Man remanded over alleged murder, cultism

An Abakaliki Magistrate Court 1 in Ebonyi, on Monday remanded a 35-year old man, Chinedu Oduburu, in a correctional centre over alleged murder and cultism.

Oduburu, whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, cultism and murder.

The Prosecutor, Insp Bassey Okon, told the court that Oduburu committed the offences on Feb. 12, at Oriuzor in Ezza North Local Government Area of the state.

Okon said that the defendant used a dagger to unlawfully kill a 39-year old man known as Igboke Nwabueze.

He said that the offence was punishable under Section 319 of the criminal code cap 33 vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.

He further said that the defendant belonged to a secret cult group known as Baggers Confraternity in contravention of Section 3(1)(3) of the Ebonyi State Law.

The Defendant had no legal representation in court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Ojemba Isu-Oko ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional centre, saying that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case.

Isu-Oko ordered that the case file and exhibits should be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.

He adjourned the matter to May 3. (NAN)
