Police launch manhunt for killers of Lagos chief (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command said it had begun an investigation into the killing of the Baale of Lotu community, Chief Fatai Jubril, who was reportedly murdered in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State on Saturday over a land dispute.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, while confirming the incident in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, said the police had launched a manhunt for the suspected killers.

Hundeyin said, “On July 15, it was reported that around 12 noon, one Chief Omotola Adeboyejo, the Baale of Museyo town, led some thugs numbering about 40 and accosted his younger brother, one Chief Fatai Jubril aged 43 years, the Baale of Lotu community, and took him to a disputed land at Museyo, ordered him to be handcuffed by yet-to-be-identified men in mufti which he resisted and led to a crisis. Police arraign 6 men for threat to life (Punch)

Six men, on Tuesday, appeared before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court sitting in Tinubu, over an alleged threat to life.

The men are Sunday Olabayo, Lawal Adefemi, Gbenga Demurin, Idowu Mujaheed, Samsudeen Oluwo and Dare Majekodunmi.

The defendants are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, threat to life and possession of dangerous weapons, and wilful damage. 

The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 8, 2023. Read more

Security guards in court for stealing from employer (Punch)

The Police on Tuesday arraigned four security guards, Agber Nelson, Tombuwua James, Shima Geofrey and Okunomo Adeshola before a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Tinubu, Lagos Island for allegedly stealing 64 pieces of pipes from their employer.

The defendants are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing preferred against them.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ajaga Agboko, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 10, 2023, around 8pm. Read more

Lagos police seize N13m Indian hemp (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has intercepted substances suspected to be Indian hemp worth N13m from two men along Mushin, Isolo Road in the Isolo area of Lagos State.

According to a statement on Monday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the illicit drugs were conveyed by Fidelis Otiga, 49 and Chukwuma Kennedy, 50, in a Toyota Sienna car with number plate KJA 118 HV last Wednesday.

He said the items were recovered at midnight when they were stopped by policemen from the Aswani Police Division during a routine stop-and-search on the road. Read more

I mistakenly stabbed my girlfriend to death, socialite Killaboigram confesses (Punch)

A Lagos socialite simply identified as Benjamin Best AKA Killaboigram, has taken to social media to confess to murdering his girlfriend.

According to the Killaboigram, he and the deceased, simply identified as Austa_XXO on Instagram, got into a heated argument that saw him eventually stabbing her to death before fleeing the scene.

Killaboigram took to his Instagram page on Monday, confessing to the crime and sharing details of the terrible act. According to him, he has been battling with suicidal thoughts ever since the incident happened and can no longer live with himself, hence his confession. Read more

Court remands man for smuggling firearms (Punch)

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday remanded 61-year-old Joseph Nwadiador who allegedly smuggled firearms into Nigeria, in the custody of the Nigerian Customs Service.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo made the remand order when he granted the request of the NCS to remand him pending the conclusion of the investigation of the offence.

NCS alleged that the defendant, a resident of 5th Avenue, G Close, Block 4, Flat 2, Festac Town, Lagos, had in June, smuggled some rifles and ammunition into the country from the United States of America. Read more

Peacemaker shot dead at Lagos night club (Punch)

A man, Kehinde Adesanwo, on Friday night, lost his life while trying to settle a quarrel at a Lagos night club.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Adesanwo died at a nightclub located on Shiro Street, in the Fadeyi area of Lagos.

He was said to have been shot in the stomach by a yet-to-be-identified man.

Our correspondent learnt that trouble started at the bar around 9pm when the unidentified assailant refused to pay his bill of N52,000. Read more

Lagos cultists kill victim, police rescue suspects from mob (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday said its men arrested 27 suspects engaged in different crimes, including armed robbery, murder, and cultism.

The state Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja, on Friday, said arms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.

He said, “Before you today we have a total of 27 suspects who engaged in varying crimes including armed robbery, murder, cultism, vandalisation, etc.

“From all these cases, which we successfully cracked, we recovered a total of six arms, 12 live ammunition, one knife, two motorcycles, one vehicle, and SIM cards.” Read more

2 arrested for attacking Lagos man with machete (Punch)

Two men were on Wednesday arraigned before the Chief Magistrates’ Court 4 sitting in the Yaba area of Lagos State for allegedly assaulting and macheting the left hand of a man identified as Ali Yaga at Elepete, the Ibeju Lekki area of the state.

The two defendants, Suraju Azeez, 37, and Opeyemi Kabiru, 24, were arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command before Magistrate O.A Salawu.

The prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendants and others at large carried out the act on June 14, 2023, around 5am in the Elepete, Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos. Read more

Auto dealer in court for car theft (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a 56-year-old man, Remi Akinlami, for allegedly stealing a car worth N3.2m, property of Festus Ojabor, in the Egbeda area of the state.

The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate O.A Salawu on July 10, 2023, in the Yaba Magistrates’ Court 4, on two counts of pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, said the defendant committed the offence in 2010, at Gowon Estate, in the Egbeda area of the state; adding that he acquired an unregistered car from the complainant under the pretence to help him sell it but, did not remit the money to the owner of the car, after selling it without the original documents. Council boss orders vigilantes arrest over colleague’s death (Punch)

The Chairman of the Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, John Ogundare, has said he was instrumental in the arrest of the leader of the Digbolukolu Local Security Outfit, Olaide Taofik, and other members of the security outfit linked to the death of one of their colleagues, identified simply as Ezekiel, aka Baba Malu.

Ogundare made the statement on Wednesday in response to reports that he facilitated the release of the suspects after their arrest.

The council boss said he handed the suspects to the police, adding that when members of the community bailed them, policemen from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, re-arrested the suspects. Read more

Lagos bizman circulating ex-lovers’ nude photos arraigned, gets bail (Punch)

A businessman, Amarah Kennedy, who was accused of circulating nude photos of his former lovers was on Wednesday arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court, in Ogba, Lagos.

Kennedy was arraigned on six counts of provocation, unlawful conversion of funds and publication of nudes on social media without the consent of the persons.

The charge read in part, “That you, Amarah Kennedy, sometime in September 2022, in a hotel, at Olodi Apapa, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, insulted, annoyed, disgraced and/or provoke one (names withheld) without her consent did share her nude in the social media and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24 of the Cybercrime Stalking (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2015. Drug addict arrested for stabbing Lagos cleric to death (Punch)

A 30-year-old man identified simply as David, who is said to be under the influence of hard drugs, has allegedly stabbed a cleric, Akeem Ojiwusi, to death around Odekeye close, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that David was fond of committing different crimes whenever he got intoxicated and his actions usually put him at loggerheads with his neighbours.

On the fateful day the crime was committed, Ojiwusi’s relative, who identified himself simply as Sefiu, said he was at home when the cleric sent him to buy some drugs for his treatment. Read more

Wildlife trafficking: 3 Vietnamese, 1 Cameroonian jailed 6 years (Nation)

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Thursday sentenced four foreigners to six years imprisonment for wildlife trafficking.

The convicts are three Vietnamese – Phan Viet Chi, Phan Hong Quan and Duong Van Thang – and a Cameroonian, Mory Berrette.

Justice Yelim Bogoro convicted the four following their plea of “guilty” to an amended four-count charge, after they entered a plea bargain agreement with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). Read more

EFCC: N329.5b, $3.2m investment, forex, email scams recorded in Lagos (Nation)

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has identified investment, Business Email Compromise, (BEC), forex scams as well as land and property fraud as some of the most prevalent financial and economic crimes in its Lagos Zonal Command. EFCC Acting Chairman Abdulkarim Chukkol said the Lagos Command had received 1,388 petitions relating to these scams, involving the sums of N317, 908,343,469,  $3,205, 648, and N11,686,499,431.79.

He made the disclosure during a one-day workshop on Economic and Financial Crimes Reporting for Journalists on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the Commission’s Lagos Zonal Command.

Chukkol, who spoke through the Commander, Lagos Zonal Command, Michael Wetkas, said all manner of economic and financial crimes had, over the years, continued to thrive in the state owing to its status as the economic nerve centre of the country. Read more

Court fixes Nov 14 for adoption of final address in Ikuforiji’s trial (Channels)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed November 14, for the adoption of final written addresses in the trial of a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, on allegations of laundering over N338.8m.

Justice Mohammed Liman adjourned for the adoption of written addresses after the defendant’s counsel tendered the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the court proceedings of 2014 before the previous trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, signalling the close of its defence.

The counsel to the defendant, Dele Adesina, SAN, also recalled a witness, the former chief accountant of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Adewale Olatunji, through whom he tendered the CTCs of the 2014 proceedings. Read more
