Meet some of the most generous people dead or alive (DailyRecord)

It comes after a billionaire paid off $31m worth of student debt to over 400 college graduates in America.

It’s an American dream come true.

Billionaire Robert F Smith made a speech after he was given an honorary doctorate from Morehouse College in Atlanta.

In it, he told students he was going to write off the loans of every one of the class of 2019.

The tech investor paid out $40 million to make sure 400 seniors walked away without heavy debts.

He’s not the only big spender who has put their hand in their pocket to help others.

Here are 10 more examples of stupendous generosity:

1 In Ringmer in Sussex, rents of £1000 a month are the norm.

Ian Askew supported friends and charities while he was alive.

He signed his home over to a charity for people with learning difficulties. In 1977 he gave two houses to the local council, to be rented to local families for £100 a month.

They are still there years after his death, although the rent has gone up to £300. Families can rent them for three years at a time and many use the time to save for a deposit.

2 Rapper Drake is a generous guy, always ready to help out a struggling family or a small charity that comes to his attention.

In 2013 he invited students from Strawberry Mansion high school in Philadelphia to come to one of his shows.

When he found out that there were no music facilities at the school, he donated $75,000 to build them a recording studio.

3 Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, donated $33m to a charity called TheDream.us.

It funds education for “dreamers”, young people born in the US whose parents were illegal immigrants.

They are not eligible for any government support to go to college. Read more
