Lagos mechanic defiles neighbour’s 8-year-old daughter (Punch)

A mechanic, identified simply as Ejike, has been accused of defiling the eight-year-old daughter of his neighbour at his residence on Abule Oke Street, in the Ayobo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim and her mother were at home when the mother, while preparing to get something outside, heard Ejike’s wife calling her daughter to assist her in doing some domestic chores at their flat.

The victim’s mother said she did not oppose her neighbour’s request, adding that her daughter was not just assisting them in doing their domestic chores. Read more

Drug addict arrested for stabbing Lagos cleric to death (Punch)

A 30-year-old man identified simply as David, who is said to be under the influence of hard drugs, has allegedly stabbed a cleric, Akeem Ojiwusi, to death around Odekeye close, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that David was fond of committing different crimes whenever he got intoxicated and his actions usually put him at loggerheads with his neighbours.

On the fateful day the crime was committed, Ojiwusi’s relative, who identified himself simply as Sefiu, said he was at home when the cleric sent him to buy some drugs for his treatment. Read more

Worker to die by hanging for killing Lagos hotelier, manager (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court sitting in the Ikeja area of the state, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a former hotel worker, Jeffrey Ehizojie, to death by hanging for killing the owner of Etashol and Suites Hotel, Olusola Olusoga, and the manager of the hotel, Tunji Omikunle, in the Ojodu Berger area of the state.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala found Ehizojie, 30, guilty of beating and strangulating Olusoga.

Ogala held that the prosecution proved the two-count charge of murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

In her judgment, the judge held that the crux of the case of the prosecution was premised upon the confessional statement of the convict as well as circumstantial evidence. Read more

Lagos airport runway light stolen, 7 suspended (Punch)

Unknown persons have allegedly carted away the recently reinstalled airfield lighting systems at the domestic runway 18r/36L of Murtala Muhammad Airport.

The PUNCH gathered that the disappearance of the approach lighting systems had raised security concerns in Nigeria’s busiest airports.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, those who carted away the lighting systems took advantage of the closure of the runway for over three months. Read more

5 suspects nabbed during cult initiation in Lagos hotel (Punch)

Policemen attached to the Tolu Division of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested five suspected cult members during initiation in the Ajegunle area of the state.

The suspects include Peter Odumola, 19, Promise Benjamin, 20, Emmanuel Ikechuckwu, 19, Richards Adu, 18, and Abdullahi Nasiru, 20.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the arrest followed a distress call received by the Divisional Police Officer, Tolu Division, that some suspected cultists were forcefully initiating a new member in a hotel in the area. Read more

Lagos driver bags life jail for raping employer’s granddaughter (Punch)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos State, on Monday, sentenced a 56-year-old driver, Folarin Rauf, to life imprisonment for defiling his employer’s five-year-old granddaughter in the state.

Justice Abiola Soladoye handed down the sentence after finding the convict guilty of the offence of defilement.

Rauf was arraigned on November 30, 2021, on one count of defilement and he pleaded not guilty. Read more

Lagos vigilantes torture colleague to death over phone (Punch)

A member of the Digbolukolu Local Security Outfit identified simply as Ezekiel, aka Baba Malu, has been tortured to death by his colleagues on the premises of the Langbasa Health Centre in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that members of the security outfit established by the Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area accused Ezekiel of stealing a phone during an event members of the outfit attended in the community on Monday, June 26, 2023.

In an effort to reprimand him, the leader of the security outfit, Olaide Taofik, reportedly ordered members of the outfit to tie Ezekiel and beat him up in the guardroom of the security outfit on the premises of the Langbasa Health Centre. Read more

Lagos debtor arraigned for issuing fake cheque to creditor (Punch)

A 31-year-old debtor, Musa Ayeni, was on Thursday, arraigned before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, Lagos State, for allegedly owing one Awosola Olusola, N1.7m, and for issuing him a fake bank cheque in the Shomolu area of the state.

The Lagos State Police Command arraigned Ayeni on three counts of obtaining money under false pretence and issuing of fake cheque.

According to the prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the defendant, knowing that there was no money in his account, issued a fake cheque of about N2m to the complainant, an amount higher than what he owed. Read more

Lagos robbers escape from prison, say warder received N1m bribe (Punch)

A warder attached to the Kirikiri Custodial Centre, Lagos State, Kayode Fatombi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly aiding the escape of some prison inmates.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that three men were arrested by the police for alleged robbery and kidnapping.

They were subsequently arraigned before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.

A source said two of the inmates escaped after the warder led them out on the pretext of taking them somewhere. Read more

Vandals flee as Lagos police foil oil theft (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Saturday said its operatives foiled an attempt by pipeline vandals to scoop crude oil at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline at Idimu in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement, said the incident happened around 2 am on Saturday when the hoodlums accessed the site to siphon the PMS into their tanker.

He added that the suspects took to their heels and abandoned their vehicle and equipment after sighting the men from the command. Read more

Arrest: How widow lured Lagos bizman circulating ex-lovers’ nudes (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 44-year-old businessman, Amara Kennedy, for circulating nude photos of his former lovers.

Kennedy was arrested on Friday in the Oshodi area of the state after one of his victims, Kester, agreed to meet him under the pretext of resolving their disagreement.

Bloody street fight at the Ajegunle area of Lagos State was weekend quelled by police operatives who also arrested two suspects.

It was gathered that a fight broke out between Aroworade and Olaleye street boys on Friday evening which caused panic among residents.

Videos of the fight that later circulated on social media, showed the thugs, armed with bottles, sticks and other dangerous weapons, attacking each other. Read more

Police record 111 defilement cases in 3 months in Lagos (Nation)

The Nigeria Police, Lagos State Command, says it has recorded 111 defilement cases between April and June, 2023.

The command’s Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Hundeyin said that the command was concerned about the increasing number of defilement cases in the state. Read more

Alleged terrorism: Lagos prepares witnesses against Eze Ndigbo (Nation)

The Lagos State Government yesterday told the High Court at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) that it had witnesses to defend its terrorism claim against the “Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate”, Frederick Nwajagu.

Nwajagu, 67, was arrested in April by the Department of State Services (DSS) following a viral video allegedly implicating him in what was alleged a terror-related offence.

The video allegedly showed him threatening to invite members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Lagos to secure the properties of Igbo people in the state. Read more
