Many trapped, 2 rescued as another 3-storey building collapses in Lagos (Leadership)

Several persons were, on Friday, trapped after a three-storey building on Sonuga Street, Palm Avenue, Mushin in Lagos, collapsed.

According to the Lagos Territorial Office Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, he said two persons have been rescued from the collapsed building so far.

According to him, search and rescue operations were ongoing at press time.

He said, “A 3-Storey building has collapsed at Oye Sonuga Street, opposite Oye Roundabout, Isolo Road, Mushin. An adult and a child have been rescued alive and search and rescue operations are ongoing.” Read more 

Lagos PPRO disguises, policeman asks him ‘for something’ (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, carried out a social experiment by disguising as a civilian and driving at about 11:50 pm through police checkpoints.

Hundeyin said he passed through the first and second checkpoints, adding that his “papers weren’t even asked for.”

Hundeyin attempted to stress how to relate with police officers on the road in a polite manner, saying “respect is reciprocal”, adding that people should not be unnecessarily aggressive, as he was passed at a checkpoint after he smiled.

Hundeyin shared his road experience with the police via his verified Twitter handle, late Thursday, where he revealed that police officers asked him to give them “something.” Read more 

MI Abaga marries the love of his life Eniola Mafe (Guardian)

Popular rapper and music producer, Jude Lemfani Abaga, better known by his stage name M.I Abaga, recently married Eniola Mafe in a public ceremony.

On September 22, 2022, a traditional wedding ceremony was held for the pair in Lagos.

Following the celebration, a video of the occasion went viral online, showing the music singer and his wife looking stunning in their traditional attire.

Leadership crisis hits Lagos Arewa community, as members call for sack of commissioner (Sun)

The current leadership crisis rocking the Arewa community in Lagos State has polarized it into factions, while some members were already calling for the sack of the state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Kabiru Ahmed Abdullahi.

Abdullahi is the only Hausa in the state  Executive Council led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu but some members of the community in the state who were calling for his sack accused him of intolerance, selfishness, greediness, arrogance and failure to promote and protect interest of his kinsmen.

The agitation for the sack of Abdullahi became public discussion during the week, with two different protests being staged at the State House of Assembly, while a faction is calling for his sack, the other is pledging their support for the commissioner. Read more

What Lagos must do to attain good governance, by stakeholders (Nation)

Stakeholders have praised Lagos State for its commitment to resilient initiatives, which help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

They, however, urged the government to strengthen its urban renewal, housing, transportation and sanitation policies to help it meet the 21st century requirements for good governance.

The stakeholders spoke at a resilience forum held in Ikeja to evaluate the state’s resilience initiatives towards meeting the 21st century governance demand.

The forum, the first of its kind, was also to review the implementation of the Lagos Resilience Strategy (LRS-2020), and identify new opportunities to be integrated in the resilience agenda. Read more

Nigerian singer, Ruger has announced via his Instagram story that he has given his life to Christ in preparation for the release of his debut album.

The “Bounce” crooner said he confessed a lot on the album after he underwent what he described as a deliverance service at Tabernacle Christian Centre.

This is, however, surprising because Ruger’s songs are not considered to be Christ-like.

Afriland Properties shareholders endorse N0.10 dividend payout (ThisDay)

The shareholders of Afriland Properties Plc have approved a N0.10 dividend payout by the management of the company, translating to N137.39 million return on investment for 2021 financial year. The company had paid N0.50 kobo per share dividend in the 2020 financial year.

TGI Distri gives to charity on 5th anniversary (Sun)

As part of activities to mark its 5th year anniversary, leading food brand distributor, TGI Distri Limited recently paid visits to SOS Children’s Village and Bethesda Home for the Blind in Lagos. Future issues cryptic response to criticism over sale of his music catalogue (HipHopDX)

Future has cryptically replied to criticism he’s received in the wake of selling off his publishing catalogue for an eight-figure payday.

Reports emerged on Tuesday (September 20) that King Pluto had sold a huge chunk of his publishing catalogue from 2004 to 2020, comprised of over 612 songs that included hits like “Life Is Good” and “Jumpman” with Drake, “King’s Dead” with Kendrick Lamar, “Selfish” with Rihanna, “Low Life” with The Weeknd and “Mask Off.” 

The deal was made with Influence Media Partners, and Future said he was “proud” to be handing off some of his “most precious artwork” to Influence Media.

“I put everything into my music, and I wanted to make sure these were in good hands as I thought about the next chapter of these songs,” Future said in a statement. “I’m proud to partner up with Rene and the team at Influence Media and send a signal that this music has timeless value. My music is my art, and these songs represent some of the most precious artwork of my career.” Read more

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has admitted he wasn’t a fan of No Time To Die.

Brosnan, who played the 007 agent from 1995 to 2002, was recently asked about the future of the Bond franchise in light of Daniel Craig retiring after recently playing the role in No Time To Die for the final time.

Discussing which films in the franchise he had recently seen, Brosnan told GQ: “I saw the last one and I saw Skyfall. I love Skyfall.

“I’m not too sure about the last one,” he added of “No Time To Die”, leaving the end of his sentence unfinished. “Daniel always gives of his heart. Very courageous, very strong. But…” Read more

Saoirse Ronan to star in World War II epic ‘Blitz’ for Apple TV+ (UPI)

Atonement, Brooklyn and Little Women star Saoirse Ronan has signed on to star in Steve McQueen’s World War II drama Blitz.

Production on the New Regency and Apple TV+ film is set to begin later this year.

It is based on an original idea from writer-director McQueen.

McQueen previously worked with production company New Regency on his celebrated films, 12 Years a Slave and Widows. Read more

Riverdale actor Ryan Grantham gets life in prison for killing his mother (BBC)

US actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his mother, Barbara Waite, in 2020.

The 24-year-old, who played Jeffery Augustine in teen drama Riverdale, was sentenced at British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, after having initially been charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said he had also plotted to kill Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Grantham admitted to shooting his mother in the back of the head as she played piano in their home, north of Vancouver, the court heard. Read more

Singer-songwriter Jessie Baylin has had the same phone number since she was 14.

Though life has taken her from New York City to Los Angeles to Nashville, where she lives now with her husband, Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill, her three-digit area code is a constant reminder that her roots are elsewhere: New Jersey.

It was there that she was raised in a restaurant family in Gillette, busing tables as early as 12, and listening as her mom and dad played her artists like Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Barbra Streisand and Billie Holiday.

Questlove to executive produce J Dilla documentary ‘Dilla Time’ (Vibe)

A feature documentary on the life of late rap legend J Dilla is currently in the works and will be executive produced by Questlove.

Titled Dilla Time, the project will be released under Questlove’s Two One Five Entertainment and has the full support of the late producer’s estate, which released a statement in conjunction with the news.

“The estate of James Dewitt Yancey, and its wholly-owned production entity, Pay Jay Productions, Inc., which benefits J Dilla’s two children, his younger brother, and his mother, is proud to give its blessing to an amazing project created by discerning and talented filmmakers who knew J Dilla. Cameroon military acknowledges troops killed mothers (VOA)

Cameroon’s military says three members of its airborne battalion this week attacked civilians and killed two mothers in Nylbat, an English-speaking village in Andeck district.

A statement signed Wednesday by military spokesperson Serge Cyrille Atongfack says the troops were dispatched to fight separatists in the troubled Northwest region.

The troops violated orders from military hierarchy and started shooting indiscriminately on civilians, the military says, adding that one shooter killed two harmless mothers.

The government says family members of the killed mothers rushed to the scene and collected corpses when the government troops left. Read more

In an emotional statement, in response to the racist abuses, Vinicius vowed to continue with his dance.

“They say that happiness bothers. The happiness of a black Brazilian being successful in Europe bothers much more.

“But my will to win, my smile and the sparkle in my eyes are much bigger than that. Don’t even try to imagine how much.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will miss Nigeria’s international friendly with Algeria on September 27 after picking an injury in training on Wednesday.

Ndidi arrived at the Super Eagles training in Constantine earlier this week alongside his international teammates ahead of the meeting with the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner but copped a knock during training and will no longer participate in the encounter, returning to England to evaluate the injury.

Australia won’t have Guus Hiddink on board at World Cup – Graham Arnold (ESPN)

Australia coach Graham Arnold said Guus Hiddink’s stint as his assistant during the 1-0 win over New Zealand in Brisbane on Thursday was a one-off and the Dutchman will not be working alongside him at the World Cup finals in Qatar.

Hiddink, an icon in Australia after qualifying the nation for the World Cup in 2006 to break a 32-year finals absence, sat on the bench for the victory in the Socceroos’ final game in front of their own fans before November’s tournament.

The 75-year-old former Netherlands and Real Madrid coach filled in for regular assistant Rene Meulensteen as part of centenary celebrations for Australia’s first international and Arnold stressed that would be the limit of his involvement.

Manchester United suffer annual loss as wage bill rockets to €440m (IrishIndependent)

Manchester United have revealed a Premier League record wage bill of €440million (£384m) for last season, despite failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return, plus the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, contributed to the highest salary listed in a club’s accounts, more than the €440m by Manchester City from 2021.

Ronaldo wanted to leave in the summer and is on a 25pc reduction, along with other members of the squad, after they failed to finish in the top four.

United are counting the cost of last season’s failures, with €28m paid out following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick’s short spell as interim. Rangnick’s two-year deal as a consultant for United was cut short when he became Austria national manager. Read more

Angry Medvedev mocks fans in Metz during loss to Wawrinka (StraitsTimes)

Daniil Medvedev angrily mocked a section of French fans who booed him for throwing his racket during a three-set defeat by Stan Wawrinka at the Moselle Open in Metz on Thursday.

Wawrinka secured a 6-4 6-7(7) 6-3 victory to reach the quarter-finals but not before he had attempted to pacify top seed Medvedev, who also made a gesture to suggest the crowd were crazy.

Russian Medvedev lost his composure after going down 2-0 in the deciding set and sent his racket bouncing off the court, leading to some fans expressing their displeasure by booing.

The 26-year-old world number four responded by giving the crowd two thumbs down and went on to mock their jeering, which only grew louder as more spectators joined in. Read more
