Mojisola Meranda becomes 1st female speaker following Obasa’s impeachment

The Lagos State House of Assembly elected Hon. Mojisola Meranda as its first female Speaker, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office on Monday,January 13, 2025.

Meranda, who represents the Apapa I Constituency and previously served as Deputy Speaker, was sworn in immediately after Obasa’s removal. In her inaugural address, she pledged to lead with transparency and integrity, aiming to restore public trust in the Assembly’s operations.

Obasa’s impeachment comes amid serious allegations, including the purported misappropriation of N17 billion for constructing a gate at the Assembly complex and the approval of N200 million for a thanksgiving event. These claims were brought forward by the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, which accused Obasa of financial mismanagement and abuse of office.

The former Speaker has denied these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated. Despite his defense, the Assembly proceeded with the impeachment, signaling a commitment to uphold accountability within its ranks.

Meranda’s historic appointment marks a significant milestone in Lagos State’s political landscape, reflecting a progressive shift towards inclusive governance. Her leadership is anticipated to usher in a new era of transparency and reform in the Assembly’s proceedings.
