornography and sexually assaulting her.

During the trial, the State Counsel, Mr Olusola Soneye, called three witnesses, a social worker, the survivor, and her father while the convict testified as a sole witness.

An Ikeja High Court heard yesterday how a witness, Mohammed Buhari, dropped money for kidnappers at Ojuelegba, Lagos State.

Buhari gave evidence yesterday before Justice Adenike Coker at the ongoing trial of three suspects – Lima Auwal, Abdullah Usman and Seidu Abbas – alleged to have kidnapped a nine-year-old boy.

The trio allegedly kidnapped the boy on Ajayi Street, Idi-Araba, on November 4, 2022. They were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to kidnap and kidnapping. Read more

Police rescue 5 more children from suspected human trafficker (Nation)

The Lagos State Police Command said it has rescued five more children from a suspected human trafficking syndicate operating in Kwara State but arrested in Lagos State.
