The picture of a decrepit political prisoner thoroughly emaciated and naked except for a cloth around his waist from Sudan has gone viral around the world. The prisoner was found in an underground prison in Omdurman, Sudan. Believed to be Colonel Ibrahim Chamsadine, former minister of state for defence, he was reportedly arrested by deposed President Oumar el Bashir.
Detained in an underground prison since 1995 as a result of his opposition to the government of Oumar el Bashir, the same government pronounced him dead in a plane crash on June 11, 2008 but provided no body to give closure for his family.
It turns out he had been imprisoned in a cell built under a mosque. And in the classic biblical King David taking over his lieutenant’s wife fashion, Oumar al-Bashir then reportedly forcefully married the former minister’s widow.
Thanks to the recent revolution in Sudan Chamsadine, or what is left of him, can now breathe the air of freedom.
The secret services have since confessed to the crimes of the regime casting no doubt that the man in the picture is indeed Chamsadine.
