The talk-of-town wedding of two wives by one Akpove at Lagos-Igbide, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State, is currently ongoing. 

A poster of the groom and brides appeared on the social media last week with tongues set wagging over the unusual phenomenon. 

The colourful wedding, which is taking place at Late Ekpe Hitler’s Compound, Opp Ugala Filling Station, Lagos-Igbide, has scores of guests in attendance as many of them left the various church services to behold the wonder. Read more

Lagos investigates 158 crime scenes, 437 paternity cases  (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has said its Forensic Centre has investigated about 158 crime scenes as well as 437 paternity cases associated with child support and inheritance.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), made the disclosure during the virtual 5th Edition of Lagos Forensic Symposium hosted by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre and the ITSI – Biosciences LLC, Johnstown, PA USA.

While speaking on the importance of forensic science, Onigbanjo noted that the introduction of forensic science to criminal justice administration had enhanced police investigations.

Another 4 housemates evicted from Nigeria’s Teachers Reality TV Show (Leadership)

Another four housemates have been evicted from the second edition of Teachers Naija, a Nigerian reality TV show.

The quartet namely Babatunde Adegunji, Folarin Ademola, Marcel Sopuluchukwu and Rachael Banta, were sent packing on Thursday during the live eviction show.

The event was the second eviction since the show kicked off on August 3.

Their eviction has now put the number of housemates to 12 as the grand finale draws closer.

The reality show, an initiative of Anub Media Limited, will wrap up on August 22, with the winner getting a 2-bedroom flat in Abuja alongside N2m cash prize, while the first and the second runner up will get N1.5m and N1m respectively. Read more

Rail travellers lament hike in boarding cost (Sun)

Hundreds of rail passengers traversing various train stations from Ujevwu in Udu Local Government Area of Delta state to Itakpe in Kogi state, have expressed anger and displeasure over the outrageous hike in cost of boarding train currently being charged by the management of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) along the routes.

Investigations revealed that the cost of train from Ujevwu to Itakpe, pegged at N1900 when the train services started off in February this year and later increased to N2200 within two months is now N3000, all within the seven (7) months of its operations, representing over 70percent increase.

Same was applicable with passengers that boarded the train from Ujevwu to Uromi, at the cost of N650 when the train started in February 2021, later increased to N850 and after a short while to N1050 and now being made to cough out N1600 on the same route all within the 7months the train services commenced.

The passengers who were visibly angry and disappointed at the various train stations visited, especially at Agbarho, Okpara, Abraka and Agbor to Agenebode, could not hide their feelings against the Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) for inflicting such hardship on the masses who were beginning to appreciate the train as an affordable means of transportation. UNIJOS suspends second semester exams over Plateau killing Punch)

Following a breakdown of t(he peace in some parts of Jos, Plateau State after the killing of over 20 people, and forcing the state government to impose a 24-hour curfew on Jos North LGA, authorities of the University of Jos have suspended ongoing second semester examinations till further notice.

The university announced this on Sunday in a statement signed by its Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, Abdullahi Abdullahi.

According to the statement, “Following the unfortunate security breach that occurred in some parts of Jos Metropolis which has led the Plateau State Government to impose a 24-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area, management of the University of Jos has approved the suspension of the ongoing second semester examinations for the 2019/2020 academic session.

“Consequently, all examinations earlier scheduled for between Monday 16th and Saturday 21st, August  2021 have been suspended until further notice. Read more

Nigeria imposes partial curfew after deadly attack (Guardian)

Nigerian authorities on Sunday imposed a curfew in parts of central Plateau state, a day after a suspected Christian militia attacked a convoy of 90 Muslims, killing at least 23.

Northwest and central Nigeria have for years struggled with violence between mainly Muslim nomadic herders and Christian farmers over control of resources, water and land.

Condemning the attack, President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement that this was “not an agriculturalist-on-pastoralist confrontation but rather a direct, brazen and wickedly motivated attack.”

On Saturday, “a group of attackers suspected to be Irigwe youths (predominantly Christian)… attacked a convoy of five buses with Muslim faithful,” said police spokesman Ubah Ogaba. Read more

JAMB, heads of tertiary institutions decide 2021 /2022 admission cut-off point Aug 31 (Nation)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) and heads of tertiary institutions will on August 31 at a Policy Meeting, peg the minimum cut – off mark for 2021/ 2022 admissions.

According to the Board, decisions would be reached on the new minimum cut-off marks and other admission issues at the policy meeting which will be chaired by Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Last year, JAMB, in collaboration with Vice – Chancellors of universities, Rectors of Polytechnics and Provosts of Colleges of Education, pegged the minimum cut – off mark at 160 and above for admission into universities, 120 for polytechnics and 100 for colleges of education.

The board said this in its weekly bulletin released by Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin on Sunday in Abuja. Read more

Odumeje tackles Chris Okotie over comment on TB Joshua (Punch)

General overseer of Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention Deliverance Ministry, Prophet Chukwuemeka Odumeje, has warned Pastor Chris Okotie.

Okotie, who superintends over Household of God Church in Lagos, had made remarks about the life and times of deceased Prophet Temitope Joshua of the Synagogue.

In a Facebook church service monitored by our correspondent on Sunday, Odumeje known with the popular name ‘The lion himself’ disclosed his displeasure about Okotie’s current remarks.

According to him, Okotie is in a far lesser position to analyse about the life time of Joshua, adding that spirituality is not English. Read more

At least six prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are being tipped to replace the party’s embattled national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, at the October national convention, The Nation gathered yesterday.

Five of the aspirants are southerners like Secondus, the only northerner being the immediate past governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo.

This includes shots of the exes together during President Joe Biden’s inauguration, where J. Lo performed “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful.” Photos and clips of the star alone during the event, however, remain.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic (Metro)

The upcoming sequel to Venom has unfortunately been postponed once again as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the Marvel movie, which is the follow up-to the 2018 film, was first scheduled to be released to cinemas in October 2020, before being pushed back a year to September 24, 2021.

However, Sony Pictures has now decided to postpone the movie again by a few weeks to October 15, mainly due to a surge in cases of the Delta variant in the United States.

According to Variety, the spread of the variant has caused a ‘decline in consumer confidence in returning to the movies’, with the studio said to be worried about the theatrical release of the film. Read more

Afghanistan on the brink of Taliban takeover (BBC)

Afghanistan is on the brink of a total Taliban takeover, with the insurgents reaching the outskirts of the capital after capturing most of the country.

President Ashraf Ghani was reported to have fled the country as the Taliban drew closer to victory.

Officials earlier said talks had taken place to ensure a peaceful transition.

Thousands of Afghans have sought refuge in Kabul in recent weeks. There were scenes of panic in the city on Sunday as people tried to flee. Read more

Virginia Roberts Giuffre may have a former employee of Jeffery Epstein on her side in her bombshell sexual assault lawsuit against Prince Andrew.

Zambia’s incumbent president has described Thursday’s elections as “not free and fair”.

Early results show President Edgar Lungu trailing his main opponent, businessman Hakainde “HH” Hichilema.

The president said election officials from his party Patriotic Front had been chased from polling stations, leaving votes unprotected.

In response, Mr Hichilema said the statement was the “desperate final act of an outgoing administration”. Read more

According to Deadline, the agreement ‘mutually benefits both sides’, which echoes Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s words in the company’s latest earnings call with investors where he said Disney had ‘figured out ways to fairly compensate our talent so that no matter what the business model is that we have to go to market with, everybody feels satisfied’.

Harry Kane has been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Manchester City on Sunday.

Kane’s future remains in doubt as City remain keen on signing the Spurs striker before the end of the transfer window.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is standing firm over Kane’s situation and is understood to be refusing to sell the 28-year-old, even if City meet his £160 million asking price.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka pledged to donate all of her winnings from her tournament next week to victims of the deadly Haiti earthquake that has killed at least 304 people.

“Really hurts to see all the devastation that’s going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can’t catch a break,” the 23-year old, who is of half-Haitian on her father’s side, and half-Japanese on her mother’s side, tweeted in response to the news on Saturday night.

Gerd Muller: Bayern Munich’s German legend dies aged 75 (BBC)

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75.

One of the best strikers in history, Muller scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

He also scored 547 goals in 594 competitive games during 15 years at Bundesliga giants Bayern.

A positive drug test cost Sha’Carri Richardson the chance to run for Olympic gold in Tokyo, but the star American sprinter will face the all-Jamaican trio of 100-meter medalists next week at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon.

After finishing first at that distance at the U.S. Olympic trials in June, the 21-year-old Richardson was suspended for a month by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for marijuana, costing her a spot on the U.S. track and field squad.
