Man who posted wife’s battered face on Facebook arraigned, granted N500,000 bail (Punch)
A Lagos-based man, Sulaiman Maiyegun, aka Afobaje, who allegedly battered his wife and bragged about it on Facebook was on Friday arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of assault occasioning harm and offensive publication.
In her ruling, Magistrate Folake Oshin granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties who must be a cleric and a family member to the defendant.
Maiyegun had on May 5 posted to his Facebook account, “I beat my wife and I am waiting for her police because I talked to a woman.” The post was attached with several pictures of the battered woman, identified as Mariam Gabriel, with blood oozing from her forehead.
Maiyegun’s action attracted condemnation from many Nigerians on social media. Read more
Market leaders champion containment of coronavirus spread in Trade Fair (Vanguard)
Market leaders in Trade Fair Complex, along the Mile Two- Badagry expressway, Lagos, have put up precautionary measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus Disease into the market.
They have also, called on Police authorities to accord them the right to arrest traders who failed to carry out stipulated directives towards achieving the aim.
The call is coming on the heels of complaints that some of the traders at the Balogun wing of the market failed to obey directives on the provision of water and soap for customers to wash their hands before entering the plaza. Read more
Police search for killers of ex-Ondo governor’s son (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the murder of Muyiwa Opaleye, the son of a former military administrator of Ondo State, Brig.Gen. Ekundayo Opaleye.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the killers of the victim would be brought to book.
The 40-year-old Muyiwa, who lived in Victoria Island, Lagos, was reported to have been trailed to a joint at Aguda, Surulere, where he was hanging out with some friends.
The assailants, said to be about four in number, reportedly arrived in the area in a Sport Utility Vehicle, which they parked on an adjoining street.
The men then went for the victim in the crowd, as they rained bullets on him. Read more

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised Chief Dele Momodu on his 60th birthday, describing the occasion as momentous for a man who has dedicated his life to the celebration of Africans through his profession.

Three die of COVID-19 in Lagos (Punch)
Lagos State has recorded 179 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total confirmed infections in the state to 2, 278.
Three more patients also died from coronavirus-related complications in the state, The PUNCH reports.
This was announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Saturday in its COVID-19 Situation report 77.
According to the NCDC, 288 infections were recorded in 15 states in the past 24 hours. Read more
COVID-19: Unilag produces Ambuvalent ventilator (Nation)
In a bid to further tackle the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a team of researchers in the University of Lagos (Unilag) has produced an Ambuvalent ventilator.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project, known as Unilag /LASRIC Ambuvalent, was sponsored by the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC).
The team carried out a ‘demonstration of concept’ of the project to the institution’s management on Friday. Read more
Buhari receives Madagascar COVID-19 herbal drug from Guinea Bissau’s President (ThisDay)

President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday received samples of the Madagascar herbal drug which the African country claimed could cure COVID-19.
The drug was delivered to Buhari by President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau at the State House, Abuja.
Disclosing this in a statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu, said Buhari however said he would listen to science before allowing traditional or any new medicines to be administered on Nigerians.
“At an audience meeting with President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau who brought along with him the samples of the traditional medicine as shared to African nations by Madagascar, President Buhari said his position on all such herbal or traditional medicinal postulates had remained the same. Scores feared killed in Adamawa communal conflict (Guardian)
Scores of persons are feared killed in a communal conflict in Tigno town of Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Mr Samuel Danga and Usman Babale, both residents of the area, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Yola that the incident sparked off by misunderstanding between two youths.
They told NAN that many people lost their lives from gunshots while several houses, shops and filling stations were destroyed. Read more
Félicien Kabuga: Rwanda genocide suspect arrested in France (BBC)
Félicien Kabuga, one of the most wanted suspects in the Rwandan genocide, has been arrested near Paris, the French justice ministry has announced.
Mr Kabuga was detained by gendarmes in Asnières-sur-Seine, where he had been living under a false identity.
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda has charged the 84-year-old with genocide and crimes against humanity.
He is alleged to have been the main financier of the ethnic Hutu extremists who slaughtered 800,000 people in 1994. Read more

Senior British Airways cabin crew have been left ‘appalled’ after facing up to a 55% pay cut under a proposed new contract, it is claimed. A letter received by staff on Friday reportedly sets out controversial new terms and conditions, after the coronavirus pandemic left the aviation industry in tatters. Unions are said to have threatened legal action and staff are planning on striking, according to The Sun. The new pay rate would allegedly see the salaries of entry-level junior team members plummet to £24,000, while it remains unknown what salary other staff are being asked to accept. Most senior crew – customer service managers – are currently on around £35,000, while some crew leaders – customer service directors – can earn up to £80,000 per year. Read more
Over 21,700 people volunteer for Covid-19 vaccine “challenge trial” (DailyTrust)
More than 21,700 people have volunteered to be exposed to the coronavirus to speed up vaccine development. By Saturday, a total 21,729 people from 102 countries had signed up on 1DaySooner for the Covid-19 human challenge trial, or HCT. Human challenge trials deliberately expose participants to infection, in order to study diseases and test vaccines or treatments, explained the site. Such trials have been used for influenza, malaria, typhoid, dengue fever, and cholera. Read more
Combative, naked man arrested in connection with Harlem murder and fire (NYPost)
A fiery Harlem homicide scene came with an extra surprise for first responders: a crazed, naked guy guarding the door, police said.
The 31-year-old nude dude was blocking the path of cops and firefighters who arrived at 409 East 120th St. around 4:20 a.m. to find a man with multiple stab wounds inside apartment 9G, which had been set ablaze, authorities said.
Video footage obtained by The Post shows a muscular, completely naked white man with tattooed buttocks and a bloodied face being carried from the building face down by a crew of uniformed cops and firefighters, as a crowd gathers on the sidewalk and fire truck lights flash in the background.
“He started the fire! He tried to kill all of us here!” a woman says in the video as the man, who says nothing, is strapped onto a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. Read more
JC Penney: US department store files for bankruptcy (BBC)
American department store JC Penney has filed for bankruptcy becoming the latest company to be hit by Covid-19.
The 118-year-old store sells clothing, cosmetics and jewellery at over 850 locations across the country. It employs more than 80,000 people.
It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Friday allowing it to restructure even though it can no longer pay its debts.
JC Penney’s announcement comes after J Crew filed for bankruptcy last month. Read more

French President Emmanuel Macron was met with an angry reception when he came to visit the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in Paris this Friday.
Talking to the healthcare staff, he told them not to let “good energy fall and despair set in,” but the morale-raising jibe didn’t play well with some of the nurses listening.

Club Brugge formally declared Belgian champions (Nation)
Club Brugge were formally declared Belgian champions on Friday after the country’s Pro League confirmed last month’s decision to bring the season to a premature end in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Brugge had a runaway 15-point lead with one match left in the regular season and will take up an automatic spot in next season’s Champions League group phase.
Belgium was the first country in Europe to end its soccer season just weeks after its suspension in mid-March, but that decision made by the Pro League board still had to be ratified by the clubs, who did so at Friday’s general assembly. Read more
