A man, identified simply as Joel, has lost his life after he was allegedly refused treatment by the Isolo General Hospital in Lagos State over fear of being a COVID-19 patient.

It was gathered that Joel slumped on Sunday while playing football and was rushed to the hospital, but he was allegedly refused treatment on the fear that he might be a COVID-19 patient.

A family friend of the victim, identified simply as Amaka, who narrated the incident on Twitter, alleged that the nurses on duty claimed that they were busy and refused to attend to Joel. Read more

WARIF takes COVID-19, sexual violence awareness to rural communities (Guardian)

As the cases of the COVID-19 infection in Lagos State continue to rise daily with an increasing number of cases of violence against women and girls also being recorded, Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF), one of the nation’s foremost NGOs tackling the prevalence of gender-based violence, has become concerned with the number of these cases not being attended to in the rural areas.

Recognizing the need to address this issue at the grassroots level, the organization has launched the WARIF COVID 19 Response in Rural Communities Initiative. This sensitization program was designed in collaboration with traditional birth attendants, previously trained by WARIF as first responders on gender-based violence cases. Read more

Police brutalise, detain Lagos officials during enforcement (Punch)

Some riot policemen serving as security operatives on the site of an ongoing building construction on Olumide Madariola Street, Sea Side Estate, Badore Ajah, Lagos, have allegedly attacked a team of the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The PUNCH was told that personal effects of the officials, who were on an official assignment, were also seized by the policemen.

The Assistant Director, Public Affairs Unit, LASBCA, Gbadeyanka Bello, said the team was acting on instructions of the general manager of the agency after several reports of illegal and non-conforming constructions were reported in the area. Read more

Lagos extends deadline for filing of annual returns to June 30 (Guardian)

Lagos State Government, in her continuous effort to provide the much-needed relief to taxpayers and mitigate the economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic, has through the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) further extended the deadline for filing of Annual Tax Returns to June 30, 2020.

Annual returns for individuals (both employees and self-employed persons) that were initially due on May 31st, 2020 can now be filed any time on or before the 30th of June, 2020.

According to the Executive Chairman of LIRS, Mr Ayodele Subair, “As the Lagos State Government keeps abreast of global best practices in containing the Covid-19 pandemic and eases the effects of an economic downturn on taxpayers and residents of the State, LIRS had initially extended the deadline for filing annual tax returns for two months, from the statutory March 31st of every fiscal year to May 31, 2020. 3 dead in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident (Punch)

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State said three persons died while 14 others sustained injuries in two separate accidents along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

FRSC state Sector Commander, Mr Clement Oladele, gave the details in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria in Ota.

Oladele explained that the first crash involved two vehicles, a DAF Truck marked JHN 410 XA and a Mazda Bus marked KRD 290 XY. The accident occurred about 6.35 a.m. before Isara Bridge, near Ogere. Read more

COVID-19: Delta confirms 7 new cases (Vanguard)

Delta State, Monday night confirmed seven new cases of Covid-19, moving the number of cases in the state from 39 to 46 in less than 48 hours. The state also within the period recorded one discharged case and one death.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu confirmed the new cases in his verified WhatsApp page, saying that active cases in the State were now 26, discharged 13 and deaths seven. Read more

Housewife in police net for allegedly stabbing husband to death (DailyTrust)

A housewife, who allegedly stabbed her husband to death in his sleep, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command. The deceased, Mr. Uzougbo Iwebunor, was killed on May 15, in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North LGA of the state. The spokesperson of the police command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, told journalists in Asaba, the state capital, that the suspect was in police custody. Read more

A post by US President Donald Trump has been given a fact-check label by Twitter for the first time.

President Trump tweeted: “There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent.”

Four officers have been fired after a horrific video showed an officer kneeling on a black man’s neck as he pleaded ‘I can’t breathe’ before he died. Minneapolis, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey heralded the firings as ‘the right call’ after George Floyd died following his brutal arrest by officers on Monday. The officers who were fired have not been identified. Police were initially called to investigate a report of a forgery at a business and found the Floyd, who matched the suspect’s description, in his car, police spokesman John Elder said. Read more

China is going to Mars in July (Metro)

China has ambitious plans to launch a mission to Mars in the next couple of months. Bejing is fixing on a launch for the red planet with the aim of landing a remote-controlled rover on the surface. That launch could come as soon as July. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is the main contractor for the country’s space program and confirmed the plans over the weekend. Covid-19 case tally reaches 5.5m worldwide (RT)

The number of Covid-19 infections has topped 5.5 million across the globe, with more than a million new cases reported in the past 10 days.

More than two-thirds of all confirmed cases are in Europe and the United States.

Bayern beat Dortmund to close in on title (BBC)

Leaders Bayern Munich took a big step to retaining their Bundesliga title by winning away from home at second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Joshua Kimmich’s wonderful chip from 20 yards gave Bayern the lead just before half-time after both sides had efforts cleared off the line.

Knicks legend Patrick Ewing back home after being treated for COVID-19 (CBC)

Georgetown basketball coach and former NBA great Patrick Ewing has been released from the hospital and is recovering from COVID-19 at home, his son said Monday.

The 57-year-old Hall of Famer who played for the Hoyas in college and the New York Knicks in the NBA announced Friday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and was being treated at a hospital.

Patrick Ewing Jr. said three days later on Twitter that his father was doing fine after receiving treatment and thanked the doctors and nurses who looked after him during his hospital stay. He also thanked fans for their thoughts and prayers after his father’s announcement. Read more
