A fraudster, Sylvester Ehiarinmian, 43, who defrauded a United State based Nigerian lady Miss Mary Ope 40, who has a vision of setting up a business in Nigeria has been arrested by operatives of the Zone 2 monitoring unit.

Parading the suspect Wednesday, the Assistant inspector general of police AIG Iliyasu said, the suspect made love advance to her despite being married with children and promise marrying her.

Lagos, operators begin process to reopen cinemas (Guardian)

Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) in Lagos State said they are ready to open for business.

The cinema operators said this at a virtual meeting with Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday.

The meeting was moderated by filmmaker and television host, Mosunmola Abudu, popularly called Mo Abudu.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Mr. Moses Babatope, “we are ready to open our cinemas any time today or tomorrow. Cinemas outside Lagos are already open and they are complying with all the necessary protocols. Read more

The Commandant-General of Nigeria Security and Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Abdullahi Gana, has approved the deployment of 13,311 personnel to beef up security in Edo State as part of efforts to ensure hitch-free conduct of Saturday gubernatorial election in the state.

The men and officers of the Corps were drawn from the headquarters, Abuja and neighbouring states such as Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta and Ondo to complement the personnel of Edo State Command and Zonal Command in Benin. Read more

Three dead as buildings collapse in Kano (Punch)

Three persons lost their lives as two buildings collapsed in Kano State.

One of them died when a building collapsed in Dawanu, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano, due to downpour.

The father of the deceased, Mallam Buba Anwar, said the sad incident happened about 03:am on Tuesday.

According to Anwar, he had an inkling that the sad incident could happen and quickly alerted his wife to take the children out of their room. Read more

7,000 sign petition asking EU, UK to bar el-Rufai (Punch)

Amid reports that the United States Government has placed a visa restriction on Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, at least 7,000 people have signed a petition calling on the United Kingdom and the European Union to follow suit.

Bill Gates Sr., the father of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, died of Alzheimer’s disease Tuesday, according to reports. He was 94.

Gates Sr., who was a World War II veteran and a founding partner for a Seattle-based law firm, passed away at his Hood Canal home in Seattle, reports CNN.

“We have all had a long time to reflect on just how lucky we are to have had this amazing man in our lives for so many years,” Gates Jr wrote on his website.

Gates Sr. was instrumental in building the charity known as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, globally, while domestically to expand educational endeavors and provide universal access to technology. Read more

Apple launches Apple Watch Series 6 with a blood oxygen sensor (Metro)

Apple has unveiled the latest version of the Apple Watch: the Apple Watch Series 6.

Taking over the mantle from last year’s Series 5, the new wearable device adds a performance boost and a blood oxygen sensor for the first time.

It uses red and infrared light to give wearers an insight into their oxygen saturation, or SpO2.

This represents the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body, and indicates how well this oxygenated blood is being delivered throughout the body. Read more

Hurricane Sally: ‘Catastrophic flooding’ as storm hits US (BBC)

Hurricane Sally has brought “historic and catastrophic flooding” to the southern US as it inches ashore.

The storm’s sluggish speed, roughly 3mph (5km/h) increases its capacity for destruction, pummelling coastal states with heavy rain.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported flooding from Tallahassee, Florida to Mobile Bay in Alabama.

It also warned of a “life-threatening” storm surge and river flooding inland as far as Georgia. Read more

Twitter has suspended the account of a Chinese virologist who has claimed that COVID-19 was manufactured in a laboratory.

Dr. Li-Meng Yan, a former researcher at the Hong Kong School of Public Health, went dark on the platform after she accused China of covering up evidence that the deadly virus came from a lab in Wuhan.

“They don’t want the people to know this truth. Also, that’s why I got suspended, I got suppression [and] I am the target that China Communist Part wants to [sic] disappear,” she told Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday. Read more

Massachusetts man, stepfather charged with vandalizing home with BLM signs (NYPost)

A Massachusetts man and his stepfather repeatedly vandalized a home displaying Black Lives Matter signs — spray-painting an obscenity on a tree and pelting eggs and tomatoes at the residence, authorities allege.

Joshua Simpson, 21, and Stephen Smith, 55, were arraigned Tuesday after a month-long investigation into vandalism, property damage and civil rights violations at the home in Lynnfield, Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett announced.

The pair, who also live in Lynnfield, were charged after a resident first reported the vandalism on Aug. 17, saying an obscenity directed toward Black Lives Matter was spray-painted on a driveway, Blodgett said. Read more

Lamine Diack: Former IAAF head found guilty of corruption and jailed (BBC)

Lamine Diack, the ex-head of athletics’ governing body, has been jailed after being found guilty of corruption.

The Senegalese, 87, faced corruption and money-laundering charges linked to the Russian doping scandal.

Diack was convicted of accepting bribes from athletes suspected of doping to cover up test results and letting them continue competing, including in the 2012 London Olympics.

He was sentenced to four years in prison, two of them suspended. Read more

FIFA estimates COVID-19 will cost global football $11 billion (Guardian)

FIFA on Wednesday put the cost of COVID-19 on football around the world at $11 billion in lost revenue.

The pandemic has already led to over 150 football associations to seek financial help from the $1.5 billion emergency relief fund set up by football’s governing body.

Olli Rehn, chairman of FIFA’s coronavirus steering committee, laid bare for the first time the true financial impact the virus has had on the game through fixture list chaos, empty stadiums and loss of TV rights revenue.

“It’s a huge number and it covers the football economy in its entirety, including all youth academies,” Rehn, a Finnish politician and governor of the Bank of Finland, told a press conference. Read more

The Denver Nuggets became the first NBA side to recover from 3-1 down twice in the same play-offs by beating the Los Angeles Clippers in game seven to reach the Western Conference finals.

Brazil’s government sent its support to Neymar Tuesday after he was red-carded for a fight in a Ligue 1 match in France, condemning the “racism” that triggered the brawl.

The Paris Saint-Germain star is facing punishment by the French league’s disciplinary commission after slapping defender Alvaro Gonzalez near the end of PSG’s 1-0 loss to Marseille Sunday, accusing the Spaniard of calling him a “monkey.”

Gonzalez denies the accusation. But in Neymar’s native Brazil, the ministry responsible for human rights issues said it stood behind the world’s most expensive footballer. Read more

Ministry to accommodate displaced shops’ owners in proposed National Stadium mall (Guardian)

Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, yesterday disclosed that the Federal Government would build a shopping mall inside the Lagos National Stadium to take care of some of the shops displaced at the sports complex.

He also disclosed that the stadium would no longer be neglected to the extent that some people would turn it into a big drinking bar.

Speaking in Lagos, Dare said the on going demolition of illegal structures at the stadium is aimed at bringing the venue back to shape, adding that it is part of the process leading to the eventual concession of the venue to the private sector. Read more
