Man remanded for alleged defilement of 15-year-old girl (Punch)

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja, on Tuesday, remanded a man Onyeka Mbaka in the Nigerian Correctional Centre for the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl.

Justice Rahman Oshodi made the remand order of the defendant after he was arraigned on a count of defilement preferred against him by the state government.

The prosecution counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, told the court that the defendant defiled the victim sometime in March 2023. Read more

Court remands man over alleged murder (Punch)

The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Monday ordered the remand of one Monday Odeh in the Nigerian Correctional Service Facility, over the alleged murder of a 54-year-old man, Abdulahi Yinusa.

Justice Adenike Coker made the remand order of Odeh after he was arraigned on a count of murder preferred against him by the state government.

During the arraignment, the state prosecuting counsel, Ms Titi Adeegbe, told the court that the defendant unlawfully murdered Yinusa on April 4, 2019, in the Magodo area of the state. Read more

Lagos police foil extortion attempt, rescue stranded motorist (Punch)

Operatives of the Nigerian police Rapid Response Squad in Lagos have apprehended one suspect, 28-year-old Michael Desmond, for allegedly trying to extort a stranded motorist on Otunba Jobi Fele Way, Central Business District, Ikeja, whose vehicle had broken down.

This was made known by the Lagos State Police Command on their X account on Monday.

Sharing a picture of the suspect the command said, “Around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives in response to a distress call rescued a motorist (name withheld) who was held hostage by two miscreants bent on extorting him after his vehicle broke down on Otunba Jobi Fele Way, Central Business District, Ikeja. Woman arraigned over alleged threat to kill bizman (Punch)

The police on Friday arraigned a woman, Folashade Olalude, before the Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court over alleged cyberbullying and threat to kill a businessman.

The defendant who was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Olwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe is facing four counts bordering on conspiracy, intent to steal, cyberbullying and threat to kill, preferred against her by the police.

The prosecutor, Mr. Henry Obiazi, told the court that the defendant and others now at large, between  2015 and 2022, conspired among themselves to commit the alleged offences. Read more

NDLEA nabs 42-year-old, seizes Canadian Loud consignment (Punch)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted a large consignment of Canadian Loud, an imported strong synthetic strain of cannabis, packaged in 324 bags with a gross weight of 111.2 kilograms.

The illicit drug consignment was intercepted in the Onikan area of the Island of Lagos State, while being conveyed for distribution in an unregistered Grand Caravan vehicle, by a 42-year-old suspect, Taofeek Yusuf.

The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, revealed the development in a statement on Sunday. Read more

Lagos police arraign 2 ‘‘one-chance’’ robbery suspects (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned two suspects, Jamiu Olalekan (31) and Oni Adeola (27), identified as ‘one-chance’ armed robbery suspects known for their criminal activities in Abule-Egba and its environs.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, shared the development in a statement posted on his  X account on Saturday.

Earlier, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reported the arrest of three alleged ‘one-chance’ armed robbers with one escaping, on January 4 near Jubilee Bridge in the Abule-Egba area of Lagos. Read more

Lagos police probes banker’s death (Punch)

The case of the female employee of a bank in Ikorodu, Amarachi Ugochukwu, who allegedly took her own life after consuming an insecticide has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, City Round has learnt.

The incident reportedly happened on Monday within the premises of the bank when the 32-year-old locked herself in the restroom and ingested the insecticide, unknown to her work colleagues.

Her body was found when other staff members searched for her when the phone she left on her table kept ringing and she was not around to take the calls.

Brother nabbed for assaulting sister in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has confirmed the arrest of the elder brother of a lady identified as Abigail Chris who cried out on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) against the series of assault she suffered from her brother.

This was contained in a response sent to PUNCH Metro by the spokesperson for the agency, Joke Ladenegan-Oginni, and received by our correspondent on Thursday.

An X user identified as @Ayomiepat_, had, on Monday, shared some posts and pictures revealing the physical and mental state of Abigail, stating that the victim needed urgent help and called on the authorities to intervene. Read more

How my husband defiled my sister’s granddaughter – Witness (Punch)

A Prosecution Witness, Olayemi Hosa, on Wednesday narrated to the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how her husband, Olumuyiwa Adjoto, allegedly raped her sister’s six-year-old granddaughter, at their home in Mowo, Badagry, Lagos in 2022.

Hosa, a trader who spoke in Yoruba and translated in English language, told Justice Rahman Oshodi that the victim had come to spend the Easter holidays in their home when the defendant defiled her.

She testified that the incident happened on April 19, 2022, when the victim came for a two-week Easter holiday. Read more

Lagos DSVA, police rescue pregnant woman assaulted by partner (Guardian)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) with the help of the Police in the early hours of Wednesday rescued a pregnant woman who was assaulted by her partner.

Lagos DSVA spokesperson, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, in a statement, said after the agency received yet another distress call from a mandated reporter of an alleged case of domestic violence involving the woman and her husband.

Ladenegan-Oginni said this is happening in the wake of the recent report of a seven-month pregnant woman who lost her life as a result of domestic violence. Read more

Court strikes out Mompha’s suit to vacate EFCC’s arrest warrant (Channels)

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday struck out a suit filed by internet celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha, seeking to vacate an order made for his arrest.

Justice Ayokunle Faji, who presided over the court, struck out Mompha’s suit for lack of diligent prosecution.

Mompha, who currently resides in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, in the suit filed by his lawyers, had asked the court for an order mandating the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to withdraw the request for his arrest made to the ICPO-INTERPOL in March 2023, given that the anti-graft agency failed and/or refused to furnish the ICPO-INTERPOL with specific details of the allegations against him.
