One Kazeem Mustapha has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stabbing one Afeez Oluwole in the chest over N500.

The incident happened around the Satellite Town area of the state.

Elkana said Oluwole died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the attack, adding that Mustapha would be charged for the crime.

He stated, “On February 25, 2020, around 12.30 pm, one Rafiu Dauda of No. 36 Alebiosu Street, Ijegun, Satellite Town, reported at the Elemoro Police Station that his apprentice, Afeez Oluwole, 33, was stabbed in his right chest with a broken bottle by one Kazeem Mustapha, on the Madoti Estate, Fin-Niger, Satellite Town, following a misunderstanding over N500. Coronavirus: Lagos Assembly urges Sanwo-Olu to ensure  proper sensitization of residents (Vanguard)

Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state to ensure proper sensitization of the residents of the state about the dreaded Coronavirus.

The issue was raised under Matter of Urgent Public Importance by Mr. Akeem Shokunle representing Oshodi/Isolo 1 during plenary yesterday and it was seconded by Mr. Lukman Olumo representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun 1.

Shokunle, who is also the Chairman House Committee on Health, stated that it was important that the Governor should sensitize the people of Lagos State on the matter and implement the law passed by the 8th Assembly on Cancer And Diseases Control Institute. Read more

Naira Marley tackles EFCC over phone content (Punch)

Hip-hop artiste, Azeez Fashola, alias Naira Marley, has opposed the move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to tender in evidence a Digital Versatile Disc said to contain the analysis of the content of his mobile phone.

The EFCC attempted to tender the DVD last Friday before the Federal High Court in Lagos where Naira Marley is being tried for alleged credit card fraud.

A forensic analyst with the EFCC, Augustine Anosike, had told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that he carried out an analysis of the content of the mobile phone recovered from Naira Marley during investigation. Read more

Worshippers shun coronavirus scare, attend services in large numbers (Guardian)

Despite the panic that greeted the news of the index case of coronavirus in Nigeria on Friday, it was business as usual yesterday in most worship centres across Lagos State as many residents appeared indifferent to the news and carried on with their daily activities with less concern about its spread at such huge gatherings. The scare didn’t impact on the attendance as faithful trooped out in large numbers gaily dressed.

The Guardian observed that residents at various worship centres were without the nose mask though it was gathered that at Daystar Centre, Oregun, members were asked to use hand sanitizers provided by the church before entering the auditorium. A member, Olaoluwa Awe, said: “For me, it is a message that asides prayers, Christians should take preventive measures against the spread of coronavirus this season.” Read more

NSCDC foils attempt by vandals to smuggle petroleum product to Benin (Vanguard)

It was the end of the road for four suspected vandals who attempted to smuggle petroleum product to Benin Republic, following their arrest, weekend, along Idale High sea in Badagry area of Lagos.

Recovered from them were 130 (25 litres) jerricans, filled with the smuggled products and two engine boats.

The suspects: Akpnoundje Sonday, 32; Soke Enoch, 25; Alber Kouwonou, 25 and Marsiel Evessehuo 24, arrested by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, NSCDC. Read more

Infected Italian Didn’t Lodge At Lagos Airport Hotel – Management (Independent)

The management of Lagos Airport Hotel Limited, Ikeja, says the Italian alleged to have brought the coronavirus into the country did not sleep in its hotel.

There had been media reports that the Italian, who was on a business trip to Lafarge Plc, had lodged at the hotel in Lagos.

The Police Command in Zamfara State has confirmed the killing of Malam Gambo Kujemi, the village Head of Kujemi in Dansadau District of Maru Local Government Area of the state by bandits. This is happening just as bandits killed 51 persons in a Kaduna village same day. Daily Trust reports that the suspected bandits attacked four villages in Igabi Local Government Area of the State killing 51 people and leaving many injured. At least 50 killed in northern Nigeria ‘bandit’ attacks (Guardian)

At least 50 people were killed in multiple attacks by armed ‘bandits’ on villages in an area of northern Nigeria rife with cattle theft and kidnappings, local officials said Monday.

Sources said around 100 armed assailants stormed into the villages of Kerawa, Zareyawa and Minda in Kaduna state at dawn on Sunday, gunning down worshippers as they left a mosque for morning prayers before killing residents, burning and looting homes.

“So far 50 bodies have been recovered but the figure is not conclusive and is very likely to rise as rescue efforts are still underway,” Zayyad Ibrahim, a lawmaker in the Nigerian parliament, told AFP on Monday. Read more

UNILAG launches anthem, to graduate 13,489 (Vanguard)

After nearly six decades of existence, the University of Lagos on Monday launched its school anthem, just as it is set to graduate 13,489 students during its 51st convocation ceremonies.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who briefed the press in Akoka, Lagos, said finally having an anthem for the institution was a dream come through.

“I am glad to inform you that the University of Lagos Senate has approved a University of Lagos Anthem which portrays the mission, vision and core values of this great citadel of learning. The Anthem will be officially launched today as part of the pre-convocation activities, ” he said.

Ogundipe, who commended, members of the committee that worked on the project, said the anthem would now be sung in all official activities in the school. Read more

The Supreme Court, again, on Monday, adjourned till Tuesday the hearing of the application seeking the review of its judgment which upturned the outcome of the last governorship election in Imo State.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Emeka Ihedioha is by his application filed on February 5, 2020, seeking the review of the apex court’s February 13, 2020 judgment which removed him from office after about seven months of being inaugurated as the Imo State governor.

The apex court, in the disputed verdict which Ihedioha alleged was obtained by fraud, installed the All Progressives Congress’ Hope Uzodinma, as Ihedioha’s replacement. Read more

A 32-year-old man who had unbearable erections lasting several hours is likely to have a condition caused by regular cannabis use, scientists say. It is thought to be the first case of marijuana-related priapism in a patient where all other known causes have been excluded.If left untreated, the condition causing persistent erections with no sexual stimulation can permanently damage the penis. Scientists studied the unusual case after an African American man went to the Coliseum Medical Centers twice in two weeks complaining of erections lasting 12 and six hours. The patient told doctors he smoked weed ‘several nights per week for the past six months’, including within the two hours before his priapism episodes. Read more

Coronavirus: 2 new cases reported in Singapore (Independent)

Health officials in Singapore have confirmed two additional novel coronavirus cases bringing the city-wide total number of cases to 108.

The Ministry of Health said that both cases had no recent travel history to China, Daegu and Cheongdo. One of the newly confirmed cases is tied to a cluster 12 confirmed cases at a company called Wizlearn Technologies, the ministry said in a statement.

So far, 78 patients have recovered from the novel coronavirus and been discharged from hospital. Of the 30 confirmed cases still being treated in hospital, six cases are in critical condition. Read more

Guinea-Bissau’s Cipriano Cassamá quits amid ‘death threats’ (BBC)

One of the two men declared president of Guinea-Bissau has resigned from the post after just one full day in office, saying his life was in danger.

Cipriano Cassamá was chosen by lawmakers as president following disputed elections in December.

This was despite the fact that former army general Umaro Cissoko Embaló had already been sworn in as president at a hotel in the capital, Bissau.

21 Dead As Bus Plunges Down A Hillside In S.Africa (Independent)

A Health Official said 21 people died when a bus veered off a gravel road and plunged down a hillside in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province on Monday.

“I cannot confirm the numbers, as our people are still working,” the Regional Health Department spokesman, Sizwe Kupelo, said.

Melting ice in Antarctica has uncovered an uncharted island that researchers have christened ‘Sif Island’. The new landmass was noticed by scientists from the Thwaites Glacier Offshore Research project after receding ice made it visible for the first time. Antarctica’s mighty Thwaites glacier is feeling the full effects of Earth’s warming climate and is retreating back faster than new ice can form. Sif Island is small, measuring only about 350 meters across, and is formed of volcanic granite. It’s still largely covered by ice but there are apparently a few seals that have made a home there. A family devastated by the death of their beloved dog paid $50,000 (£39,000) to clone him after he saved his pregnant owner from a rattlesnake. David and Alicia Tschirhart found out Labrador retriever Marley had cancer when their first daughter was born and were heartbroken she wouldn’t grow up with him. The parents decided to look into genetically duplicating 12-year-old Marley so they ‘wouldn’t lose everything of him’ when he died.
