South Side pastor has been a gospel and soul musician for decades — now his music gets sampled by Kanye (ChicagoTribune)

The music many of you love is made by a man you may not know.

His name? Pastor T.L. Barrett. Yes, you read that right.

Barrett, who has served in the church for more than 50 years and leads the Life Center COGIC Church, was also a prolific musician. Beginning in the 1960s, Barrett wrote, recorded and performed a signature brand of funk and soul-inspired gospel music. Although Barrett collaborated with the likes of the beloved Earth, Wind & Fire, his music was largely confined to a small group of gospel music listeners in the Chicago area. However, in the last decade, Barrett’s music has found a second life through sampling, mixing and covers by notable contemporary artists such as Kanye West, DJ Khaled, The Knocks and Leon Bridges.

Now, much of Barrett’s work has been collected for “I Shall Wear a Crown,” an all-encompassing and comprehensive box set featuring 49 songs spread across five LPs. “I Shall Wear a Crown” is out now on Numero Group of Chicago. Read more

He described the report as not only false and misleading but an attempt to blackmail the Bayelsa State government into awarding maintenance contract of the pitch to a certain contractor.

Igali, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, said “It is wicked and disappointing that people who have benefited so much from the state government would put up such a show of shame just to discredit and sabotage their own State.

“It is good to put on record that a team from CAF is currently in Yenagoa to inspect the facilities and so far, they have been impressed by what is on the ground including the recent upgrade before the Confederation Cup game between Bayelsa United and AS Ashanti of Guinea. Read more

Dominant Man City end Chelsea’s unbeaten start (BBC)

Manchester City produced an impressive display to end Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season with a deserved victory at Stamford Bridge.

In the meeting between two sides fully expected to fight it out for this season’s Premier League title, the reigning champions dominated against a strangely passive and conservative Chelsea.

Gabriel Jesus settled a tight affair when his 53rd-minute effort took a touch off Jorginho to beat Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy – but few could question City’s right to the win against the team who beat them in last May’s Champions League final, and the victory margin should have been far more emphatic.

Jesus almost added a second when Thiago Silva cleared his effort off the line while Aymeric Laporte should have scored but somehow slid a shot wide from inside the six-yard box. Read more
