Homicide detectives attached to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State are investigating the circumstances behind an alleged killing and dumping of the body of a widow by the side of the road at Igando by her lover. The suspect, one Clement Ejindo, a dealer in cosmetics and provisions, was arrested when a video of him and the deceased identified as Promise Abor went viral on social media.

The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had then ordered a full investigation. Upon the directives, detectives from Igando police station were able to track a mechanic friend of the suspect, who led policemen to his hideout. The police said the deceased children had led the police to the mechanic on the ground that it was he who brought the suspect’s car key to their house. Read more

Man, 56, remanded for defiling neighbour’s 10-year-old girl (Punch)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded a 56-year-old estate agent, Lawal Taiwo, in the Kirikiri Custodial Centre for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter.

The magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Taiwo, who resides at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the police prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at his house in September 2018.

He said the defendant unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the girl. Read more

Lassa fever patient in Lagos responding to treatment, says LUTH (Guardian)

The management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, yesterday assured Lagos residents that the Lassa fever patient who was admitted to the hospital is responding to treatment.

Mr. Pius Ewa, speaking for the Public Relations Officer of the institution told The Guardian yesterday that the patient came to Lagos from an unknown destination and after medical test, it was discovered he was infected with Lassa fever virus.

He said: “Currently, he is in our isolated facility centre where he is being managed by healthcare professionals and so far, he has been responding to treatment, which is the most important thing. Read more

Sexagenarian beheaded, pastor arrested for prophesying corpse location (Punch)

There was panic at Alaiyiama, Obollo community, in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, following the beheading of a 68-year-old woman, Mrs Augustina Inebere.

This is even as the police arrested the Pastor-in-Charge of Arm of the Lord Church, Goddy Onyeho, for allegedly giving what the police called a suspicious prophecy.

The cousin of the deceased woman, Anthony Njoku, told our correspondent on Thursday that her corpse was found 17 days after she went missing. Read more

NCDC confirms 103 deaths from Lassa fever (Vanguard)

A total of 103 people died from 586 confirmed cases of Lassa fever out of 2,176 suspected cases in 101 Local Government Areas of 26 States of the Federation within the first seven weeks of 2020.

An update of the Lassa fever Situation Report (Epi Week 07: 10 – 16 February 2020) released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, confirmed that the deaths were reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.6 per cent which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2019 (21.1 percent). Coronavirus: Ukraine protesters attack buses carrying China evacuees (BBC)

Dozens of protesters in a Ukrainian town have attacked buses carrying evacuees from coronavirus-hit China.

The evacuees were being brought to the hospital in Novi Sanzhary, in the central Poltava region, where they will be held in quarantine for 14 days.

Many residents fear the virus could spread through the town, which has a population of about 10,000.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged people to show solidarity, and to remember that “we are all human”.Read more

The president of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has publicly apologised after facing backlash for a ‘clearly racist’ fashion show. The New York fashion school hosted an alumni runway show on 7 February, showcasing designers from its MFE Fashion Design class, but the models were wearing enormous prosthetic lips, ears and bushy eyebrows. Model Amy Lefevre told The New York Post that she felt ‘uncomfortable’ and refused to wear the weird accessories, which she described as ‘clearly racist’ and resembling ‘monkey ears’. Read more

Roger Stone: ‘Disgusted’ judge jails Trump ally (BBC)

A judge has expressed “disgust” at US President Donald Trump’s former adviser Roger Stone, as she sentenced him to 40 months in prison.

Stone, 67, was found guilty in November on seven counts of lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering.

US scientists claim to have found a coronavirus vaccine (Metro)

Scientists at a genetic engineering company in Texas claim they have created a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus. Greffex told the Houston Business Journal it is ready for animal testing and review by US regulators. However, developing a vaccine is only the first stage in the journey towards distributing one, with most experts in agreement that the period between testing and production typically takes between 18 months and two years. The firm also insisted that, for the sake of safety, scientists avoided using any form of the virus itself to make the vaccine. Read more

Heartland FC of Owerri has been banned from signing new players for the next two registration seasons until it complies with a ruling of the League Management Company (LMC) in separate complaints of unlawful termination of contract and indebtedness filed by two former players of the club, Maduabuchi Okereke and Fatuwanse Alfred Olusegun.

Maduabuchi and Fatuwase had in separate petitions to the LMC dated November 5, 2019, complained about unpaid dues, wrongful termination of contract and compensation. Read more

Bundesliga turnover passes four billion euros mark (Vanguard)

The total turnover of the 18 clubs in Germany’s Bundesliga passed the four billion euros mark in 2018-19 for the first time, it was announced Tuesday.

The figure of 4.02 billion euros ($4.34 billion) released by the German Football League (DFL) is an increase of 5.4 percent on the previous season.

Compared to their main European rivals, the Bundesliga still lags behind the English Premier league, which made 5.8 billion euros (£4.8 billion) in 2018-19. Read more

$9.5m fraud: Court rejects EFCC’s request to join Pinnick as defendant (Punch)

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday, rejected the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s request to have the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, joined as a defendant in a corruption case involving alleged misappropriation of $9.5m FIFA grant.

The court also declined to join the NFF’s Secretary-General, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, as a defendant in the case.

Ruling on the EFCC’s application, Justice Peter Affen held that it would amount to abuse of court processes to join the two men as defendants after they had been discharged by the Federal High Court in Abuja in respect of similar charges. Read more
