Man seeks justice for girlfriend killed by police (Nation)

A 33-year-old man, Emmanuel Ajomafuwe, on Saturday pleaded with the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry investigating rights abuses by the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to help him get justice for his girlfriend, Ada Ifeanyi, shot dead by a policeman.

Ajomafuwe told the panel chaired by Justice Doris Okuwobi he was driving with his 20-year-old girlfriend, Ada, around 7 am on Saturday, April 13, 2019, in the Apapa area of Lagos when they were accosted by a team of policemen who claimed that they flagged him down but he refused to stop.

Ajomafuwe said he told them he did not see them stopping him as it was raining.

He said the development led to an argument between them and the police. Read more

A 35-year-old hairdresser, Mrs Hannah Olugbodi, on Saturday, narrated how she ended up on a crutch after her left leg was shattered by a stray bullet fired by some men of the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad who were attempting to arrest a young man with tattoos in June 2018 at the Ijeshatedo area of Lagos.

Olugbodi said the SARS operatives were at one Ogun City Hotel, to demand money to fuel their vehicle when they saw the young man with tattoos among a group of persons watching a football match at the hotel.

According to the petitioner, the owner of the hotel, one Abu, who usually gave the SARS operatives money, was not around to attend to them. Read more

Accident claims 6 lives on Lagos-Ibadan expressway (Guardian)

No fewer than six people were confirmed dead in an accident which involved a truck and a Honda Pilot Jeep in the Ogere area on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

One other person was badly injured in the accident.

Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abeokuta.

According to Umar, the incident happened around 7 a.m. and was caused by excessive speeding on the part of the jeep driver. Read more

Hunters secure release of Akeredolu’s CoS wife (Nation)

Local hunters working with members of the Amotekun Corps have secured the release of the abducted wife of the Chief of Staff to Ondo Governor, Chief Olugbenga Ale.

Chief Ale’s wife was abducted on Thursday night while returning from Lagos along the Ondo-Akure highway.

She was released after about two days in the kidnappers’ den.

A source said the woman was released on Saturday morning after the hunters and other security agencies got to the location where the kidnappers kept their victims. Read more

FG electrifies Ogun community after 200 years (Punch)

The Federal Government through its Rural Electrification Agency on Saturday announced the provision of electricity to the Olooji community, Ijebu East, Ogun State, for the first time since the community came into existence 200 years ago.

It said residents of the community experienced power supply for the first time on Friday with the official inauguration of a 100KWP solar-powered off-grid electricity system by the REA.

The REA in a statement issued in Abuja by its spokesman, Mouktar Ebraheem, said the remote community had about 4,500 residents. Read more

Insurgency: 1.17m women, over 500,000 girls displaced in Nigeria – LEDAP (Vanguard)

Centre for Reproductive Rights and Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) has said that out of the 2.2 million Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in Nigeria, 1.17 million are women while 510,555 are girls of reproductive age.

LEDAP, a non Governmental Organization, NGO made the disclosure in a report titled “The Conflict in Northeast Nigeria’s Impact on the Sexual and Reproductive Rights of Women and Girls” which it made available to Sunday Vanguard in Abuja over the weekend, attributing the situation to the lingering insurgency and insecurity in the north east part of the country.

It stated that sexual exploitation, HIV transmissions, inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health services, maternal deaths, and injuries were among the impacts of the conflict on women and girls. Read more

Buhari to roll out autogas scheme Dec. 1 — NGEP Chairman (Guardian)

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Dec. 1 roll out the autogas scheme in Abuja as the Federal Government moves to create alternative fuel for automobiles and other prime movers in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dr Mohammed Ibrahim, Chairman, National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP), made the announcement at a meeting with media stakeholders on Saturday in Lagos.

Ibrahim said the autogas scheme and deepening domestic utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) would create about 12.5 million direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians. Read more

A model from California is helping women catch cheating cads on Instagram.

Paige Woolen, 28, who has over 200,000 followers on her main account, has a side account, @dudesinthedm, from which she slides into the DMs of men who are suspected of cheating to see if she can catch them in the act.

“I had been noticing a lot of guys that DM me on my personal account had profile photos with their girlfriends,” Woolen told the Star. “It got me wondering if their girlfriends know or care that they DM random girls with photos in their bikinis.”

She posts images of the direct message exchanges she has with the men on Instagram, thus exposing the would-be cheaters. Read more

Ethiopia’s Tigray crisis: Regional capital Mekelle ‘under heavy fire’ (BBC)

The capital of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region has come under heavy shelling from government forces, aid workers and regional officials say.

The centre of Mekelle is being hit “with heavy weaponry and artillery,” the ruling regional party said.

The Ethiopian army has been locked in conflict with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) for weeks.

Dozens of rallies are planned on Saturday against a new French law that would restrict sharing images of police, only days after the country was shaken by footage showing officers beating and racially abusing a Black man.

A ballot recount requested by President Donald Trump in Wisconsin’s largest county has given a slight bump to Democratic challenger Joe Biden, as local officials work through a second audit in another major district.

The new tally from Milwaukee County gave Biden a net increase of 132 votes after it concluded on Friday, out of some 460,000 ballots cast in total. While Trump himself gained 125 votes, the Democratic candidate accrued more than twice that number overall.

After losing out to Biden by more than 20,000 votes in the state, the Trump team called for recounts in two of Wisconsin’s largest and most Democratic-leaning counties — Milwaukee and Dane — hoping to flip the state red in what would have been a dramatic reversal. Read more

Iran’s president has blamed Israel for the killing of a top nuclear scientist on Friday, and said it would not slow down the country’s nuclear programme.

Hassan Rouhani also said Iran would retaliate over Mohsen Fakhrizadeh’s killing at a time of its choosing.

Fakhrizadeh was killed in an ambush on his car by gunmen in the town of Absard, east of the capital Tehran.
