Power shift: Your position unconstitutional, North governors reply South colleagues (Guardian)

It also said it is sub-judice to act on the controversial Value Added Tax (VAT) while the case between Rivers State and the Federal Government is before the Supreme Court but went ahead to offer its position.

On open grazing, it called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP).

2 new studies prove just how much plant-based eating is linked to longevity and heart health (Well+Good)

There’s no denying that plant-based eating is finally taking the nation by storm. (It seems like forever ago that the ketogenic diet and Paleo dominated every food convo, right?) Of course, just because something is popular certainly doesn’t mean it’s worth adopting. But this is one instance where doing so will benefit your health tremendously.

There’s already plenty of scientific evidence showing how plant-based eating directly benefits both short- and long-term health. (It’s a win for the environment, too.) But the confirmation just keeps coming. This month, not one but two new studies solidified the link between a plant-based diet and heart health as well as longevity.

Both published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the first study, titled “A Plant-Centered Diet and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease during Young to Middle Adulthood” took into account data from 4,946 people spanning from 1986 to 2016. Researchers found that plant-based eating was directly linked to a lowered risk of heart disease—which happens to be the number one cause of death in the U.S.

The second study focused specifically on postmenopausal women. Participants followed the portfolio diet, an eating plan that emphasizes plant proteins, soluble fiber, fruit, and monounsaturated fats. Similarly to the other study, researchers found that this way of eating was linked to better heart health. Together, these studies show that plant-based eating can benefit someone no matter what age they are. Keep reading to learn more about the studies straight from the researchers and see how you can apply the intel to your own life. Read more

Kevin Young’s latest poems are at play among the dead (NYTimes)

Poetry has long existed on the periphery of American life, but even outermost settlements have centers that are just a touch more hospitable, just a few miles closer to civilization. Kevin Young has long occupied a place in this desirable neighborhood. Young, who is 50, has won or been a finalist for a parade of major prizes; he’s been a guest editor for the yearly “Best American Poetry” series (when he was only 40); and he’s one of 15 chancellors at the Academy of American Poets. He’s also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Letters (there is perhaps a theme here). On top of that, Young is currently the poetry editor of The New Yorker, arguably the most important position an American poet can hold; soon he’ll presumably be named poet laureate, at which point he can shout “Bingo!”

There are many reasons for this star-spangled résumé, and most of them reflect well on Young. He’s a judicious editor (his edition of John Berryman’s “Selected Poems” is terrific), a nimble essayist (see the introduction to that same volume) and a responsible custodian of poetry’s limited public resources. Most of all, he’s often an excellent poet.

And he’s excellent in a very particular way. American poetry is at present a jumble of styles, but Young writes in an almost harmonic register. His work can be quirky and brainy, but it’s never alienating (he has a poem that’s literally about sweet potato pie). Read more

New Study Finds A Huge Perk Of Getting Vaccinated After Having COVID (HuffPost)

A new study shows people in high-transmission settings have high levels of protection if they’ve been vaccinated and had COVID-19.

A new study suggests the vaccine can provide a great benefit to those who have had COVID-19.

The research examined an incident where the delta variant tore through a Texas prison, infecting three-quarters of the incarcerated people there. Nearly 80% of those infected were fully vaccinated, most with the Pfizer shots. But while the new study shows that breakthrough cases can absolutely happen in high-risk settings like prisons and jails ― where it’s often impossible to maintain physical distance and where proper ventilation is a major concern ― it also contained some good news.

First, the COVID-19 vaccines largely prevented severe illness, even in the face of delta. Four of the 172 people who caught the coronavirus were hospitalized during the outbreak. Three were unvaccinated.

And by far the lowest attack rate was among fully vaccinated people who’d also been previously infected with COVID-19 — “highlighting the importance of vaccination, even among persons with previous infection,” argued the authors of the study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week. Matthew McConaughey will enter politics ‘in some capacity’ but says he’s more of a ‘poet-statesman’ (People)

Matthew McConaughey hasn’t decided to run for governor of Texas — yet — but says politics is definitely in his future in some form.

Amid the building buzz around McConaughey’s possible campaign, the Oscar-winning actor says in a new interview that while a political turn is imminent, it won’t define him.

“I’m measuring it,” the actor told the guys of Midland for an episode of the country band’s podcast Set It Straight: Myths and Legends. “Look, it’s going to be in some capacity. I’m more of a folk-singing, philosopher, poet-statesman than I am per-se definitive politician, so I go, ‘Well that’s a reason not to,’ and then I go, ‘No, that’s exactly why you should, because politics needs redefinition.’ “

Texans haven’t rejected the idea of McConaughey challenging Gov. Greg Abbott, who is up for reelection. One recent poll of 1,148 registered voters by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler found that McConaughey, 51, led Abbott by 9 points, with 44 percent of those polled saying they would vote for McConaughey while only 35 percent would vote for Abbott and 21 percent said they would vote for someone else. Bukayo Saka makes Arsenal trophies prediction after north London derby win  (Metro)

Bukayo Saka believes Arsenal are capable of challenging for trophies this season, if they can keep up the level of performance they produced in the north London derby on Sunday.

The Gunners were thoroughly impressive as they beat Tottenham 3-1 at the Emirates, although a woeful first half performance from Spurs helped them on their way to the three points.

Saka scored the third goal after Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had both netted in a superb opening half for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The second period was a quieter affair, but Arsenal saw out the win and picked up their third straight victory in the Premier League. Read more
