5 men in court over alleged theft of spirits, wine worth N20m (Vanguard)

Five men on Tuesday appeared in a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos State over alleged theft of exotic spirits and wine worth N20 million, belonging to their employer.

The police charged Micheal Akor, 28, James Akor, 23, Lawrence Naanban, 30, Isaac Zafaniah, 20, and Isaac Dauda, 20, with conspiracy and theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendants committed the offense sometime in March, at No. 10, Emma Abimbola Cole st., Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

She alleged that the defendants stole some cartons of Hennessy XO, Moët & Chandon champagne, Jameson wine, and Baileys, worth N20 million. Read more

Lagos Police Nab ‘Ijora Badia Most Wanted Cultist’ (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State Police Command announced on Monday that it had arrested a suspected cultist, Muritala Ahmed, who it described as “one of the deadliest cult gang members” in the Ijora-Badia area of the state.

The police said Ahmed, 22, had been on its “most wanted list” over numerous killings and violence in the Ijora and Orile-Igamu areas.

The Command told Daily Trust that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested the suspect, said to be widely known as “Terror” in cult circles, three weeks ago, along with six suspected members of his gang.

The identities of the other arrested suspects were given as Saheed Idris, 28; Sunday Ifelowo, 28; Adams Babatunde, 32; Akeem Ajibola, 32; Jamiu Balogun, 24, and Sodiq Balogun, 22.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the suspects were arrested under the bridge at Ijora Badia allegedly causing a breach of the peace, smashing windscreens of innocent motorists and robbing them of cash, phones and other valuables. Read more

Navy arrests more ratings who tortured peacemaker to death in Lagos (Punch)

The Nigerian Navy has apprehended four accomplices of a rating, Awosanya Olufemi, who were involved in the alleged torture and killing of a peacemaker, Collins Osagie.

A spokesperson for the Western Navy Command, Thomas Otuji, told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.

Olufemi had bought an electrical item worth N250 from a trader, Cletus Ben-Onyejimbe, in Ishashi, Okokomaiko area of Lagos, which he later returned.

There was a disagreement when the trader refused to take the item back or return the money.

The rating then called eight of his colleagues, who reportedly beat up Osagie after the trader disappeared from the scene. Read more

Businessman in court over alleged N1.13m fraud (Vanguard)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, granted N200,000 bail to a 40-year-old businessman, Afolabi Adebayo, who is facing a trial over an alleged N1.13 million fraud.

The defendant, whose house address was not given, is facing charges of obtaining by false pretense and theft of N1.13 million from a housewife.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Victor Eruada, told the court that the defendant committed the offense sometime in July 2020 in Ojota area of Lagos State.

Eruada said that the defendant obtained N1.13 million from the complainant, Mrs Adeola Odeola, under the false pretext of investing the money on her behalf, in the motorcycle business. Read more

Thugs invade monarch’s palace in Ikorodu, shoots sporadically (Guardian)

Suspected hoodlums and land grabbers on Sunday invaded Isiu palace in Ikorodu, Lagos State in a failed attempt to abduct the newly-installed monarch, Oba Olukayode Raji. The thugs shot sporadically at the palace.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the monarch was given the staff of office by the Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties, Wale Ahmed, on August 24, 2020.

The monarch told NAN that the hoodlums came in dozens with dangerous weapons before the intervention of local vigilante groups that averted their plot and chased them away.

Oba Raji said: “Suddenly, we started seeing strange faces and many boys coming closer to the palace with different weapons in their hands.

“While they moved closer, they started shooting. One of my sons was wounded in the process. My house, my car and many people who came to pay homage to me were also wounded. More than 60 people were shot.

“Those who sustained serious injuries have been taken to the hospital for treatment.” Read more

Residents rescue boy from abuse, hand over suspect to police (Guardian)

Residents of Union Estate in Ilamoshe, Oke-Afa, Ejigbo area of Lagos, at the weekend, rescued an 11-year-old boy from persistent child abuse and human rights violation meted out to him by his guardians.

Briefing residents yesterday, the Public Relations Officer of the estate, Chris Santus, disclosed that the incident happened in Arochukwu Street.

He said: “Our security men at the Arochukwu gate found a boy of about 11 years crying and shivering at the gate. His body was brutalized badly. On interrogating the boy, he said the woman he was staying with used a mopping stick on him. As if that was not enough, she went out to get a cable to use on him, at this point he had to run for hiding at Arochukwu security post where the security man on guard saw him and raised alarm.

“This was brought to the attention of some of our executives. They waded into the case and found the need to report the case immediately to the police. The police took over the case by arresting the culprit, Mrs Igwe.” Read more

Curfew: Police detain Lagos doctor as pregnant woman, baby die (Punch)

The life of a pregnant woman may have been saved if the doctor that was to operate on her was not allegedly held by policemen enforcing the COVID-19 lockdown on the Airport Road, Ikeja, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the surgeon was held for about one hour, as entreaties that she was on an emergency call, fell on deaf ears.

After she was released, the doctor reportedly got to the hospital and discovered that both mother and baby were died.

Our correspondent was told that the incident happened on Monday, August 31 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Surulere.

The deceased was identified only as Mistura. Read more

Fallen containers: FRSC impounds 208 trucks in Lagos (Punch)

Lagos State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogungbemide, has said the command made 368 arrests over trucks with unlatched containers in the last two weeks.

Ogungbemide told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday during his visit to the Badagry Unit of FRSC.

He said that the command had set up three different enforcement interventions to curb the menace of unlatched container truckers on the road.

“Operation Scorpion was set up to check the menace of the unlatched container trucks that are falling in Lagos metropolis.

“In the first week, the Scorpion 11 arrested 218 trucks and impounded 208. Read more
