A tenant, Adekunle Adeyemi, has gone into hiding after allegedly stabbing a co-tenant, Stanley Dickson, to death in the Grammar School area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Stanley accused Adekunle of having an illicit affair with the wife of another neighbour, Arinze Onuoha, who confronted him with the accusation.

During the confrontation, it was learnt that an argument ensued between Adekunle and Arinze, but Stanley, who informed Arinze of the alleged affair with his wife, Chisom, was not at home.

Adekunle was said to have threatened to confront Stanley with the accusation on his return from work in the evening.

A resident of the area, Ibidunni Adegoke, said during a visit to the area on Sunday that when both Adekunle and Stanley returned from work in the evening, they had a confrontation, which degenerated into a fight, adding that when the fight broke out, Adekunle allegedly stabbed Stanley to death. Rotary Club plants 150 trees in Lagos community (Guardian)

As part of efforts to set up a healthier environment, the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, District 9110, in conjunction with Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), has planted 150 trees at Adewumi Adebimpe Drive, Lekki Phase 1.

Speaking at the event, the president of the club, Chima Aja-Chima, said tree planting would be of great benefit to the environs and generations to come.

“We have enumerated tree planting to be a means to put things in line with the climate change concerns and keep the environment green, to give out oxygen, working in collaboration with Lagos State and the vision and mission of Rotary International.

“Whenever we see the flood that happens in Lagos, there seem to be a good awareness that something has to be done. LASPARK is addressing it and as a club, we are collaborating with them in line with our vision.” Read more

Police assault Lagos community leader with axe (Punch)

A community leader, Alaba Peters, has accused men of the Lagos State Police Command of attacking him with an axe for intervening in a dispute.

The victim, who claimed to have been hospitalised after the incident, urged the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to bring the culprits to justice.

PUNCH Metro learnt that some policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Gbagada, had stormed the Odogunyan area of the state around 4.30pm on August 10, 2020, and arrested some tricycle operators’ union workers.

The community leader was said to have intervened and asked the cops the reason for the arrest, which did not go down with them. Read more

The Lagos Traffic Information System (LATIS), which provides real-time traffic information, has been expanded.

LATIS is a state-of-the-art solution specially developed and designed by JCDecaux Grace Lake, the Nigerian subsidiary of JCDecaux.

It delivers a solution that gives citizens real-time information on traffic, through digital traffic arches at key junctions across Lagos.

Country Manager, Nigeria, Mr. Dele Odugbemi, said within two years, LATIS has helped ease traffic flow in the city by suggesting alternative routes and estimating times of arrival for travellers. Read more

Fire torches Lagos monarch’s palace (Punch)

Fire, on Sunday, gutted part of the palace of the monarch of Isheri-Olofin, Oba Wahab Balogun, in the Isheri roundabout area of Idimu, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the fire, which razed one of the rooms in an eight-bedroom bungalow on the premises of the palace, was reportedly caused by power surge.

It was learnt that the surge occurred when power supply was restored in the community.

When emergency responders, including officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and residents of the area, stormed the palace to quell the fire, a yet-to-be-identified adult male got choked. Read more

JAMB lifts suspension on printing admission letters, others (ThisDay)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has lifted the suspension on the printing of admission letters, and inter-university transfers among others.

It said with the development, “all requests for printing of admission letters, inter-university transfers, condonement of illegitimate admissions and other processes for previous years which had been hitherto suspended would now be restored from Monday, August 31 2020.”

Two people feared killed, scores injured as Shi’ites, police clash in Kaduna (ThisDay)

Two members of the Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky- led Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shi’ites, were reportedly killed during a clash with Police in Kaduna yesterday.

It was learnt that gunshots rented the air around the popular Ahmadu Bello Way as police made efforts to disperse the protesting IMN members.

The sect members were out in protest to press demand for release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, who have been in detention since December, 2015 after a bloody clash with soldiers in Zaria. Read more

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has written a long and loving tribute to the film’s star Chadwick Boseman, who has died aged 43.

“Chad was an anomaly. He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying,” wrote the director on Sunday morning.

“The ancestors spoke through him,” he added. “What an incredible mark he’s left for us.”

Boseman died on Thursday at home in Los Angeles with his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, and family by his side.

He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer four years ago, undergoing treatment while filming hit movies like Avengers: Endgame, 21 Bridges and Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. Read more

Danai Gurira is honoring her late friend and Black Panther costar Chadwick Boseman for his real-life heroism and inspiration.

Coronavirus: India surpasses US for highest single-day rise in Covid-19 cases (BBC)

India has set a record for the world’s highest single-day increase in coronavirus cases.

The nation, the world’s third-most infected, on Sunday reported 78,761 new cases in 24 hours, passing the number posted in the US on 17 July.

Norway bunker partygoers poisoned with carbon monoxide (BBC)

More than 20 people have been taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning after attending a rave in an underground bunker in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Police say the party was discovered by chance when a patrol came across a group of young people acting confused early on Sunday.

Several more then emerged from a bunker and asked for an ambulance.

Akpeyi stretchered off in Kaizer Chiefs defeat (Punch)

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi was stretchered off after he was involved in a nasty collision in Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 loss at Bidvest Wits in an ABSA Premier League clash on Sunday, The PUNCH reports.

The incident happened two minutes before half-time, when Akpeyi tried to deal with a cross from the left but collided with an onrushing Bidvest player.

Akpeyi received medical attention for over eight minutes on the pitch before he was taken off for Bruce Bvuma.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton dominated the Belgian Grand Prix to take his fifth victory in seven races this year and the 89th of his career.

The victory puts Hamilton 47 points – almost two clear wins – ahead of Verstappen in the championship.

The Briton is two victories away from Michael Schumacher’s all-time record and set to equal his seven titles.

Oyarzabal withdraws from Spain squad after COVID-19 diagnosis (Vanguard)

Real Sociedad winger Mikel Oyarzabal has withdrawn from the Spain squad after testing positive for coronavirus.
