Man ‘kills’ wife, self in Lagos (Nation)

The police in Lagos have commenced investigation into the alleged murder of a woman by her husband, Femi, who also allegedly killed himself.

The incident occurred at their Victory Park Estate, Lekki residence where the couple and their young children moved into about three weeks ago.

It was gathered that the man allegedly bound his wife, sealed her mouth, shaved her hair and stabbed multiple times with different knives on the head and eyes.

He thereafter, ingested poisonous substances suspected to be pesticides.

Confirming the incident to The Nation, police spokesman Bala Elkana said homicide detectives have sealed up the place. Read more

Ikeja Electric issues metres to over 120,000 households (ThisDay)

Ikeja Electric Plc (IE) has issued metres to over 120,000 households between 2018 and June 2020, adding that this is in line with its commitment to bridge its metering gap.

In a statement by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue, it disclosed that in order to achieve the mandate of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to bridge the metering gap and reduce the incidence of estimated bills, it has doubled its efforts to realize its objective of issuing meters to all its customers in the shortest possible time.

“The company plans to meter another 400,000 customers over the next two years. Apart from eradicating estimated billing, Ikeja Electric’s metering programme has also provided jobs, directly and indirectly, for thousands of Lagosians and Nigerians in general, particularly during the lockdown,” he said in the statement.. FMC Ebute Meta begins COVID-19 digital screening (Guardian)

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Meta, in partnership with PharmAccess Foundation and Luscii, has launched a COVID-19 digital screening that will help in the fight against the pandemic in Nigeria.

The digital service, Luscii, screens for symptoms of the deadly virus and connects users to dedicated medical responders for advice on how to manage their care, while it also triggers users to conduct daily checks and monitor the symptoms based on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines via the digital service platform.

The Country Director, PharmAccess Foundation, Njide Ndili, said the COVID-19 Connect digital service would help users to self-monitor and connect those who fall within the high-risk category to trained medical responders at FMC Ebute Meta for counseling and admission into Lagos COVID-19 response system. LASU emerges national partner to FAO, wins $95,000 grant (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State University (LASU) has been selected by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) as its National Partner Institute (NPI) in implementing the FISH4ACP Project (Support for the Development of Farmed Catfish Value Chain in Nigeria), winning a partial grant of up to $95,000 in the process.

A statement issued by the Institute’s Coordinator, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations (CIPPR), Mr. Ademola Adekoya disclosed that LASU was selected after the FAO adjudged its bid as the best among those submitted by institutions in Nigeria. Read more

Seven Nigerian journalists die within seven days (Punch)

No fewer than seven journalists have died of various ailments over the last seven days in the country.

The death of one of them, Dan Foster, was announced on June 17 via different social media platforms. His wife, Lovina, confirmed to Channels Television that he was tested for the COVID-19 and the result came back positive on Tuesday and he died on Wednesday.

Foster worked with Cool FM, Inspiration FM, City FM, Classic FM 97.3, among others. Read more

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has won the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 2020 election.

The chairman of the election panel and governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, declared Ize-Iyamu winner of the direct primary on Monday evening.

Ize-Iyamu defeated Pius Odubu and Osaro Obazee to clinch the party’s ticket ahead of the election slated for September, 2020.

Uzodinma announced that Ize-Iyamu garnered 27,388 votes while his rival, Pius Odubu, polled only 3,776 votes. Read more

Another set of 17 illegal miners, mostly youths from the north, heading to Itagunmodi, Osun State, were on Sunday intercepted in Ikire.

Recalled that on Thursday, June 4, 63 illegal miners, mostly youths from Zamfara State, heading to mining sites in Ilesha and Ile Ife were intercepted by Amotekun corps in Ikire, and forced out of the state.

The new set of youths, were intercepted by Amotekun men at their checkpoint in Ikire after the bus conveying them was stopped by the Amotekun corps. Read more

Early morning fire consumes part of Oba Market, Benin (Guardian)

A fire outbreak early Monday morning at a section of the popular Oba Market, Benin, has consumed hundreds of shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The incident happened barely few days after the Edo Government had ordered traders to return to the market from various primary schools that served as makeshift markets in the last six weeks.

A record temperature of 38°C has been recorded in the Arctic Circle amid a summer heatwave, with meterologists warning that is 18°C hotter than normal for this time of year. The small Siberian town of Verkhoyansk experienced the day time high temperature, a record for inside the Arctic Circle. It typically reaches a summer high of around 20°C. Scientists previously said that temperatures this hot would not be seen within the Arctic Circle until 2100, warning the spike is caused by a combination of natural weather patterns and man-made climate change. Sudan warns against escalation in Nile dam dispute (AlJazeera)

Sudan has warned against escalation and urged further negotiations with Egypt and Ethiopia over the construction of a controversial dam on the Blue Nile river by Addis Ababa.

Tensions are running high between the three countries after recent talks failed to produce a deal on the filling and operation of the $4.6bn Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Finland’s Nokia Oyj plans to cut 1,233 jobs at its French subsidiary Alcatel-Lucent International, equivalent to a third of the unit’s workforce, the group said on Monday, confirming an earlier Reuters report.

The announcement has political resonance in France as Nokia bought the unit five years ago on condition it would keep jobs.
