The Lagos State Government has called on parents to monitor their children, during the long holiday, saying there is going to be an increase in the rate of child molestation, sexual abuse and rape. The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Agboola Dabiri, made the call on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting with owners of day care centres in the state in Ikeja. He said, “Some people are in the habit of using the school holiday period to perpetuate evil against schoolchildren; so beware.” Read more

Ambode congratulates ex-IG, Smith’s confirmation as chairman police service commission (Vanguard)

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday congratulated former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith on his confirmation as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission. Smith was confirmed by the Senate alongside six other members of the Commission on Tuesday, following the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented by the Chairman, Sen. Abu Ibrahim. Governor Ambode, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna described Smith’s confirmation by the Senate as a step in the right direction, adding that he would bring his wealth of experience to bear in reforming the Nigeria Police to be more effective, efficient and performance driven. 43 PHCs’ to benefit from Lagos new health initiative (Punch)

About 43 Primary Health Centres and 23 service providers have been chosen to benefit from the pilot phase of the access to finance and medical equipment leasing scheme of the Lagos State Government. This was disclosed during a sensitisation workshop on the new initiative held on Friday at Ikeja, Lagos State. In his keynote address, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, indicated that the initiative was needed to bring changes to healthcare delivery in the state. He said, “What we are doing here is in line with our state’s strategic health development plan. The major strategy under this plan is what we are here to address. One of it is leadership and governance and the need for us to exercise partnership in health. Read more

5,000 Undergraduates begin training in 3 Lagos Centres (Independent)

At least 5,000 final year students from eight tertiary institutions in Lagos have commenced training in three different centres for the third edition of the Ready.Set.Work, an Entrepreneurship and Employability Training programme of the State’s Ministry of Education. The training programme commenced at the weekend at the three designated centres including LASU, Ojo Campus; LASPOTECH, Ikorodu Campus and UNILAG, Akoka, with scores of professionals from different sectors of the economy, who have signed up as volunteers in the Ready.Set.Work Faculty which will run for 13 weeks. Child Kidnap: Lagos CP orders Churches, Mosques to be vigilant (Independent)

Following new antics of kidnappers who abduct children at religious places of worship in Lagos,  the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command,  Imohimi Edgal has called on  churches and mosques in the state to be vigilant and beef up security during and after  services. This development, he said, followed the recent  abductions of two children from the National headquarters of Christ Embassy Church at Oregun and  Latter Rain Assembly in Ogba respectively. The kidnappers, according to the police boss, had allegedly contacted the parents of the children requesting for ransom of various huge sums. Read more

Lagos appeals judgment on lotto operation (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has appealed against the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which in April this year restrained it from shutting down lotto companies who failed to obtain its licence. Justice Mohammed Idris gave the judgment in favour of Western Lotto Nigeria Limited and Wesco Pools & Lottery Limited, who prayed the court to determine “whether in view of subsisting and binding judgments of the court, the defendants can close down the plaintiffs’ businesses for not obtaining licences from the states despite having been granted nationwide permits/licences by the National Lottery Regulatory Commission.” Read more

The gridlock on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos and other adjoining areas has worsened. As at yesterday, it had attained phenomenal heights. The road, at the moment, is on lockdown. The situation is quite grim. Motorists, commuters, residents of the city and their businesses are suffering unspeakable harm. Everyone is in pain. On Sunday, the gridlock – which over the past months has been a dominant feature – attained such disturbing proportions as no one had ever thought about. In no time, queues of articulated trucks heading to the ports will be stretching nearly as far as Oshodi, about 20 kilometres to the Tin Can Island Port. Economist lists Lagos Business School among world’s best (DailyTrust)

The London-based Economist magazine has listed the Lagos Business School (LBS), Lekki, Lagos as one of the best global 50 institutions of higher learning offering Executive MBA programme in the world. In the Economist 2018 ranking released, the LBS Executive MBA programme ranks 48th out of a total of 65 schools featured and the only one from Africa to be listed among the top 50. The Magazine had considered two broad measures; personal development/educational experience and career development. At a news conference in Lagos, the Dean, LBS, Dr. Enase Okonedo described the feat as outstanding because according to him, the ranking is an indication that the corporate world recognises the value of an EMBA qualification from the School. Group hands over 30 rehabilitated, new water facilities to 2 Lagos LGAs (Independent)

Save The Children has handed over 30 rehabilitated and newly constructed water facilities to Somolu Local Government Area and Bariga Local Council Development Area of Lagos under its  Stop Diarrhoea Initiative (SDI). The SDI is a four-year project implemented by Save The Children in collaboration with the Lagos State Government. The project is aimed at reducing at least 50 per cent diarrhoea incidences  among under-five children in Somolu LGA and Bariga LCDA. The project seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the WHO/UNICEF recommended the 7-point plan for diarrhoea prevention among under five-year-old. Read more

Breweries partner FRSC to arrest drink-driving in Lagos, others (Punch)

Beer manufacturers have partnered the Federal Road Safety Commission to curb drink-driving in Lagos, Kaduna, Rivers and other parts of the country. The companies under the aegis of Beer Sectoral Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, in Abuja on Tuesday presented breathalyzers, blow tubes, reflective jackets and printing paper to the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, for enforcement activities. Speaking during the donation, Chairman, BSG team, Mr Jordi Bel, said the 16-member group planned to retrain about 120 FRSC personnel in Lagos, Kaduna and Rivers sector commands. Read more

Ibeju-Lekki community accuses Lagos of land grabbing (Punch)

The Abijo community in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State has cried out over an alleged forceful occupation of their land, Fidiso Estate, by the Lagos State Government. Members of the community said they gave up their farms to provide land for the estate, adding that they were surprised that the government, through Ibile Holdings Limited, Alpha Mead Development Company Limited and their subsidiaries, suddenly moved into the community and claimed the land. It was gathered that the community leaders took the case to court to stop the alleged illegal occupation. Read more

Lagos CP, Imohimi Edgal serves kidnappers, others quit notice (Vanguard)

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Imohimi Edgal, on Tuesday warned kidnappers and other criminals to leave the state or face the power of the force. Edgal gave the warning at the official commissioning of a police division at Ikosi – Ejirin village in Ikorodu, Lagos State. He said that the police was bringing the station to tighten the security around Ikosi- Ketu and its environs and to also tackle the security problem headlong. “We were able to upgrade the police post to a full police station because of the community police partnership with the residents of Ikosi Ketu. “I know that the residents would not partner with the police if we are not upright in our doings. Police raid hoodlums’ hideout in Ketu (Vanguard)

No fewer than 20 suspected hoodlums terrorising residents of Ketu, Mile 12. in Kosofe area of Lagos State had been arrested after a raid of the area by operatives of Ketu Police Division. The Spokesman for the Police in Lagos, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrests, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that the suspects would be charged to court. He said the suspects had been attacking residents of Ketu and snatching bags from people, particularly women at night and early morning. Read more

Suspected fake lawyer arrested in Lagos (Independent)

Police in Lagos have arrested a 27-year-old man, Destiny Otubanbo over alleged impersonation and theft. The suspect was arrested by the operatives attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) led Peter Gana, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP). He was alleged to have defrauded a number of victims and bought exotic cars, phones and other valuables with his false bank alerts. Lagos state police commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, while parading the suspect at the police command on Monday advised business men and women to be wary of fake bank statements. Read more

5 Lord’s Chosen members cheat death in auto crash (Vanguard)

Five members of the Lord’s Chosen Church from Benin, Edo State cheated death in Awka when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a gutter in Awka yesterday. The five persons came out unhurt in a motor accident involving a Mercedes 190 with registration number MUS984BX, on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway opposite Government House Awka. The accident which was said to be caused by  a faulty break system, occurred around  3:13pm, but none of the five occupants of the vehicle was injured. Officials of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC helped the victims out  of the vehicle which fell into a drainage channel by the roadside. Read more

6 Suspected Cultists arrested in Lagos Hotel (Independent)

The operatives of the Anti-Cultism of the Lagos State Police Command, led by  Akaninyene Etuk, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP) have arrested six suspected cultists in the state. The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 11th July 2018 in two separate operations. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Edgal Imohimi who disclosed the arrest during a press briefing at the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command, GRA, Ikeja said that to  sustain the onslaught against cultists in the State, “on 11th  July, 2018, a reliable information from member of the public led to the arrest of the following suspected cultists during the initiation of new members into Black Axe Confraternity popularly known as Aiye, at Malambo Hotel, Ilasamaja area of Lagos State.” Read more

Lagos SWAN praises Ambode for rescuing stranded Nigerians in Moscow (Independent)
